Relationship of social and economic factors to mental disorders among population-based samples of Jamaicans and Guyanese.

BACKGROUND: There have been growing concerns about increasing mental health problems in the Caribbean region. This study explores rates and factors associated with selected mental health disorders within 2 Caribbean countries: Jamaica and Guyana. METHODS: Probability samples of 1218 Jamaicans and 2068 Guyanese participants were used. A modified version of the WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WHO CIDI) defined by the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) was administered in order to assess lifetime mental disorders. Descriptive statistics,

Heterogeneous distribution of Dirofilaria immitis in dogs in St. Kitts, West Indies, 2014-2015.

In the Caribbean region, Dirofilaria immitis (heartworm) has been detected on almost all of the islands. While it is assumed to be endemic throughout the region, there is a lack of baseline data from the Leeward Islands (north-east of the Caribbean region). The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence and the spatial distribution of heartworm disease in dogs on St. Kitts, a small 174km2 island which is part of the Leeward Islands. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2014 with 100 dogs tested using a commercial antigen test. Dogs were from all regions of the island except the

HIV and HTLV-I infections in the Americas: a regional perspective.

With over 143,000 cases of AIDS reported to the World Health Organization from 145 countries and with an estimated 5 to 10 million people worldwide infected with HIV, AIDS has become firmly established as a global pandemic. In the region of the Americas over 100,862 cases of AIDS have been reported with indigenous transmission documented in 45 to 46 countries. While North America has the highest annual number of AIDS cases per population, with 72 cases/million, the Caribbean subregion has a disproportionately high number of cases, with annual rates as high as 200 to 300 cases/million populatio

Elevated threat status of large-fruited plants is associated with the extinction of large frugivores in the Caribbean islands.

Anthropogenic activities severely impair biodiversity and ecosystem functionality. A prime example is the loss of frugivores and their corresponding seed dispersal services due to defaunation (the decline of animal populations), ultimately affecting the continued persistence of plant species that lack their ecological partners. Loss of frugivores and their biotic interactions can be particularly severe on islands due to their isolation and relatively small area, which is often associated with low functional redundancy. From field observations on the Caribbean Virgin Islands, we found that only

Chemical profile of Thalassia testudinum under coastal pollution: Assessment of mercury, VOCs and secondary metabolites in the Colombian Caribbean.

Seagrass meadows of Thalassia testudinum are key components of blue carbon ecosystems and effective bioindicators of environmental contamination due to their ability to incorporate both inorganic and organic pollutants. This study evaluated total mercury (T-Hg) concentrations and the qualitative occurrence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and secondary metabolites in T. testudinum collected from two sites with contrasting environmental pressures in the Colombian Caribbean: Cartagena Bay (CTG Bay) and the reference area within the Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park (

The Ecological, Biological, and Social Determinants of Dengue Epidemiology in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

Dengue has re-emerged in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) over the last five decades. The factors influencing dengue transmission by the Aedes aegypti mosquito vector within the region can be classified as ecological, biological, and social determinants. In this review, we summarized the published literature on the evidence for the determinants of dengue vector dynamics, transmission, and epidemiological outcomes in LAC. We searched PubMed, SCOPUS, and LILACS databases in September 2022 to collect published works irrespective of study design published in either English, French, Portuguese

Central sleep apnea and exposure to ambient hydrogen sulfide emissions from massive strandings of decomposing sargassum in the Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: Sargassum invasion of Caribbean and American shorelines is a recurring environmental hazard. Potential health effects of long-term chronic exposure to sargassum gaseous emissions, notably hydrogen sulfide (H2S), are overlooked. H2S plays an important role in neurotransmission and is involved in generating and transmitting respiratory rhythm. Central sleep apnea (CSA) has been attributed to the depression of respiratory centers. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effects of exposure to sargassum-H2S on CSA. METHODS: This study, set in the Caribbean, describes the clinical and polysomnographi

Ancylostoma in dogs in the Caribbean: a review and study from St. Kitts, West Indies.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the prevalence of Ancylostoma in dogs in the Caribbean. In view of the number of owned free-roaming and feral dogs within the islands and the ideal subtropical climate for parasite development and environmental survival, Ancylostoma could pose a threat to the health of the dogs as well as a zoonotic risk to people. METHODS: To determine whether generalities about Ancylostoma in dogs in the Caribbean could be made and to obtain a better understanding of the prevalence, published (Scielo, Scopus, and PubMed databases) and gray (e.g., student theses, conference

Reproductive diseases in captive Agoutis (Dasyprocta leporina).

