Solitary Bone Cyst Like Areas in Myositis Ossificans: A Breast Mass in a Child.

Myositis ossificans is an extraosseous, benign tumor-like condition characterized by prominent heterotopic ossification. Cystic degeneration in myositis ossificans is an uncommon entity. Case report: A 13-year-old girl presented with a large and painful breast lump. Physical examination revealed a mobile, hard mass, clinically resembling a fibroadenoma. The mass was excised and diagnosed as myositis ossificans with central bone cyst like changes. Conclusion: Our case represents the first myositis ossificans case with central bone cyst like changes in a child.

Human gross cyst breast disease and cystic fluid: bio-molecular, morphological, and clinical studies.

For more than one and a half century the cystic disease of the breast has been recognized as the most frequent female benign breast lesion. Although some conundrums and controversies exist about the relation between gross cysts and breast cancer, recent evidence suggests that the multidisciplinary study of gross cystic breast disease (GCBD) may be a powerful tool for predicting the natural history of the multifaceted gross cyst pathology. A lot of papers have been published on breast cyst fluids (BCF) concerning biochemical, hormonal and morphological aspects, demonstrating that the intracysti…

Ferritin and transferrin levels in human breast cyst fluids: relationship with intracystic electrolyte concentrations.

The concentrations of sodium and potassium and the content of ferritin and transferrin, proteins considered as potential markers for identifying cells undergoing divisional activity, were measured in fluid from 30 human breast cysts. On the basis of the relative electrolyte concentrations, two main classes of cysts were defined. When the cyst fluids were subdivided according to their Na+/K+ ratio, a significant difference was found between menstruating vs. menopausal patients. The relationship between the two major iron-binding proteins and the Na+/K+ ratio may indicate the expression of a loc…

Relationship between epidermal growth factor and dehydroepiandrosterone and its sulphate in breast cyst fluid.

Gross cystic breast disease is a common condition. Women with apocrine breast cysts may be at higher risk of breast cancer than women with cysts which are lined by flattened epithelium. Apocrine cysts have been shown to be associated with higher intracystic levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate and intracystic sodium to potassium ratios of less than 3. In this study we measured the concentrations of epidermal growth factor, dehydroepiandrosterone and its sulphate in breast cyst fluid. The concentrations of all three analytes were significantly higher in cysts with intracystic Na+/K+ ratios…

Alpha 1-antitrypsin, transferrin, alkaline phosphatase, phosphohexoseisomerase and gamma-glutamyltransferase in breast cyst fluid.

The levels of alpha 1-antitrypsin, transferrin, alkaline phosphatase, phosphohexoseisomerase and gamma-glutamyltransferase were measured in 32 samples of breast cyst fluid, and a wide range of values was obtained. The levels observed in some samples for these parameters, being similar to those of normal serum, might suggest a mechanism of plasma exudation for the formation of breast cyst fluid. Nevertheless, a comparison with the maximum normal serum reference value revealed very high levels of gamma-glutamyltransferase in all of the samples; about 50% also exhibited high levels of phosphohexo…

From mammary mystery to parasitic surprise: a rare case of primary breast hydatid cyst.

BACKGROUND: Primary breast hydatid cyst is an exceedingly rare manifestation of echinococcosis, with an incidence of less than 0.27% among all hydatid cyst cases. CASE REPORT: This report presents a unique case of a 51-year-old multiparous female who initially presented with a painless left breast mass. Initial imaging studies, including ultrasonography and mammography, revealed a 4.5 × 4 cm cyst classified as BI-RADS 3. The cyst was initially managed with fine-needle aspiration and conservative treatment. However, it recurred twice over a six-month period, necessitating surgical excision. Pr

Breast hydatid cyst presented as a fluctuant painless lump mimicking galactocele: A case report.

Hydatid disease is a zoonosis caused by the Echinococcus species. The liver and lungs are where it generally seen, with breast involvement being extremely uncommon. This is a case of a woman aged 28 years who presented with a progressive painless swelling on the left breast, which was fluctuant and nontender, detected on the upper outer quadrant. The cytologic evaluation yielded a crystal-clear fluidal aspirate composed of a few laminated metachromatic materials and the mass sonographically appeared as an anechoic cystic mass having a double-layered wall with posterior acoustic enhancement. A

Imaging findings in a case of epidermal inclusion cyst arising within the breast parenchyma.

