Association between prepregnancy body mass index and congenital heart defects.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine associations between prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and congenital heart defects (CHDs). STUDY DESIGN: These analyses included case infants with CHDs (n = 6440) and liveborn control infants without birth defects (n = 5673) enrolled in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (1997-2004). RESULTS: Adjusted odds ratios for all CHDs combined were 1.16 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-1.29), 1.15 (95% CI, 1.00-1.32), and 1.31 (95% CI, 1.11-1.56) for overweight status, moderate obesity, and severe obesity, respectively. Phenotypes asso…

Body mass index and episodic headaches: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the influence of the body mass index (BMI [calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared]) on the frequency, severity, and patterns of treatment of migraine, probable migraine (PM), and severe episodic tension-type headache (S-ETTH). METHODS: A validated questionnaire was mailed to 120 000 households selected to be representative of the US population. The participants were divided into 5 categories based on BMI: underweight (<18.5), normal weight (18.5-24.9), overweight (25.0-29.9), obese (30.0-34.9), and morbidly obese (>35.0). Analyses wer…

Body mass index and lower urinary tract symptoms in women.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of obesity has been rising sharply in industrialised countries over the past decade. As the Body Mass Index (BMI) is recognized as an accurate and objective measurement of individual body mass, this study investigated whether BMI is associated with lower urinary tract symptoms in women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study analysed a database of 750 female patients who were referred to the Uro-Gynaecology Unit from 2002 to 2004 because of urinary and sexual disturbances. Patients were divided into four classes (I, II, III, IV). Each class was analysed a…

Association among bad breath, body mass index, and alcohol intake.

Bad breath is a common condition, difficult to assess in the general population. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that a self- … iated with odor judge scores (p < 0.05, unpaired t test), including questions on alcohol intake and body mass index (BMI). Predictions of odor judge scores based on these 9 questions (linear multiple regression analysis) yielded R = 0.601; when introduced together with Halimeter and beta-galactosidase scores, the correlation rose to R = 0.843. The results suggest …

Time spent outdoors at midday and children's body mass index.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether the Kidskin sun protection intervention increased children's body mass index by reducing the time spent outdoors at midday. METHODS: The Kidskin sun protection intervention involved 1614 Australian school children assigned to 1 of 3 groups: a control group, a moderate-intervention group, or a high-intervention group. Schools in the control group received the standard health curriculum and schools in the intervention groups received a multicomponent intervention. Outcomes included time spent outdoors and nevus development (a marker of melanoma risk). Height …

Relationship between physical activity and body mass index in adolescents.

PURPOSE: To examine the associations between physical activity and body mass index (BMI) among females aged 14 to 17 yr. METHODS: A convenience sample of 65 Mexican American, 58 African American, and 49 non-Hispanic white girls in an urban high school in Texas participated in this study. Physical activity was assessed by ankle actigraphy. Average activity per period (before, during and after school) of the day and total activity were derived by a software program as movements per minute. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention 2000 BMI charts were used to calculate overweight status. Pe…

Relationship between Body Mass Index and slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is the most common hip disorder of adolescents and is known to be strongly associated with obesity. The use of Body Mass Index (BMI) as an assessment of obesity has been shown to be a very efficient technique. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention has recently developed BMI-for-age percentile growth charts that have been shown to effectively evaluate obesity in the pediatric population. In the current study, the investigators provide a retrospective review, looking at the association between SCFE and obesity based on BMI. One hundred six subjects…

The relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea and body mass index.

Obese patients have a high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), but a low response rate and high frequency of relapse after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UVPP). In this study we have determined the level of obstruction during sleep in 31 men with OSA, using a catheter with multiple micropressure transducers and a portable digital recorder. The proportion of apnoeic episodes with obstruction at lower levels correlated with increasing body mass index (BMI) (P < 0.05). Thus, with increasing obesity, there seems to be a shift to a lower level of obstruction. All patients with BMI > 30 and ap…

Appendicular Muscle Mass Index was Stronger than Body Mass Index in Association with Atherosclerosis in the Community-Dwelling Elderly.

AIMS: Low muscle mass is associated with advanced atherosclerosis. However, only very few studies on the elderly have investigated a dose-response relationship between muscle mass and atherosclerosis. Furthermore, whether the relationship between muscle mass and atherosclerosis is stronger than that between body mass index (BMI) and atherosclerosis among the elderly population remains to be determined. METHODS: A community-based sample of apparently healthy elderlies (≥ 65 years) was cross-sectionally examined for the association between appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) and brachial-an…

Prior loss of body mass index, low body mass index, and central obesity independently contribute to higher rates of fractures in elderly women and men.

We aimed to comprehensively evaluate the association of body composition with fracture risk using longitudinal data from a Swedish cohort of 44,366 women and men (mean age of 70 years) and a subcohort of 5022 women. We estimated hazard ratios (HRs) of fracture for baseline body mass index (BMI), BMI change during the prior 12 and 18 years, baseline waist-to-height ratio, total and regional distribution of fat and lean mass, with and without areal bone mineral density (BMD) adjustment. During follow-up (median 8.7 years), 7290 individuals sustained a fracture, including 4279 fragility fractures…

Association of Body Mass Index of HIV-1-Infected Pregnant Women and Infant Weight, Body Mass Index, Length, and Head Circumference: The NISDI Perinatal Study.

This study assessed the relationship between the body mass index (BMI) of HIV-1-infected women and their infants' perinatal outcomes. The study population consisted of women enrolled in the NICHD International Site Development Initiative (NISDI) Perinatal Study with data allowing calculation of the BMI adjusted for length of gestation (adjBMI), who delivered singleton infants. Outcome variables included infant growth parameters at birth (weight, BMI, length and head circumference) and gestational age. Of 697 women from Argentina, the Bahamas, Brazil and Mexico who were included in the analysis…

Body weight divided by squared knee height as an alternative to body mass index.

Weight/height(2) (Quetelet's index) is the basis for defining both underweight and obesity. Height, however, is often not precisely measurable in the elderly due to involutional changes such as spinal deformity. Body volume or body surface area are not proportionately decreased even with height loss. Previous reports have shown that Quetelet's index is overestimated in the elderly with height loss. Then we have made a hypothesis described below. Maximal height or height at youth would better represent the subjects' nutritional or clinical status. The distinction of these two heights has not be

Associations between social media use, body mass index, and body image among pregnant women.

BACKROUND: Body image during pregnancy is an important psychosocial factor that influences maternal well-being. Emerging evidence suggests that both social media exposure and body mass index (BMI) may shape body image perceptions during this period. This study examined the associations between social media use, BMI, and body image in pregnant women. METHODS: This cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study was conducted with 272 pregnant women recruited through convenience sampling from the gynecology and obstetrics outpatient clinics of a state hospital in the Mediterranean region o…

High Body Mass Index Masks Body Composition Differences in Physically Active Versus Sedentary Participants.

BACKGROUND: Despite the benefits of aerobic exercise on body composition, runners with high body mass index (BMI) remain understudied. We examined body composition differences between sedentary insulin-resistant [obese insulin-resistant sedentary (OS-IR)], sedentary insulin-sensitive [obese insulin-sensitive sedentary (OS-IS)], and trained [obese trained (OT)] individuals with high BMI (≥25 kg/m2). We hypothesized that after matching for high BMI, OT individuals would have less fat mass (absolute and relative) and greater lean mass than OS-IR or OS-IS individuals. METHODS: This is a retrospec…
