Endobronchial lipoma. A case report.

An endobronchial lipoma of the right main bronchus causing obstructive pneumonitis and bronchiectasis in a 71-year-old White man is described. Tumourlets were also found in the fibrosed lung. Although the tumour is rare, it is of clinical importance because it can be treated successfully by local excision.

Atelectasis in pediatrics: a case of carcinoid tumor.

Carcinoid pulmonary tumors occur in the fourth to sixth decades of life. Usually, typical carcinoid arise a decade earlier when compared to atypical carcinoid (45 years and 55 years, respectively). Typical carcinoid tumors are the most common primary lung neoplasm in children and late adolescents, but there are less than 40 cases described in the literature. The clinical presentation is nonspecific and usually the symptoms are due to bronchial obstruction, sometimes with recurrent pneumonia. Its rarity may delay diagnosis but in most cases a favorable course after treatment is observed. The au

Late cerebellar relapse of a juvenile bronchial carcinoid.

Although epithelial bronchial neoplasm is a cancer frequently observed in adult patients, it is rarely observed in patients who are children. The most frequent histologic subtype is well differentiated neuroendocrine tumor, or carcinoid. They have a variable biologic behavior, ranging from benign to malignant tumors capable of very late recurrence or metastasis. Liver and lung are frequent sites of carcinoid metastasis, and the central nervous system is exceptionally involved. We report the case of a child with a pulmonary carcinoid initially considered typical, who presented with relapse in t

[Value of 16-slice spiral CT in the diagnosis of tumor-like bronchial tuberculosis].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the value of 16-slice multi-detector CT (MDCT) in the diagnosis of tumor-like bronchial tuberculosis. METHODS: Twenty-five patients with tumor-like bronchial tuberculosis underwent 16-slice CT scanning and the CT data were analyzed. RESULTS: Tumor-like bronchial tuberculosis were classified into 4 types according to the imaging features, namely intra-lumen nodule, intra-lumen mass, compression from outside of the bronchial lumens, and lung hilum mass. Tumor-like bronchial tuberculosis was featured by irregular bronchial wall thickening which led to decreased internal d

[Primary pharyngolaryngeal carcinoma, pulmonary metastases and carcinoma of the bronchus (author's transl)].

On the basis of 112 cases of pulmonary or mediastinal neoplasms observed during the treatment or follow-up of 952 carcinomas of the pharynx and larynx, the authors study in detail 45 cases of metastases. They draw the following conclusions:--metastases present clinically relatively early in the treated course of pharyngolaryngeal carcinomas: 85% before 18 months.--cannonball lesions are the commonest endo-thoracic clinical metastases: 6 out of 10.--carcinomas of the hypopharynx are at the origin of 2/3 of cannonball lesions (alpha less than or equal to 0.02) and 1/4 of mediastinal lymphadenopa

Tumors and tumorlike conditions of the large airways.

OBJECTIVE: Large-airway tumors and tumorlike conditions are uncommon, but a systematic approach aids in narrowing the differential diagnosis. In this article, we describe an approach to dealing with large-airway lesions and discuss their imaging characteristics and clinical presentations. CONCLUSION: We have found it useful to separate these entities into groups on the basis of the distribution pattern (focal vs diffuse) and location (trachea vs bronchi).

Pulmonary sialadenoma papilliferum and its mimics: what you need to know.

Pumonary salivary gland-type tumours (SGT) represent a small but distinct group of primary lung neoplasms. These types of tumours originate from the submucosal bronchial glands of the tracheobronchial tree. Pulmonary SGTs differ greatly in the incidence of individual tumours from salivary gland tumours of the head and neck. Additionally, the vast majority of pulmonary SGT are malignant. Recently, pathological diagnosis has significantly improved with the application of molecular diagnostic technologies. However, the current knowledge of benign SGTs is limited; moreover, tumour diversity and ov

Bronchoalveolar lavage in malignancy.

Bronchoalveolar lavage is a useful diagnostic tool in diffuse or disseminated lung malignancies that do not involve the bronchial structures visible by endoscopy. The neoplastic histotype and the intraparenchymal neoplastic growth pattern are good predictors for diagnostic yield; adenocarcinoma, and tumors with lymphangitic or lepidic growth patterns are more easily diagnosed by bronchoalveolar lavage; in these cases the diagnostic yield reported is higher than 80%. In hematologic malignancies the diagnostic yield is quite good in secondary diffuse indolent B cell lymphomas and in primary B ce

Bronchial fistula associated with sunitinib in a patient previously treated with radiation therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of bronchial fistula associated with sunitinib in a patient previously treated with radiation therapy. CASE SUMMARY: A 40-year-old man with renal cell cancer diagnosed in 2005 and initially treated by radical nephrectomy presented in March 2007 with a recurrence with cerebral, mediastinal, and lung metastases. A thoracic computed tomography (CT) scan showed a subcarinal tumor obstructing the bronchus intermedius. The patient was initially treated with cerebral and thoracic radiotherapy and then with sunitinib 50 mg/day (4 weeks on, 2 weeks off). Two months after th

Endobronchial malignancy as a manifestation of advanced ovarian cancer recurrence: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Endobronchial metastasis from primary ovarian cancer (OC) is very rare. To enhance our understanding of this disease, we present a case report and retrospective analysis of a patient with a bronchial tumor as a manifestation of primary OC recurrence. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 51-year-old woman presented with a history of intermittent cough and expectoration over 3 months by suffocating pneumonia for 3 weeks. Chest X-ray revealed multiple nodular masses at the right upper lobe, soft tissue thickening with bronchial invasion in the left upper lobe, enlargement of the right and left upper

Endobronchial Metastasis From Rectal Cancer Treated by High-Frequency Electrocautery Ablation via Bronchoscope and Targeted Drugs:Report of One Case.

The lungs are the most common sites of metastases from non-pulmonarymalignancies. Endobronchial metastases are rare and have no specificity in clinical manifestations, thus being prone to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. The common tumors associated with endobronchial metastasis are renal, breast, and colorectal cancers. This article reported one case of postoperative rectal cancer with endobronchial and lung metastases, which was relieved by high-frequency electrocautery ablation via bronchoscope, chemotherapy, and targeted drugs, aiming to provide a reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Long-term survival of atypical bronchial carcinoids with liver metastases, treated with octreotide.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that liver metastases by radically resected atypical carcinoids of the lung can be effectively treated by new somatostatin analogs. METHODS: Between January 1977 and December 1999, 126 patients affected by bronchial carcinoids were submitted to a radical resection of the lung. Seven of them (5.5%) presented liver metastases 27, 22, 14, 18, 16, 12 and 9 months after surgery: carcinoid syndrome (CS) was ever present. 111In-DTPA-pentetreotide scintigraphy (Octreoscan) and ultrasound guided biopsy were performed in all cases, and the presence of somatostatin receptors ss
