Changes in body weight and composition, metabolic parameters, and quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes treated with subcutaneous semaglutide in real-world clinical practice.

Subcutaneous once-weekly (ow) semaglutide is a recent treatment option for type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity, but real-world data on weight loss and associated changes in body composition, nutrients intake, and quality of life are still scarce. This observational, prospective clinical study involved all T2D patients starting ow semaglutide according to routine care between December 2021 and February 2022. Clinical information was collected after 6 months (T6) and 12 months (T12) from semaglutide initiation (T0). Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) was performed to measure changes in body co

Ferulic acid lowers body weight and visceral fat accumulation via modulation of enzymatic, hormonal and inflammatory changes in a mouse model of high-fat diet-induced obesity.

Previous studies have reported on the glucose and lipid-lowering effects of ferulic acid (FA) but its anti-obesity potential has not yet been firmly established. This study investigated the possible anti-obesitogenic effects of FA in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 15 weeks. To assess the antiobesity potential of FA, 32 male Swiss mice, weighing 20-25 g (n=6-8 per group) were fed a normal diet (ND) or HFD, treated orally or not with either FA (10 mg/kg) or sibutramine (10 mg/kg) for 15 weeks and at the end of this period, the body weights of animals, visceral fat accumulation, plasma levels

Body mass index, weight change, and risk of second primary breast cancer in the WECARE study: influence of estrogen receptor status of the first breast cancer.

Studies examining the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and risk of contralateral breast cancer (CBC) have reported mixed findings. We previously showed that obese postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor (ER)-negative breast cancer have a fivefold higher risk of CBC compared with normal weight women. In the current analysis, we reexamined this relationship in the expanded Women's Environmental Cancer and Radiation Epidemiology (WECARE) Study, focusing on the impact of menopausal status and ER status of the first breast cancer. The WECARE Study is a population-based case-control st

Changes in Body Weight From Young Adulthood to Middle Age and Its Association With Blood Pressure and Hypertension: A Cross-Sectional Study in Hong Kong Chinese Women.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the associations of weight changes from young adulthood to middle age with blood pressure (BP) and hypertension among Hong Kong Chinese women. METHODS AND RESULTS: Weight at age 18 (W18), current weight (Wcurrent), height, BP, demographics, and lifestyle factors were obtained from 1253 female nurses (35-65 years) by a self-administered questionnaire through mail survey in Hong Kong. The conditional relative weight (CRW; a residual of Wcurrent regressed on W18) was used to express the relative weight change from age 18 to current age. The study results sho

Body size and weight change over adulthood and risk of breast cancer by menopausal and hormone receptor status: a pooled analysis of 20 prospective cohort studies.

Associations between anthropometric factors and breast cancer (BC) risk have varied inconsistently by estrogen and/or progesterone receptor (ER/PR) status. Associations between prediagnostic anthropometric factors and risk of premenopausal and postmenopausal BC overall and ER/PR status subtypes were investigated in a pooled analysis of 20 prospective cohorts, including 36,297 BC cases among 1,061,915 women, using multivariable Cox regression analyses, controlling for reproductive factors, diet and other risk factors. We estimated dose-response relationships and tested for nonlinear association

Pre-diagnostic body mass index and weight change in relation to colorectal cancer survival among incident cases from a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Whether excess body weight influences colorectal cancer (CRC) survival is unclear. We studied pre-diagnostic body mass index (BMI) and weight change in relation to CRC-specific mortality among incident CRC cases within a large, Norwegian cohort. METHODS: Participants' weight was measured at health examinations up to three times between 1974 and 1988. CRC cases were identified through linkage with the Norwegian Cancer Registry. In total, 1336 men and 1180 women with a weight measurement >3 years prior to diagnosis were included in analyses. Hazard ratios (HRs) and confidence interv

