A Case of Asymptomatic Cement Migration Into the Pulmonary Arteries.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is a minimally invasive procedure used for the treatment of pathological vertebral fractures. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is injected into the fractured vertebrae, which leaks to the surrounding tissues and travels to the pulmonary circulation in a significant proportion of cases. We report the case of a 65-year-old asymptomatic woman with multiple linear opacities on a chest X-ray, conducted two months after the procedure. The case was managed conservatively due to the absence of any concerning features. Although PMMA pulmonary artery embolism is not a rar

Expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of cemental tear.

Cemental tear is a rare and indetectable condition unless obvious clinical signs present with the involvement of surrounding periodontal and periapical tissues. Due to its clinical manifestations similar to common dental issues, such as vertical root fracture, primary endodontic diseases, and periodontal diseases, as well as the low awareness of cemental tear for clinicians, misdiagnosis often occurs. The critical principle for cemental tear treatment is to remove torn fragments, and overlooking fragments leads to futile therapy, which could deteriorate the conditions of the affected teeth. Th

From 2D kaolinite to 3D amorphous cement.

Kaolinite is a single 2D layer of kaolin or metakaolin (MK), common clays that can be characterized as layered 3D materials. We show that because of its chemical composition, kaolinite can be converted into an amorphous 3D material by chemical means. This dimensional transformation is possible due to the large surface to volume ratio and chemical reactivity of kaolinite. We investigate the formation and influence of quasi- or nanocrystalline phases in MK-based alkali-activated materials (AAM) that are related to the Si/Al ratio. We analyze the formation of an AAM from a MK precursor, which is

Antibiotic-Mixed Cement Filling for Chronic Osteomyelitis.

Background/Objectives: Traditional treatment for chronic osteomyelitis is temporary implantation of antibiotic-impregnated cement beads, followed by bone grafting after the infection is controlled. In this way, a staged operation is needed, and undergoing repetitive general anesthesia is a burden. Moreover, damage to the soft tissue at the surgical site due to several incisions is a concern. This study was conducted to investigate the outcomes of one-stage antibiotic-mixed cement blocks, instead of beads, used as a primary salvage procedure to treat chronic osteomyelitis of the foot, ankle, an

Modalities of failure of cement-augmented pedicle screws.

INTRODUCTION: Cement-augmented pedicle screw instrumentation procedures are performed for stabilization in patients with surgical spinal conditions with poor bone quality at the target levels. Although this is done to combat the risk of failure due to loosening, cutting out or pulling out of the screws, failure may still occur. The purpose of this study was to identify the modalities and rates of failure of CAPSI constructs to better predict occurrence of failure. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed clinical data of patients who underwent CAPSI fusion procedures between 2010 and 2022. We col

Assessment of Cement Leakage in Decompressed Percutaneous Kyphoplasty.

Symptomatic osteoporotic compression fractures are commonly addressed through vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. However, cement leakage poses a significant risk of neurological damage. We introduced "aspiration percutaneous kyphoplasty", also known as "decompressed kyphoplasty", as a method to mitigate cement leakage and conducted a comparative analysis with high viscosity cement vertebroplasty. We conducted a retrospective study that included 136 patients with single-level osteoporotic compression fractures. Among them, 70 patients underwent high viscosity cement vertebroplasty, while 66 patien

Development and Evaluation of Insulation Materials for Deepwater Cementing.

Marine oil and gas resources are abundant in deepwater regions, where the shallow seabed harbors natural gas hydrate layers due to the cold temperature and high-pressure environment. Hydrates are prone to thermal decomposition, which can compromise the integrity of cement sealing and even lead to accidents like blowouts. While current low-hydrated heat cement systems mitigate hydrate decomposition from cement hydration heat during the waiting period for cementing, they do not address heat transfer from deep strata to shallow hydrate layers through fluid circulation in the tubing during deep oi

Asymptomatic Intracardiac Cement Embolism Following Kyphoplasty.

Cement extravasation can occur during vertebral body augmentation such as kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty with diverse presentation and resultant treatment. The cement can embolize through venous vasculature to the thorax where it poses a potential threat to the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. A thorough risk-benefit analysis should be conducted to select the appropriate treatment course. We present an asymptomatic case of cement extravasation to the heart and lungs during kyphoplasty.

