Rumination regarding appearance is a major cause of body dissatisfaction among adolescents. Body image concerns in this age group may lead to considerable psychological distress. Studies suggest that adaptive emotion regulation strategies such as cognitive reappraisal and self-compassion can counteract the harmful consequences of rumination. The goal of the current study was to assess if and to what extent cognitive reappraisal and self-compassion can improve female adolescents' body satisfaction and appreciation after engaging in appearance-related rumination. Using an experimental design,

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The discrepancy between the current perceived body image (BI) and beauty ideals leads to dissatisfaction, which is believed to be common among adolescents. This study aimed to investigate the stability in BI perceptions and dissatisfaction during early adolescence. Another aim was to highlight differences in dissatisfaction according to Body Mass Index (BMI) and inconsistencies in weight status perception.
METHODS: Two hundred and nine participants (mean age at first survey: 11.33 ± 0.38 years) were enrolled in this longitudinal study with three years of follow-up. Data

BACKGROUND: Female undergraduates are at elevated risk for developing eating disorder symptoms. This cross-sectional study examined predictors of three disordered eating behaviors-uncontrolled eating, emotional eating, and cognitive restraint-among Chinese female undergraduates.
METHODS: A total of 1,727 participants (mean age = 19.73 ± 1.47 years) completed a web-based survey assessing demographics, sociocultural pressures, body dissatisfaction, fatness concern, body image flexibility, and disordered eating behaviors. Binary logistic regression was used to identify predictors.
RESULTS: Over

BACKGROUND: This study examined the changes in body image and weight in young women with an adolescent eating disorder, relative to women without an eating disorder (noED).
METHOD: Three diagnostic groups, anorexia nervosa (AN; n = 10), bulimia nervosa (BN; n = 27), and binge eating disorder (BED; n = 42) and three comparison groups (noED; n = 659 each) were compared on body mass index (BMI) and self-reported current body size, ideal body size, and weight dissatisfaction. Dependent variables were examined 2 and 1 year before the onset, the onset year, and 1 and 2 years after the onset of the

OBJECTIVE: Although body-image disturbance is among the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, the nature and extent of this disturbance have not been precisely identified. This is the purpose of this first meta-analysis of extant research on body image and eating disorders.
METHOD: Using contemporary techniques, the meta-analysis systematically examined 66 studies (from 1974 to 1993) of perceptual and attitudinal parameters of body image among anorexics and bulimics relative to control groups.
RESULTS: Attitudinal body dissatisfaction, both questionnaire and self-idea

This study has examined bio-socio-demographic and psychopathological factors probably associated with unhealthy eating patterns among university students and to estimate a multifactorial model following the associated factors by gender. Adjusted odds ratios were calculated to describe associations on basis of Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) stratified by gender in a representative sample of Spanish university students (n = 2551). The high EDI scorers for both sexes presented higher prevalence of dieting, body dissatisfaction, levels of psychopathology and lower self-esteem than the low EDI sco

The present study examined whether trait physical appearance perfectionism moderates young women's body image following upwards appearance comparison to idealized body images on social media, and whether cognitive coping mediates the relationship between physical appearance perfectionism and resulting body image from social comparison processes. Female undergraduate students (N = 142) were randomly assigned to either 1) compare the size of their body parts to the body parts of attractive Instagram models, or 2) an appearance-neutral control condition. All participants completed measures of tra

Disturbances in body perception are a consistent feature of Restrictive Eating Disorders (REDs). In adult patients diagnosed with REDs, body dissatisfaction and overestimation of body weight have been associated with altered tactile acuity and biases in proprioceptive localization. Whether similar alterations are present in adolescents-when the disorder often emerges-remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize possible alterations in tactile and body perception in adolescents diagnosed with REDs. Patients (N = 48) and age-matched healthy controls (HCs, N = 45) completed tasks measuring t

Body weight dissatisfaction has been associated with unfavorable eating behaviors such as eating disinhibition, more dieting, and poorer mental health. However, eating behavior and dietary correlates of weight satisfaction in adults is relatively understudied. This cross-sectional study investigated the associations of weight satisfaction with eating behavior dimensions (Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-65), psychological distress (General Health Questionnaire-12), self-reported weight loss history, recent weight changes, and dietary intake. Regression analysis was used to identify predictors

There has been particular confusion concerning two aspects of the psychopathology of bulimia nervosa: dissatisfaction with body shape and overvalued ideas about shape and weight. Whilst these features are closely related, they are nevertheless distinct. Body shape dissatisfaction is commonly found in these patients but is not necessarily present; whilst the over-valued ideas about shape and weight are a necessary diagnostic feature. Analysis of the relationship between these two features and depressed mood and self-esteem showed that, in the course of treatment, change in body shape dissatisfa