Macronutrient composition and its effect on body composition changes during weight loss therapy in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: Secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Dietary composition may affect body composition during weight loss therapy. We tested the hypothesis of whether dietary macronutrient composition influences the reduction of total abdominal adipose tissue, subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), or visceral adipose tissue (VAT) during weight loss. METHODS: Dietary macronutrient composition and body composition were analyzed as a secondary outcome of a randomized controlled trial of 62 participants with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Patients were randomly assigned to a calorie-restricted intermittent fasting (5:2), calorie-restrict

The Impact of Body Weight Change on Liver Histology in Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease Across Various Histological Endpoints: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Weight loss is the cornerstone of treatment for metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease (MASLD); however, its impact on liver histology across patient subgroups remains incompletely characterized. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to quantify the effects of body weight change across multiple histological endpoints in patients with biopsy-proven MASLD. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE (Ovid), and Google Scholar were searched from inception for trials reporting percentage change in body weight in MASLD or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH)

HDL cholesterol efflux capacity and cholesteryl ester transfer are associated with body mass, but are not changed by diet-induced weight loss: A randomized trial in abdominally obese men.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obesity is associated with a lower HDL-mediated cholesterol efflux from macrophages and a higher CETP (cholesteryl ester transfer protein) activity, but effects of weight loss are not clear. In addition, associations with visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue are not known. We therefore investigated effects of diet-induced weight loss on HDL-mediated cholesterol efflux and cholesterol ester (CE) transfer in abdominally obese men. Differences between normal-weight and abdominally obese men were also examined. METHODS: Twenty-five apparently healthy, normal-weight men (w

Liquid fructose in Western-diet-fed mice impairs liver insulin signaling and causes cholesterol and triglyceride loading without changing calorie intake and body weight.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Liquid fructose associates with prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. Intervention studies suggest that metabolically unfit individuals are more responsive than healthy individuals to liquid fructose. We determined whether mice consuming an obesogenic Western diet were more responsive than chow-fed mice to the alterations induced by liquid fructose supplementation (LFS). METHODS: C57BL/6N mice were fed chow or Western diet±ad libitum 15% fructose solution for 12 weeks. Food and liquid intake and body weight were monitored. Plasma analytes and liver lipids,

Long-term differential modulation of genes encoding orexigenic and anorexigenic peptides by leptin delivered by rAAV vector in ob/ob mice. Relationship with body weight change.

We investigated the long-term effects of physiological levels of leptin produced by gene therapy on body weight (BW) and expression of genes that encode orexigenic and anorexigenic peptides in the hypothalamus. Recombinant adeno-associated viral vector (rAAV), a non-pathogenic and non-immunogenic vector, encoding leptin (betaOb) was generated and administered iv to ob/ob mice lacking endogenous leptin. Whereas the lowest dose of rAAV-betaOb (6x10(9) particles) was ineffective, the middle dose (6x10(10) particles) curbed BW gain without affecting food consumption for 75 days of observation. A t

Prognostic relevance of short-term changes in body weight, renal indices, and echocardiographic variables after intravenous diuretic therapy in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease hospitalized for pulmonary edema.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) secondary to myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is managed with diuretics, yet the prognostic value of short-term hemodynamic responses remains unclear. This retrospective study evaluated 50 dogs with ACVIM stage C or D MMVD hospitalized for CHF. We assessed changes in body weight, echocardiographic parameters, and renal values before and after intravenous (IV) diuretic therapy to determine their association with survival. IV diuretic therapy led to significant reductions in body weight and echocardiographic indices, including the left atrium-to-aortic root r

Quality Plus Quantity: Evaluation of a Virtual GLP-1 Programme With Physical Activity Support to Promote Healthy Body Composition Change During GLP-1 Weight Loss.

AIMS: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists can produce rapid weight loss, but this loss is frequently accompanied by disproportionate loss of lean mass, particularly during the early phase of GLP-1-treatment. Physical activity (PA), particularly resistance training, is the most effective behavioural strategy for enhancing fat reduction while preserving lean mass. Our primary aim was to evaluate whether a 12-week virtual GLP-1 lifestyle companion programme that includes PA coaching was associated with increased weight and fat loss coupled with preservation of muscle mass among adul
