Carcinosarcoma (CS) of the bladder is a rare malignancy of the genitourinary tract that is highly aggressive with unfavorable prognoses. Data regarding the epidemiological and clinicopathological characteristics of CS of the urinary bladder have been limited due to the low reported incidence of the tumor. In particular, there is little evidence on recurrence patterns and surveillance after definitive surgical therapy. In this case report, we describe a urethral recurrence of CS after radical cystoprostatectomy for CS of the bladder. The goal of this case report is to review our current underst…

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical utility of CA125 measurement in patients with uterine carcinosarcoma (CS).
METHODS: Ninety-five consecutive patients treated for CS at a single institution were identified. All 54 patients who underwent preoperative CA125 measurement were included in the study. Data were abstracted from the medical records. Tests of association between preoperative CA125 and previously identified clinicopathologic prognostic factors were performed using Fisher's exact test and Pearson chi-square test. To evaluate the relationship of CA125 elev…

Thyroid carcinosarcoma (TCS) is a rare and aggressive malignant tumor, typically reported as a primary thyroid neoplasm. Here, we present an unusual case of TCS occurring in the chest wall. The patient was a 66-year-old woman with a history of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) diagnosed 12 years prior. She received two courses of radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy (200 mCi and 150 mCi) five years ago for metastatic disease in cervical lymph nodes and lungs. Four years after completing RAI treatment, she presented with a progressively enlarging left chest wall mass, which was surgically resected …

Carcinosarcoma is a malignant tumor of biphasic character consisting of epithelial and mesenchymal components. This rarely-seen tumor has an exceedingly aggressive nature. While it is rare in the urinary system, it appears even more rarely in the renal pelvis. Thus, there are few publications in the literature on carcinosarcomas originating from the renal pelvis. This paper presents a 42-year-old male patient with carcinosarcoma of the renal pelvis (CSRP), kidney stone disease, and a nephrocutaneous fistula who underwent radical nephrectomy and eventually died of metastatic disease. The rarity…

Carcinosarcomas (CSs) of the endometrium have admixture of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. The carcinomatous component exhibit endometrioid, serous, or clear cell differentiation, or are undifferentiated. CSs are considered homologous or heterologous according to the type of sarcomatous component. Sertoliform endometrioid carcinomas (SECs) of the endometrium which comprise a rare subtype of endometrial cancer, typically occur in the ovary. SECs as a carcinomatous component of CS of the endometrium have not been reported. Here, we report an endometrial carcinosarcoma that conta…

Carcinosarcoma is a rare histological event in the history of prostatic malignancies. Historically aggressive tumours with dismal outcomes reported in scarce literature available so far. Very few recent studies suggest good outcomes with modern era surgery and radiotherapy techniques in localised disease. The case presented here had no history of known risk factors like prior adenocarcinoma or prior radiation therapy. This case presented with obstructive urinary symptoms with no prostate-specific antigen elevation, diagnosed with imaging, managed aggressively with robotic surgery. Detailed imm…

We report a 50 year old male who presented with a short history of gross hematuria. An ultrasonogram detected a mass arising from the right lateral wall of the urinary bladder. Computed tomography of the abdomen revealed that the mass was a calcified lesion mimicking a bladder stone. Cystoscopy confirmed the presence of the calcified lesion and biopsy revealed a rare biphasic tumor of the urinary bladder comprising of osteosarcoma and a papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential. The rarity of this tumor and its associated exuberant calcification make this case an interesting one

The clinical case of a 73-year-old man with a history of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, an ulcerated mass on the left hemitrigone and left hydronephrosis who underwent radical cystoprostatectomy and urinary diversion followed by cisplatin-gemcitabine chemotherapy is presented. Pathological examination revealed a biphasic mixed tumor characterized by an epithelial and a mesenchymal component. At 24 months of follow-up the patient is alive and free from recurrent disease, with good quality of life and preserved renal function. Carcinosarcoma is highly aggressive and often has a dism…

Pancreatic carcinosarcoma is a rare and aggressive malignancy that can mimic pancreatic adenocarcinomas in presentation but often has different disease biology and different responses to conventional treatment for pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Case reports have documented a 5-year overall survival of approximately 13% only if the disease is caught at an earlier stage and is amenable to multi-modality treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. In the advanced stage, treatments do not often provide benefit, and patients may decline rapidly. There are currently no studies demonstrati…

RATIONALE: Bladder carcinosarcoma (BC) is a malignant tumor composed of a mixture of malignant epithelial and stromal components. Carcinosarcoma mostly occurs in the upper respiratory tract and upper gastrointestinal tract and is less common in the urinary system. The incidence of malignant tumors of the urinary system is <3%. It rarely occurs in the bladder and accounts for approximately 0.31% of all malignant bladder tumors. A literature review and this report will help to further improve our understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of bladder carcinosarcoma (BC).
PATIENT CONCERN: We describ…

A 12-year-old castrated male Cane Corso dog was presented with cervical swelling, lethargy, anorexia, and cough. An extensive neck mass with necrotic cysts was observed, severely adherent to surrounding tissues. Based on diagnostic imaging including ultrasound, computed tomography, and fine-needle aspiration cytology, paraesophageal abscess was tentatively diagnosed. However, after the mass was surgically removed, a diagnosis of thyroid carcinosarcoma composed of neoplastic cell populations with epithelial and mesenchymal origins was made via histopathology and immunohistochemistry. The dog di…

INTRODUCTION: Carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder (CSGB) is very rare, accounting for less than 1% of gallbladder malignancies. Therefore, the biological behavior is not well known. We report the case of a patient with CSGB who showed long-term survival after treatment with surgery and postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 79-year-old man was referred to our department with suspected gallbladder cancer after undergoing positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) scan for preoperative examination of lung cancer, which showed strong accumulation in the gallbladde…

Carcinosarcoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm of the salivary gland that originates from a pre-existing benign tumor. Malignant transformation of the pleomorphic adenoma is extremely rare. The management of carcinosarcoma ex pleomorphic adenoma remains challenging because of its rarity, behavioral aggressiveness and resemblance to benign pleomorphic adenoma. Herein, we present the case of a 75-year-old male resident of Saudi Arabia with a history of a swelling in the right parotid gland for more than 25 years, which grew slowly with time. He underwent surgical r…

The differential diagnosis of ring-enhancing brain lesions in a patient with metastatic malignancy may initially seem straightforward, and easily attributed to brain metastases. On rare occasions, the physician needs to avoid anchoring bias by re-evaluating the entire clinical context in which these ring-enhancing brain lesions are found. We report a case of cerebral toxoplasmosis mimicking brain metastases in a patient with metastatic cancer and without a prior history of human immunodeficiency virus. A 65-year-old lady with a recently detected relapse of her endometrial carcinosarcoma presen…

Primary carcinosarcoma of the liver is extremely rare. Here, we report an unusual case of carcinosarcoma of the liver containing combined hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. A 66-year-old man with a history of viral hepatitis B was admitted for investigation of multiple liver masses. Dynamic computed tomography revealed a mostly hypoenhancing main tumor with a peripheral ring enhancement and several satellite nodules. After transcatheter arterial chemoembolization and portal vein embolization, an extended right posterior sectionectomy was performed. The resected tumor was macrosco…
