Twenty-three infants and children aged 2½ months to 13 years with chronic diarrhoea and 6 patients without diarrhoea were investigated for lactose malabsorption with the hydrogen breath test (HBT) adapted for use in young infants and children. A further 8 children with proven or suspected coeliac disease were also investigated. Dysfunctional breathing (DB) is an underdiagnosed condition in young patients presenting with unexplained exertional breathlessness. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) provides valuable diagnostic insights in these challenging cases. We present a case series of five young women (mean age 23.2 years) who underwent comprehensive evaluation including CPET and body plethysmography for persistent exertional dyspnea. All patients demonstrated characteristic CPET findings of oscillatory breathing patterns, preserved ventilatory reserve, elevated VE/VCO2 slope, and absence of oxygen desaturation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Breath testing to diagnose intestinal microbial overgrowth (MO) is being increasingly utilized, in part due to direct-to- … iet. Reviewing the latest evidence, we provide recommendations for a personalized interpretation of breath tests utilizing unique patient factors. We conclude with an algorithm to assist clinicians in providing more accurate diagnoses.

The aim of this study was to compare scintigraphy, the standard method, and the (13)C-octanoic acid breath test (OBT) for measuring gastric emptying. Patients with functional dyspepsia (N = 21, 8 men and 13 women; ages, 40-75) underwent standardized dynamic scintigraphy and OBT.