Epidermal inclusion cysts rarely occur in the breast, but when they do, the consequences can be severe. Here, we report the case of a 23-year-old woman who presented with a palpable mass in the right breast. The mass had persisted for 4 years and had been causing pain for 1 month at the time of the patient's presentation. We examined the mass by means of mammography and sonography. Sonographic examination revealed a well-circumscribed solid, avascular mass suggestive of an epidermal inclusion cyst. Excision was performed at the patient's request. Histopathologic examination of the mass after e

Immunoglobulin levels in breast cyst fluid: apparent connection with intracystic transcortin (CBG) binding activity.

Immunoglobulin levels of the major classes of IgG, IgA and IgM have been measured by radial immunodiffusion in 74 samples of breast cyst fluid (BCF) aspirated by women with "Gross Cystic Disease". Appreciable levels of Ig were found in all samples. No significant correlation was observed between intra-cystic Ig levels and the corresponding levels measured on coincidental blood specimens. A significant linear correlation was found between intra-cystic Ig levels and the apparent specific binding activity for cortisol attributable to a transcortin like component (n = 30; p less than 0.05 for IgA,…

Inhibition of oestrone sulphatase activity in the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line by breast cyst fluid from Malaysian women.

Oestrone sulphate is a major source of active oestrogens in the breast. It is converted to oestrone by oestrone sulphatase. Breast cyst fluid (BCF) is a rich source of sex hormones and growth factors. BCF obtained from British women has been shown to inhibit oestrone sulphatase activity in the MCF-7 oestrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer cell line. The aim of the present study was to assess whether BCF obtained from Malaysian women inhibited oestrone sulphatase activity in the MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines. The cell lines were grown in supplemented Dulbecco's Modified Eagle …

Circulating levels and breast cyst fluid concentrations of human chorionic gonadotropin, progesterone and testosterone in women with gross cystic breast disease.

Circulating levels and cyst fluid concentrations of human chorionic gonadotropin, progesterone and testosterone were measured in 30 premenopausal women with gross cystic breast disease. Specific radioimmunoassay procedures were used. Amounts of human chorionic gonadotropin exceeding 5.0 mIU/ml were found in cyst fluid of many patients, but not in serum. Progesterone and testosterone concentrations in breast cyst fluid were significantly higher than in serum (p less than 0.01 and p less than 0.001, respectively).

Cations and dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate in cyst fluid of pre- and menopausal patients with gross cystic disease of the breast. Evidence for the existence of subpopulations of cysts.

Cations (K+ and Na+) content was evaluated in 444 breast cyst fluid (BCF) specimens, aspirated from 391 patients with gross cystic disease of the breast (GCD), a benign form admittedly at major risk of cancer. In 306/444 BCF, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHA-S) content was also evaluated. A positive correlation (P less than 0.001) was observed between log K+ vs. log DHA-S whereas a negative correlation was found between log Na+ and log DHA-S (P less than 0.001). Cysts were subdivided in three types according to their cationic concentration: most were of type I (K+/Na+ greater than 1.5) and …

Visualization of the shear wave on gray-scale ultrasound: experience with a complex breast cyst.

Shear wave elastography (SWE) is the newer of the two methods of measuring tissue stiffness using ultrasound. We present the case of a 39-year-old patient with fibrocystic breast disease who presented with a left painful breast lump. The patient underwent a breast ultrasound that depicted a complicated cyst with a "pseudo-solid" content. When the SWE mode was turned on, the ultrasound share wave was observed on the gray-scale image, as surface undulations of the "pseudo-solid" component. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the share wave visualization on a gray-scale imag

Invasive papillary carcinoma of the breast presenting as post-traumatic recurrent hemorrhagic cysts.

We report the sonographic features of an intracystic papillary carcinoma of the breast presenting as recurrent hemorrhagic cysts following trauma. A 56-year-old woman presented with palpable breast masses after a traumatic event; sonography showed multiple, well-defined, hemorrhagic cysts. Hemorrhagic fluid was evacuated by fine needle aspiration with no residual lesions. Cytology was negative for malignancy. Five months later, the mass reappeared; sonography demonstrated multiple cysts with solid nodules. US-guided core biopsy and surgery revealed invasive papillary carcinoma. We suggest clos
