[Cat scratch disease - a neglected zoonosis].

Cat scratch disease is a relatively rare infection that is caused by the bacterium Bartonella henselae. This disease occurs after cat scratch or bite. The course of the disease depends on the patients immunity status. In immunocompetent patients, the disease typically runs as a lymph node syndrome. Sometimes, mild general symptoms may appear, or the course can be atypical with a more serious clinical manifestation involving various organs. In immunocompromised patients, Bartonella henselae can cause bacillary angiomatosis or peliosis with a severe course.

Cat-scratch disease and bone scintigraphy.

Cat-scratch disease is a bacterial infection caused by Bartonella henselae. Bone involvement is rare. We describe the case of a 7-year-old boy with a systemic form of the disease. He presented with a 15-day history of fever, altered general condition, weight loss and cough, associated with back pain, and right-sided coxalgia. Bone scintigraphy with Tc-99m hydroxymethylene diphosphonate showed spinal involvement, the iliac crest, the right ankle, and the right first metatarsal. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed these locations. He was positive for anti-Bartonella henselae. The fever regresse

Feline bartonellosis and cat scratch disease.

Bartonella species are important emerging zoonotic pathogens. Transmission of these organisms in nature may be much more complex than is currently appreciated. Cats can be infected with five Bartonella species, including, Bartonella henselae, Bartonella clarridgeae, Bartonella bovis, Bartonella koehlerae and Bartonella quintana. In addition to cats, numerous domestic and wild animals, including bovine, canine, human, and rodent species can serve as chronically infected reservoir hosts for various intra-erythrocytic Bartonella species. In addition, an increasing number of arthropod vectors, inc

Cat scratch disease during etanercept therapy.

Lymphadenopathy in a patient taking TNFalpha antagonist therapy may indicate lymph node tuberculosis or a hematological malignancy. Although histological evidence of granuloma suggests tuberculosis, many other infections responsible for granulomatous reactions have been reported in patients on TNFalpha antagonist therapy. We report a case of granulomatous lymphadenopathy due to Bartonella henselae in a patient taking etanercept to treat ankylosing spondylitis.

[A case of cat scratch disease].

Cat scratch disease (CSD) which is usually seen in children and young adults and characterized by self limited lymphadenopathy, is caused by Bartonella henselae. In this report, a 30-year-old male patient who was admitted to the outpatient clinic with the complaint of lymphadenopathy, was presented. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C reactive protein values of the patient were normal, and anti-HIV, Brucella agglutination and anti-toxoplasma IgM and IgG tests were negative. No bacterial growth was detected in the cultures of repetetive blood samples and biopsy specimens taken from the right a

Cat-scratch disease in elderly patients.

BACKGROUND: Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is mostly contracted by children and young adults. To our knowledge, CSD in elderly patients has never been characterized, and it may be underrecognized in this age group. METHODS: The study population included all patients with CSD diagnosed at our reference laboratory during 1991-2002. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data for patients with CSD aged >or=60 years (elderly group) were compared with data for patients with CSD aged <60 years (nonelderly group). RESULTS: There were 846 immunocompetent patients with CSD included in this study. Fifty-two

[Pseudotumoral presentation of cat scratch disease].

BACKGROUND: A frequent cause of chronic benign lymphadenopathy, cat-scratch disease (CSD) occurs mainly in children and young adults. Bartonella henselae is the agent responsible for CSD. The most common symptoms of the disease are regional lymphadenopathy and fever. Atypical forms occur in about 10% of patients; among them, CSD may initially present as a tumor. CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old child developed a 'tumor' of the arm with fever. The values of white blood cell count and CRP were normal. Ultrasonography, MRI and arteriography did not contribute to the diagnosis, which was established on

[Splenic abscess and cat-scratch disease].

Cat-scratch disease is caused by a Gram-negative bacillus known as Bartonella henselae. This disease is usually benign and causes regional adenitis that does not require treatment. However, some patients develop more serious atypical forms of the disease including prolonged systemic illness with hepatic and splenic abscesses.A 14-year-old girl was admitted to hospital with a 12-day history of persistent high fever and abdominal pain. Ultrasonography and computerized tomography of the abdomen revealed splenic abscesses. These findings, together with an antecedent of cat exposure, led to the sus

[Mediastinal form of cat-scratch disease].

The authors reported a case of Cat--Scratch Disease (CSD) in a 14-year-old boy; it was an unusual CSD by its mediastinal mass location. Histopathological lesions which appeared as pseudo-tubercular folliculi mislead us. Disease was finally diagnosed by biological exams: a strongly positive Hanger-Rose reaction and serological assays used for the diagnosis of psittacosis, ornithosis, lymphagranuloma venereum and trachoma. CSD is a common cause of chronic lymphadenopathy in children. In the majority of patients, CSD is a mild illness. Some unusual forms as Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome, neu

Cat-scratch disease simulating Histiocytosis X.

Cat-scratch disease is a self-limited condition commonly causing a benign chronic lymphadenopathy in children. Osteolytic lesions are a rare complication, but have been previously reported. We report a case of a solitary osteolytic lesion of the skull whose clinical, radiographic and pathological features were initially interpreted as being consistent with Histiocytosis X. Subsequently, positive serological titers for Bartonella, a history of a cat-scratch antecedent to the onset of clinical symptoms and review of the original histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of cat-scratch disease. We r

[Cutaneous vasculitis disclosing cat-scratch disease].

BACKGROUND: We describe a case of cat-scratch disease ingnaugurated by vascular purpura and discuss the role of the causal agent, Bartonella henselae. CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old woman presented vascular purpura without fever. Skin biopsy demonstrated leukocytoclasic vasculitis. She owned a cat and a had a scratch scar on the back of her left hand. A few days later, two inflammatory epitrochlear lymph nodes suppurated. Catscratch disease was confirmed by serology and PRC analysis of pus aspirated from the nodes. The purpura resolved spontaneously in three weeks. Left axillary adenopathy develo

Cat scratch disease in a child.

We report a case of a 9-year-old girl scratched on the right side of her neck by a kitten about one month prior to admission. She was well until three weeks later when she developed enlarged right neck masses, a pustula on the scratch site, right injected conjunctiva, headache, general malaise and fever, thus fulfilling the clinical criteria for CSD. Initially, she was treated by a practicing physician but the manifestations persisted for one week. After admission, leukocytosis and a mildly elevated erythrocyte sedimentary rate were noted. The serum IgG titer to Bartonella henselae was perform

Imaging manifestations of cat-scratch disease.

Cat-scratch disease affects an estimated 22,000 people in the United States each year, more than half of whom are children or adolescents [1]. It is caused by Bartonella henselae, a gram-negative bacillus usually introduced by the scratch of a cat [2]. In the past, diagnosis was made if three of the following four criteria were met: (1) history of cat exposure with inoculation, (2) positive skin test: (3) absent laboratory and histopathologic evidence of other diseases, and (4) biopsy findings of granulomatous inflammation [3]. Recent identification of the causative organism has led to new dia

[Cat scratch disease in immunocompetent children].

First cause of chronic benign lymphadenopathy, cat scratch disease occurs mainly in children and young adults. The nature of its bacterial agents is not definitely established, but Atlanta's CDC actually considers Afipia felis and Rochalimaea hensaela as the agents of the disease. It usually presents as chronic adenitis but there are severe forms of the disease with systemic manifestation. In such forms, new techniques such as serology and molecular biology are particularly useful for the diagnosis. The prognosis is always excellent and an antibiotic treatment is only recommended for systemic