Obesity is a heterogeneous condition with multifactorial genesis (genetic predisposition, life-style, psychosocial situation), but there is a relatively homogeneous negative stereotype of obese individuals, because overweight and obesity are seen as self-inflicted disorders caused by physical inactivity and disorderd eating behavior. Obese individuals are confronted with far-reaching stigmatization and discrimination. Typical stereotypes are laziness, unattractiveness, work refusal. This negative image by the environment contributes to negative self-awareness and self-stigmatization, accompani

BACKGROUND: Although several cases of eating disorders in visually impaired women have been reported, there has been little research on the development of body image and disordered eating in the blind. Overall, it is argued that blind women are protected from developing body dissatisfaction because of having had little or no exposure to thin-ideal images, and that if they do develop an eating disorder, this would be linked to other risk factors. In the one reported case of bulimia nervosa in a blind woman, body image concerns were even absent.
METHOD: We report a single case of bulimia nervos

PURPOSE: This narrative review synthesizes the historical evolution and current evidence on the association between body image and depression, with emphasis on conceptual shifts, bidirectional pathways, heterogeneity across populations, and implications for prevention and treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: PubMed was searched using title-relevant body image terms (eg, body image, body dissatisfaction, body image disturbance) combined with depress* to capture depression-related variants. No date or language restrictions were applied. After screening, 266 records published from 1972 to 2026 were

BACKGROUND: To assess whether sexual distress among cervical cancer (CC) survivors is associated with frequently reported vaginal sexual symptoms, other proposed biopsychosocial factors and whether worries about painful intercourse mediate the relation between vaginal sexual symptoms and sexual distress.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 194 sexually active partnered CC survivors aged 25 to 69 years. Sexual distress, vaginal sexual symptoms, sexual pain worry, anxiety, depression, body image concerns, and relationship dissatisfaction and the sociodemographic variables age,

The present study aimed to clarify existing research that has inconsistently shown that weight suppression (differences between individuals' highest and current body weights) is associated with worse eating disorder (ED) behaviors and negative body image among women with lifetime EDs, by examining whether an understudied client-supported protective factor for ED pathology - self-acceptance - moderates these associations. Currently symptomatic women with lifetime EDs (N = 108) completed measures assessing self-acceptance and ED symptoms via an online survey. Moderated regressions examined wheth

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the relative importance of dissatisfaction, overvaluation, and preoccupation with body weight and shape in predicting increases in disordered eating behaviors and depressive symptoms from adolescence through to early adulthood.
METHOD: The study involved 1,830 participants (60% female) who completed the Project EAT survey during adolescence (mean age = 14.90 years, SD = 1.65 years) and again, 15 years later, in early adulthood. Participants provided assessments of dissatisfaction, overvaluation and preoccupation with weight and shape, as well as

OBJECTIVE: To examine a new socio-family risk model of Eating Disorders (EDs) using path-analyses.
METHOD: The sample comprised 1264 (ED patients = 653; Healthy Controls = 611) participants, recruited into a multicentre European project. Socio-family factors assessed included: perceived maternal and parental parenting styles, family, peer and media influences, and body dissatisfaction. Two types of path-analyses were run to assess the socio-family model: 1.) a multinomial logistic path-model including ED sub-types [Anorexia Nervosa-Restrictive (AN-R), AN-Binge-Purging (AN-BP), Bulimia Nervosa

BACKGROUND: Body image disturbance and anxiety are core features of anorexia nervosa (AN), a psychiatric disorder with one of the highest mortality rates. This study examined the efficacy of a novel non-pharmacological treatment, floatation-REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy) on body image disturbance and anxiety in inpatients with AN.
METHODS: This parallel group randomised controlled trial compared floatation-REST vs. care as usual in women and girls hospitalised for treatment of AN in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. Participants were randomised on a 2:1 ratio to receive eight, twice-wee

Despite the known benefits of PA, many women do not engage in sufficient PA. This study explored postpartum women's perceptions of their body and PA and evaluated whether "realistic" PA imagery may influence perspectives around PA. We created imagery portraying safe, appropriate postpartum exercises and conducted an explanatory sequential mixed methods study. Given the influence of postpartum weight retention on body dissatisfaction we further explored experiences based on postpartum weight retention. Participants (n = 33, M = 31 years) <12 months postpartum completed a questionnaire, and n =

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study is to see if the changes in the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) experienced by restrictive anorexia nervosa (AR) and bulimia nervosa (BN) patients, following the exposure to their own body image, persist at follow-up.
METHODS: Three single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) were performed on nine patients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of AR, 13 with BP, and 12 controls: at rest, following a neutral stimulus, and after exposure to their previously filmed whole body image. Body dissatisfaction was measured by means of the Body Dissatisfaction Quest