Reproductive diseases have been well documented in domestic livestock such as sheep, goat, cattle and pigs. However, there is very little information on these diseases in the agouti (Dasyprocta leporina). The agouti is used for its meat in South America and the Caribbean. More recently, intensive farming of this animal is being practiced in the Neotropics. There is dearth of information on dystocia and vaginal prolapses in the agouti. This document reports on three cases of reproductive diseases in captive reared agoutis in Trinidad and Tobago. The first case was a female agouti weighing appro

Exposure to environmental neurotoxic substances and neurodevelopment in children from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Environmental (and occupational) exposure to neurotoxic substances is a worldwide problem that can affect children's neurodevelopment (ND). In Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries there are over 300 million children living under the threat of neurodevelopmental delays due to toxic environmental exposure. Large industrial centers, intense mining and agricultural activities, along with changing complex ecosystems constitute a mosaic that drives contamination of air, water and the food chain. Neurotoxic contaminants such as pesticides (organochlorines, organophosphates, carbamates, pyreth

Cuba's Role in International Atomic Energy Agency Regional Cooperation in Cardiology.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, and a health problem in low- and middle-income as well as high-income countries. They also constitute the main cause of death in Latin America, with ischemic heart disease as the principal cause in most countries of the region. In Cuba, heart disease is the first cause of death, followed by cancer and stroke. In its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the UN recognizes the importance of chronic non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases. Aspergillus sydowii and Other Potential Fungal Pathogens in Gorgonian Octocorals of the Ecuadorian Pacific.

Emerging fungal diseases are threatening ecosystems and have increased in recent decades. In corals, the prevalence and consequences of these infections have also increased in frequency and severity. Coral reefs are affected by an emerging fungal disease named aspergillosis, caused by Aspergillus sydowii. This disease and its pathogen have been reported along the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Colombia. Despite this, an important number of coral reefs worldwide have not been investigated for the presence of this pathogen. In this work, we carried out the surveillance of the main coral reef of

A Review of Melioidosis Cases in the Americas.

Melioidosis is a bacterial infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, a gram-negative saprophytic bacillus. Cases occur sporadically in the Americas with an increasing number of cases observed among people with no travel history to endemic countries. To better understand the incidence of the disease in the Americas, we reviewed the literature, including unpublished cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of 120 identified human cases, occurring between 1947 and June 2015, 95 cases (79%) were likely acquired in the Americas; the mortality rate was 39%. Burkholderia

Development of a diagnostic single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panel for identifying geographic origins of Cochliomyia hominivorax, the New World screwworm.

The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax, causes myiasis in livestock, humans, and other warm-blooded animals in much of South America and the Caribbean. It has been eradicated from North and Central America using the sterile insect technique and a biological barrier is currently maintained at the Panama - Colombian border. However, C. hominivorax is still a threat to eradicated areas as outbreaks can and do occur. In order to identify the origin of a fly involved in an outbreak scenario, diagnostic tools would be beneficial. Recently, the geographic population structure of this specie

Knowledge, attitudes and practices about dengue vaccines in Latin America and the Caribbean: a scoping review.

Dengue remains a major public health concern in Latin America and the Caribbean, where vaccination has emerged as a key strategy to reduce severe disease. However, its successful implementation depends on population knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP). This study aimed to synthesize available evidence on KAP related to dengue vaccination in the region. A scoping review was conducted following JBI guidelines. Searches were performed in international and regional databases, including MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, SciELO, and the Virtual Health Library. Original studies we

Myasthenia gravis in Latin America and the Caribbean: epidemiology, resources, and accessibility to diagnosis and treatment.

Latin-American and Caribbean (LAC) countries face persistent challenges in achieving universal health coverage, with out-of-pocket healthcare expenditures posing a significant barrier. Access to care for rare diseases, such as myasthenia gravis (MG), is significantly impacted. We conducted an exploratory descriptive study between LAC countries, and we assessed the availability of diagnostic and therapeutic resources for MG across 12 LAC countries, along with associated costs and access barriers. We found marked inequalities regarding the availability and coverage of diagnostic tests and therap

Estimated costs of treating two standardised diabetes-related foot ulcers of different severity - A comparison of 7 global regions.

AIMS: To determine estimated costs to treat two hypothetical diabetes related foot ulcers of differing severity in different World Health Organization regions. METHODS: Descriptions of two standardised diabetes related foot ulcers of differing severity were sent to foot teams. Each centre was sent a picture and description of the ulcers, and a series of potential interventions. Respondents were asked to estimate how much each intervention would cost in their centre, and how many times each would be required before the ulcer would heal. These estimated costs were converted to US dollars. RESU
