BACKGROUND: The management of patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) who fail to improve constitutes a challenge for clinicians. This study investigated the usefulness of C-reactive protein (CRP) changes in discriminating true treatment failure from slow response to treatment.
METHODS: This prospective multicenter observational study investigated the behavior of plasma CRP levels on days 1 and 4 in hospitalized patients with CAP. We identified non-responding patients as those who had not reached clinical stability by day 4. Among them, true treatment failure and slow response situat…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Serum levels of highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), a vascular inflammatory marker, may predict the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are at greater risk for type 2 diabetes and CVD. The aim of this study was to compare hsCRP levels between normal weight women with PCOS and controls with a normal menstrual cycle and to determine the factors associated with serum hsCRP levels.
METHODS: Thirty-nine lean PCOS patients and 24 healthy, regular cycling women were enrolled in this study. We performed…

BACKGROUND: C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is considered a predictive factor for cardiovascular events and its serum levels have been shown to correlate with thin cap coronary plaques in sudden coronary death. Whether serum CRP levels are associated with in vivo atherothrombotic features is unclear. We thus analysed samples from coronary atherectomy specimens obtained during percutaneous coronary intervention.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with coronary artery disease undergoing directional atherectomy, distinguished by unstable versus stable coronary syndrome diagnosis, provided coronary specime…

We investigated the effects of fenofibrate on C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in patients with hypertriglyceridemia. Patients with a triglyceride level >or=200 mg/dL were randomly assigned to receive either 200 mg of fenofibrate (n = 54) or general measures (n = 54). A third group of patients with hypercholesterolemia received a statin (n = 54). Patients with a CRP level >or=10 mg/L were excluded. CRP levels were measured before and after 2 months of therapy. Fenofibrate did not reduce CRP levels (1.74 +/- 1.74 vs. 1.54 +/- 1.66 mg/L, P = 0.27) nor did general measures (P = 0.85). Statin reduc…

This study was designed to examine the relationship between pericardial fluid and plasma CRP levels, and to alterations in other biochemical parameters in patients undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG). The study group consisted of 96 Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) patients who were referred to our clinic for a CABG procedure and from whom sufficient amount of pericardial fluid could be collected. The patients were classified into 3 groups: Stable Angina Pectoris (SAP) (n=27), Unstable Angina Pectoris (USAP) (n=36), and Post-Myocardial Infarction (PMI) (n=33). Levels of CRP, glucose

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: C-reactive protein (CRP) is associated with atherogenesis and stroke in mostly elderly subjects. We tested whether elevated CRP may also be linked to spontaneous cervical artery dissection (CAD) and cryptogenic stroke.
METHODS: We investigated high-sensitivity CRP levels in 62 patients <60 years of age experiencing cerebral ischemia resulting from large artery atherosclerosis (LAA; n=21), CAD (n=21), or cryptogenic etiology (n=20) >9 months ago, and in 54 sex- and age-matched population controls. Receiver operating characteristic curve was used to identify the best CRP…

BACKGROUND: Both depression and C-reactive protein (CRP) are markers of increased risk for cardiovascular events. This study examined the relationship between CRP and depression in a cohort of participants undergoing a periodic physical to assess potential for interaction as either mediation or confounding of effect on cardiovascular risk.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of a cohort of 696 consenting, active duty US Army personnel undergoing a periodic physical. We measured depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the depression module of the self-administered versio…

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP) is an important biological marker of inflammation that has been linked to cardiovascular disease. The extent to which the inflammatory processes associated with elevated CRP concentrations impair physical functioning and quality of life, and whether this is modulated by hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (statins) and aspirin, which have been shown to lower CRP concentrations, is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an association exists between CRP concentrations and health-related quality of life among patients with diabetes, and t…

Atherosclerosis remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Western countries. Recent evidence has demonstrated that atherosclerosis is not simply a disease of lipid deposition. Inflammation plays a major role in the initiation, progression, and destabilization of atheromas. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is a circulating acute-phase reactant that reflects active systemic inflammation. Large prospective trials have shown hs-CRP to be a strong predictor of future cardiovascular events. Increased hs-CRP concentration is in fact associated with higher cardiovascular even…

This study investigated the levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and prealbumin in 87 infants suspected of dying from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). These proteins change rapidly, within 24 hr, in patients who have an acute phase response, especially a response resulting from bacterial infection. In addition, prealbumin is sensitive to a recent reduction of protein or calorie intake. Eighty patients were determined to have typical SIDS. Only four of these had a minimal increase in CRP (0.8-2 mg/dl), and in none could an explanation be found. Seven patients were uncovered who had a signific…

C-reactive protein (CRP) was isolated from equine serum by use of calcium-dependent affinity chromatography conjugated pneumococcal C-polysaccharide, anion exchange chromatography, and gel filtration. It was identified as genuine CRP by its immunochemical cross-reactivity with anti-human CRP, its homology with human CRP in amino acid composition, and its pentameric structure as revealed by electron microscopy. Purified equine CRP had a molecular weight of approximately 118,000 and was composed of 5 identical, nonglycosylated and noncovalently associated subunits with molecular weight of approx…

The results of C-reactive protein (CRP) measurements in 176 patients hospitalized with suspected systemic meningococcal disease (MCd) are presented. 115 patients had meningococcal disease and 61 patients had other diseases and served as control patients. On admission to hospital high CRP levels were found in patients with meningococcal disease, markedly above the levels found in patients with viral infections. The CRP level fell to nearly normal level during the first week of treatment. CRP on admission to hospital had no prognostic value. Pretreatment CRP level can be valuable in the differen…

Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured at presentation to the hospital in 15 children with proven bacterial meningitis (BM) pretreated with antibiotics. CRP exceeded the upper normal limit of 19 mg/l in all cases; the mean value was 195 mg/l (range, 55 to 375 mg/l). On the other hand, CRP levels were normal in 12 patients with viral meningitis or meningoencephalitis. Rapid determination of serum CRP should be performed whenever BM is suspected.
