BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The role of intracranial hemodynamics in the pathophysiology and risk stratification of brain AVMs remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of Spetzler-Martin grade, clinical history, and risk factors on vascular flow and tissue perfusion in cerebral AVMs.

A case of systemic mycosis due to a Rhizopus sp. infection is described in a dead-stranded, 10-yr-old, male harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) found on the beach of Neustadt, Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic Sea (Germany). At necropsy, granulomatous mycotic lesions in brain, lung, kidneys, testis, and draining lymph nodes were found. In addition, a focal ulcerative gastritis of the first stomach, due to a nematode infection, was present and is suspected to be the portal of entry for the fungus.

Two cases of retention of wooden foreign bodies in the orbit are presented. Both patients had a draining fistula. A brain abscess developed in one and a foreign body granuloma in the other. In both cases computerized tomography was very helpful in localizing the foreign bodies and the sequelae. In such cases a subperiosteal surgical approach provides good exposure and minimizes the damage to the orbital contents. A high degree of suspicion of penetration of the orbit is essential in tree branch injuries of the eyelids.

Concentration of erythrocytes (hematocrit) was assessed in blood samples taken from small veins of the brain and the hindlimbs of rabbits. Two patients with arteriovenous malformations draining into the deep venous system of the brain are presented. Both were diagnosed in infancy. One of the patients required a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt to control his obstructive hydrocephalus. Six months later, the AVM was surgically attacked in an attempt to control the progressive heart failure. The other, treated without a shunt, required digitalis to control the progressive heart failure. The clinical presentation and the characteristics of arteriovenous malformations of the vein of Galen and treatment are discussed.
