Myeloid sarcoma of the breast: a pathology that should not be forgotten.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare neoplasm, represented by a tumoural mass composed of myeloid blasts, occurring at any anatomical site other than the bone marrow. MS is considered the tissue-based equivalent of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), requiring the same therapeutic specification, independently from the association with previous or coexisting myeloid neoplasms. Isolated breast involvement by MS is exceedingly rare, with only exceptional cases reported in the literature. This work aims to provide a pictorial essay of the main features of breast involvement by MS. Even though it is a rare co

Solitary pancreatic metastasis from breast cancer: case report and review of literature.

CONTEXT: Pancreatic metastases from primary malignant tumors at other sites are rare, constituting about 2% of the neoplasms that affect the pancreas. Pancreatic metastasis from breast cancer is extremely rare and difficult to diagnose, because its clinical and radiological presentation is similar to that of a primary pancreatic tumor. CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old female developed a lesion in the pancreatic tail 24 months after neoadjuvant therapy, surgery and adjuvant radiation therapy for right-side breast cancer (ductal carcinoma). She underwent distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy and lef

Metastases to the breast: role of fine needle cytology samples. Our experience with nine cases in 2 years.

BACKGROUND: The increased survival due to the introduction of effective antineoplastic regimens has caused a modification of the natural history of numerous malignancies. Follow-up of neoplastic patients often includes the evaluation of masses in various body sites by fine needle cytology (FNC) in order to rule out cancer recurrence. Besides primary neoplasms, the breast can host a number of metastases: these rarely do have a typical presentation, so FNC is requested for their cytomorphological assessment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This report describes nine consecutive cases in which a cytopatho

[Breast conserving oncoplastic surgery in the treatment of centrally located malignant breast tumors].

Central breast neoplasms account for 5 to 20% of breast cancer cases. For decades, they have been traditionally treated with mastectomy. The high incidence of involvement associated with these tumors necessitates nipple and areola resection. Oncoplastic surgical techniques, in well selected cases, enable the achievement of adequate cosmetic results following a radical central quadrantectomy along with the Nipple-Areola Complex. The present paper summarizes the indications, techniques and results of breast conserving surgeries of central breast tumors.

Lymphoma of the breast.

Three cases of malignant lymphoma of the breast are described, seen over a 14 year period in the district of Kuopio University Central Hospital. The neoplasms were either of high or intermediate grade of malignancy: one immunoblastic, one Burkitt-type, and one centroblastic-centrocytic malignant lymphoma. The patient with centroblastic-centrocytic malignant lymphoma had advanced disease with pulmonary and adenoidal involvement and died 15 months after the detection of the breast tumor. The two other neoplasms were confined to the breast with no evidence of further dissemination. The patient wi

An unusual presentation of chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma on mammography: Case report.

Although rare, breast CLL/SLL should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a breast mass. A high index of suspicion is needed to differentiate this neoplasm from more common breast carcinomas like solid variant of invasive lobular carcinoma.

Secondary Neoplasms in Children with Hodgkin's Lymphoma Receiving C-MOPP and Radiotherapy: Presentation of Four Cases.

Patients who survive Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) are at increased risk of secondary neoplasms (SNs). A wide variety of SNs have been reported, including leukemias, non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, and solid tumors, specifically breast and thyroid cancers. Herein we report subsequent neoplasms in four patients with HL receiving chemoradiotherapy. It is interesting that three SNs, fibrosarcoma, thyroid carcinoma, and retrobulbar meningioma, were observed in the radiation area in one of our patients. A hypopharyngeal epithelioid malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor as an unusual secondary malignant neoplasm

Fine-needle aspiration findings of fibroadenoma with pseudolactational changes in the vulva: A case report.

Fibroadenoma is a common benign neoplasm of the breast and ectopic breast tissue, associated with possible lactational changes in pregnant or lactating women. Uncommon pseudolactational changes are possible in this neoplasm among nulliparous women. Fibroadenoma and lactating adenoma are rarely seen in the vulvar region. Theoretically, pseudolactational changes can occur in fibroadenomas of the vulva in young nulliparous women although there have been no reports so far. In this case report, we describe the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology of a vulvar fibroadenoma with pseudolactational cha

Papillary carcinoma of the male breast: report of a case.

Intracystic papillary carcinoma of the male breast represents an extremely rare entity that accounts for less than 1% of all malignancies, and histologically may range from papillary hyperplasia in gynecomastia to invasive papillary carcinoma. This report presents the case of a 61-year-old Caucasian man who presented with a 5-year history of a centrally located painless swelling of his right breast with occasional nipple discharge. Triple assessment was very helpful in establishing the diagnosis. Treatment included a mastectomy and hormonal therapy because the neoplasm expressed hormone recept

Fine needle aspiration of pancreatic lesions focusing on secondary tumors with emphasis of metastatic breast cancer: A clinicopathological study with follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The data on metastatic tumors to the pancreas diagnosed by fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy is limited. We report our experience of FNA of primary and secondary pancreatic tumors emphasizing metastatic breast cancer in the pancreas. METHOD: Total 274 cases of pancreatic FNA in 10 years were retrospectively reviewed. Literature review of metastatic breast cancers to the pancreas was performed. RESULTS: Out of the 274 cases, 7 (7/274, 2.6%) cases were non-diagnostic, 46 (46/274, 16.8%) cases were negative for malignancy, and 40 (40/274, 14.6%) cases were under the category of at

Metastatic thymoma of the breast.

