The livestock industry in Mongolia accounts for 24% of national revenue, with one third of the population maintaining a pastoral lifestyle. This close connection between Mongolian population and livestock is a major concern for pathogen transfer, especially given the increase in vector-borne diseases globally. This study examines blood samples from livestock to assess the prevalence of tick-borne bacterial infections across three provinces in Mongolia (Dornogovi, Selenge, Töv). Whole blood samples from 243 livestock (cattle=38, camel=11, goat=85, horse=22, sheep=87) were analyzed with 16S meta

BACKGROUND: Under the poor hygienic conditions, tick-borne pathogens cause severe economic losses to the cattle industry.
PURPOSE: The current study investigated the presence of Theileria annulata, Babesia bigemina, and Anaplasma marginale, the most relevant tick-borne pathogens in cattle, in 3 provinces of Egypt utilizing species-specific PCR assays.
METHODS: PCR was conducted, on bovine blood specimens, using primers targeting the T. annulata merozoite-piroplasm surface antigen (Tams1, 768 bp), A. marginale major surface protein-1b gene (msp1b, 265 bp), and B. bigemina small subunit riboso

BACKGROUND: Ixodes scapularis ticks can carry Borrelia species as well as other pathogens that cause human disease. The frequency of tick-borne infections and coinfections in children with suspected Lyme disease is unknown, creating clinical uncertainty about the optimal approach to diagnosis.
METHODS: We enrolled children aged 1-21 years presenting to 1 of 8 Pedi Lyme Net emergency departments for evaluation of Lyme disease. We selected cases with serologically or clinically diagnosed Lyme disease (erythema migrans or early neurologic disease) matched by symptoms, age, gender, and center to

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work is to provide the first report of a transfusion-acquired HIV-1 infection and to verify transmission from the donor to the recipients using phylogenetic analysis of HIV-1 DNA sequences in a Brazilian blood bank.
BACKGROUND: Although haemovigilance procedures based on phylogenetic analysis of HIV have been reported in several countries, this type of study has yet to be conducted in Latin America.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Upon identifying a HIV-1-positive repeat blood donor by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) blood screening, all recipients of the donor's previous donatio

The forest fly (Hippobosca equina) is an obligate haematophagous dipteran insect (order Diptera) that primarily infests horses and may contribute to the circulation of vector-borne pathogens. This study aimed to investigate the presence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., Babesia caballi, and Theileria equi, important vector-borne pathogens of equids, in forest flies collected from horses in endemic areas of Spain. A total of 170 forest flies were collected from 39 equids across four geographical regions in Spain (Segovia, Madrid, Toledo, and Menorca) and blood samples wer

For many decades, infectious disease was considered to be an unfortunate but unavoidable consequence of transfusion. However, since the early 1970s, the sequential introduction of numerous donor screening and testing methods along with continuous improvements has almost, but not completely, eliminated the risk of the classic transfusion-associated infections - syphilis, hepatitis and retroviruses - at least in the developed world. This has, at least in part, led to an increasing focus upon emerging infections: indeed, in the USA over the last few years, testing for West Nile virus (2003) and f

The transfusion transmission of hepatitis C and HIV to thousands of Canadian blood recipients was one of this country's largest public health catastrophes. In response to this crisis, and in an effort to prevent such a tragedy from occurring again, the Canadian blood system has undergone substantial reform. Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob (vCJD) disease was the first infectious threat faced by the blood system since undergoing reform. The response at the time to this risk provides insights into the Canadian blood system's new approach to infectious threats. Our analysis of the decision-making concer

The incidence of human tick-borne diseases is rising globally. Birds are ecologically significant hosts, capable of local or widespread dispersal for ticks and their associated pathogens, including agents of babesiosis. Despite its emerging importance, surveillance for zoonotic Babesia spp. ((Starcovici, 1893) Piroplasmida: Babesiidae) remains lacking, particularly in avian hosts. This study investigates the prevalence of Babesia spp. in a population of Carolina Wrens ((Latham, 1790) Passeriformes: Troglodytidae Thryothorus ludovicianus) in Missouri, USA. Due to their ground-foraging behavior

Human and animal pathogens that are transmitted by arthropods are a global concern, particularly those vectored by ticks (e.g. Borrelia burgdorferi and tick-borne encephalitis virus) and mosquitoes (e.g. malaria and dengue virus). Breaking the circulation of pathogens in permanent foci by controlling vectors using acaricide-based approaches is threatened by the selection of acaricide resistance in vector populations, poor management practices and relaxing of control measures. Alternative strategies that can reduce vector populations and/or vector-mediated transmission are encouraged worldwide.

Leukocytes contaminating donated blood are considered to be responsible for many of the side effects associated with blood transfusions. These include HLA sensitization and its sequelae, as also graft versus host reaction, transmission of CMV. The present article summarizes the indications for leukocyte depletion and its technical execution.

Babesiosis is an infectious disease with an empty drug pipeline. A search inside chemical libraries for novel potent antibabesial candidates may help fill such an empty drug pipeline. A total of 400 compounds (200 drug-like and 200 probe-like) from the Malaria Box were evaluated in the current study against the in vitro growth of Babesia divergens (B. divergens), a parasite of veterinary and zoonotic importance. Novel and more effective anti-B. divergens drugs than the traditionally used ones were identified. Seven compounds (four drug-like and three probe-like) revealed a highly inhibitory ef

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American health care workers suffer between 600,000 and 1 million needle sticks and other sharps injuries every year. Needle stick injuries are considered to be widely underreported. Eighty percent of blood contacts occur through needle sticks, making this the most common cause of health care work-related exposure to bloodborne pathogens. More than 20 pathogens can be transmitted through small amounts of blood. These include HIV, hepatitis B and C, other forms of hepatitis, syphilis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, varicellazoste

Outbreaks of suspected tick-borne disease (redwater fever) have been reported in captive deer of the Scottish Highlands. In this pilot study, polymerase chain reaction and amplicon sequencing were used to detect tick-borne pathogens in opportunistically collected blood and spleen samples from 63 (healthy, n = 44; diseased, n = 19) cervids, and 45 questing and feeding ticks (Ixodes ricinus) from the outbreak sites in 2021-2022. Potentially pathogenic Babesia species were detected in deer but not identified in ticks, Anaplasma phagocytophilum was detected in both deer and ticks, and Borrelia afz

Rickettsial pathogens are strictly dependent on the cellular biology of their hosts for survival and replication. Predominantly transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods, these vector-borne pathogens are forced to adapt between the disparate environments of their mammalian host and arthropod vector. To achieve this, the Rickettsial bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum undergo extensive transcriptional reprogramming, with over 41% of its genes differentially transcribed between mammals and Ixodes scapularis ticks. How the bacterium orchestrates this dramatic transcriptional reprogramming is not und