[Calcaneoplasty with radiofrequency cementing following balloon reduction].

The standard surgical procedure for complex calcaneal fractures is open reduction, internal reduction and internal stable angle plate osteosynthesis via a lateral approach. More recently, options for minimally invasive and percutaneous surgical strategies have been presented [4, 7]. As a possible procedural alternative for a covered, surgical treatment of calcaneal fractures, calcaneoplasty is discussed and applied in this context [5]. In this case series of five complex calcaneal fractures presented here, a balloon catheter was used for percutaneous reduction to restore the alignment of the c

Use of Onlay Hydroxyapatite Cement for Secondary Cranioplasty.

BACKGROUND: Children who undergo bi-fronto-orbital advancement (BFOA) frequently develop a contour deformity on the temporal and supra-orbital region, with an incidence reported as high as 55% and 75%, respectively. Up to 20% of patients may require correction. Hydroxyapatite cement (HAC) is a good alternative to autogenous tissue. The available literature on its use focusses on the reconstruction of bone defects, but little has been published on its efficacy and safety as an onlay graft over intact cranium. OBJECTIVES: To describe our institution's experience with HAC in the pediatric popula

Effect of Perlite Particles on Barite Cement Properties.

Conventional heavy-weight oil and gas well cement systems formulated with barite exhibit high viscosities. Additionally, the heavy-weight powder tends to settle, causing density variation and disruption in the porosity of the hardened cement cores. Studies have shown that such problems can be mitigated by controlling the particle size distribution of the cement system. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of perlite powder particles on the fluid and hardened properties of barite-based cement systems. Barite heavy-weight cement slurries containing 0, 1, 2, and 3% by weight

Retention of cemented zirconia copings on TiBase abutments.

This study evaluated the influence of resin cements and glass ionomers on tensile strength and types of failure of zirconia copings cemented on titanium base abutments. Forty-two samples were prepared, which were formed by a Cone Morse implant, a titanium abutment with the fixing screw, and a zirconia structure made using a CAD/CAM system. The samples (n = 42) were randomly distributed according to the cementing agent: resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RelyX Luting 2), self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200), and self-curing resin cement (Multilink N). After cementation of the copings, half…

Bone Cements in Depressed Frontal Bone Fractures.

Skull fractures can be classified into four major types; linear, depressed, diastatic, and basilar. Of these, a depressed skull fracture presents a high risk of increased intracranial pressure or hemorrhage to the brain. A compound depressed skull fracture results when a laceration over the fracture exposes the internal cranial cavity to the outside environment. Such depressed skull fractures are indicated for elevation if the defect is more than 10 mm and in the presence of brain injury. Frontal bone contour defects result in marked facial deformity which becomes obvious to the observer. Esth

Intracardiac cement embolism resulting in tricuspid regurgitation.

Bone cement leakage is a common complication after percutaneous kyphoplasty. In rare cases, leakage into the venous system occurs, which can be life-threatening, especially when it embolizes the heart. Here, we present a case of cement embolization of the right ventricle with tricuspid valve involvement. A 69-year-old woman with an asymptomatic severe tricuspid valve regurgitation was referred to our department. She had a history of balloon kyphoplasty because of osteoporotic collapsed vertebrae in 2010. Echocardiography showed a foreign body attached to the right ventricle, prolapsing into th

Feasibility of ossicular chain reconstruction with resin cement.

INTRODUCTION: Disjunction of ossicular chain is a common finding in middle ear chronic disease. In addition to ossicular interposition, various materials have been used for reconstruction, such as ceramic prostheses, polyethylene, and titanium. OBJECTIVE: Because of the high cost of the available options, the authors propose to reconstruct the ossicular chain with resin cement, a material typically used in dental reconstruction and fixation. METHODS: Two anatomical parts of the temporal bones were used, creating a disjunction of the ossicular chain between the incus and staples and then reco

Pulmonary Cement Embolism following Percutaneous Vertebroplasty.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty is a minimal invasive procedure that is applied for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. During vertebroplasty, the leakage of bone cement outside the vertebral body leads to pulmonary cement embolism, which is a serious complication of this procedure. Here we report a 48-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital with dyspnea after percutaneous vertebroplasty and diagnosed as pulmonary cement embolism.