Breast metastasis from nonmammary malignant neoplasms is uncommon, and it accounts for approximately 2% of all breast tumors. Distant metastasis of thymoma is very rare, and especially to extrathorcic areas. We report a female who had a metastatic thymoma in her breast 20 years after undergoing resection for a non-invasive thymoma. She presented with a palpable mass in her left breast. Mammography and ultrasonogram showed a lobular mass at the anterior glandular portion. Histological examination after surgical excision revealed a metastatic thymoma.

Breast disorders in nursing mothers.

Family physicians should be familiar with the details of breast feeding and with the breast disorders that may occur during lactation. Such disorders range from relatively minor problems, such as sore nipples, milk stasis and mastitis, to more serious conditions, such as abscesses and neoplasms. Inflammatory changes are easily treated with frequent breast emptying; infectious processes require antibiotics. Surgical intervention may be needed for some conditions. Pregnancy or lactation should not delay or alter the diagnosis and treatment of suspected breast carcinoma.

Plasmacytoma of the breast. A report of two cases diagnosed by aspiration biopsy.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the breast is an uncommon neoplasm, occurring either as a solitary tumor or as evidence of disseminated multiple myeloma. CASE: Two cases of plasmacytoma of the breast were diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology. Aspiration smears showed a dispersed population of plasmacytoid cells with eccentric nuclei, abundant cytoplasm and the characteristic paranuclear hof. CONCLUSION: The clinical, cytologic and immunophenotypic features of plasmacytoma are characteristic, and the importance of distinguishing these neoplasms from primary mammary tumors i

Neoplasms during the progression of pregnancy.

Restricting this review to dealing with pregnancy and its interaction with neoplasms limits us to the child-bearing years. Neoplasms may appear at all stages of species with true tissues and the incidence of malignancy in pregnancy is estimated to be 1:1,000. Almost 50% of these tumors are cervical cancers, followed by breast cancer, with an incidence of approximately 0.03%. The pregnant woman, in the same person, exhibits controlled growth (the pregnancy) and uncontrolled growth (the malignancy). In younger women, the neoplasms represent early stages of biological development and seem to aris

Primary "breast-like" cancer of the vulva: a case report and critical review of the literature.

Ectopic mammary gland tissue in the vulva is an uncommon clinical or pathologic finding. Such ectopic tissue can be the site of the same physiologic and pathologic processes found in the normal breast. However, the occurrence of adenocarcinoma is very rare, the first case being reported by Greene in 1935. We here report the 16th case of primary "breast-like" cancer arising in the vulva, together with a critical review of the literature, in order to highlight the dilemmas of a clinical approach to this neoplasm. Clear guidelines for diagnosis and therapy are still unavailable. The main diagnost

Breast metastases of eccrine porocarcinoma.

Eccrine porocarcinoma is a rare skin adnexal malignant neoplasm that may arise from a pre-existing benign eccrine poroma or without a predisposing factor. It is a highly invasive neoplasm and has a strong metastatic potential. The most frequently affected organs are the lymph nodes and rarely solid organs such as the liver, lungs and breast. We report a case of a woman with a history of surgically treated eccrine porocarcinoma that a year later presented with multiple lesions in both breasts and axillary lymphadenopathies. After a detailed imaging investigation, the diagnosis of metastatic les

Malignant melanoma of the breast: controversies in the diagnosis and therapeutic management of a rare nosologic entity.

Melanoma of the breast is an infrequent entity, presenting as either primary or metastatic from extramammary solid neoplasms. Depending on the involvement of the skin, primary malignant melanoma of the breast (PMMB) can be classified as cutaneous or noncutaneous. Cutaneous PMMB accounts for <5% of all melanomas and only 0.5% of all breast cancers. Furthermore, despite the rarity of metastatic breast neoplasms, melanoma comprises a frequent source of metastases. Metastatic potential of melanoma is associated with poor prognosis, and the majority of patients present more than one metastatic foci…

Metastatic breast cancer in regrowth of thyroid lobe after subtotal thyroidectomy - case report.

Breast cancer is the most common malignant neoplasm among women. Metastases to the thyroid are relatively rare. Those lesions annunciate neoplasm dissemination in most cases. Metastatic breast cancer of thyroid lobe regrowth hasn't been described yet. In the article the authors present a case of a 66-year old women with isolated, metachronous breast cancer metastasis in regrowth of the right thyroid lobe. Resection of the right lobe with metastatic tumor was performed with a purpose of total recovery. Despite surgery, multiple bone metastases were detected a few months after. In conclusion, re
