Visualizing Opportunity Index Data Using a Dashboard Application: A Tool to Communicate Infant Mortality-Based Area Deprivation Index Information.

BACKGROUND: An area deprivation index (ADI) is a geographical measure that accounts for socioeconomic factors (e.g., crime, health, and education). The state of Ohio developed an ADI associated with infant mortality: Ohio Opportunity Index (OOI). However, a powerful tool to present this information effectively to stakeholders was needed. OBJECTIVES: We present a real use-case by documenting the design, development, deployment, and training processes associated with a dashboard solution visualizing ADI data. METHODS: The Opportunity Index Dashboard (OID) allows for interactive exploration of

Scientific Advances from Sharing URECA Data in Collaborative Analyses.

The NIH-sponsored Urban Environment and Childhood Asthma (URECA) study of families in low-income, urban neighborhoods has provided important insights in this population but has a limited capacity to investigate risk factors across broader geographic and sociodemographic settings. To overcome this shortcoming, URECA investigators have shared data with multiple NIH-sponsored birth cohorts and investigators, including the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes program and the Children's Allergy and Asthma Data Repository. We collaboratively developed methods, including a novel array to

Internal migration and its association with childhood asthma in Ecuador: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Differences in asthma prevalence between urban and rural areas have been observed worldwide. Epidemiological studies in middle- and low-income countries suggest that internal migration processes may partly explain these disparities. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between internal migration and asthma in children living in transitional areas of Ecuador. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from a birth cohort of children living in a tropical coastal region in northwestern Ecuador. Asthma indicators included wheezing in the past 12 months, ever wheez

"Freedom to Breathe": Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) to Investigate Air Pollution Inequities in Richmond, CA.

Air pollution is a major contributor to human morbidity and mortality, potentially exacerbated by COVID-19, and a threat to planetary health. Participatory research, with a structural violence framework, illuminates exposure inequities and refines mitigation strategies. Home to profitable oil and shipping industries, several census tracts in Richmond, CA are among the most heavily impacted by aggregate burdens statewide. Formally trained researchers from the Center for Environmental Research and Children's Health (CERCH) partnered with the RYSE youth justice center to conduct youth participato

Associations between injection risk and community disadvantage among suburban injection drug users in southwestern Connecticut, USA.

Increases in drug abuse, injection, and opioid overdoses in suburban communities led us to study injectors residing in suburban communities in southwestern Connecticut, US. We sought to understand the influence of residence on risk and injection-associated diseases. Injectors were recruited by respondent-driven sampling and interviewed about sociodemographics, somatic and mental health, injection risk, and interactions with healthcare, harm reduction, substance abuse treatment, and criminal justice systems. HIV, hepatitis B and C (HBV and HCV) serological testing was also conducted. Our sample

The relationship between odour annoyance scores and modelled ambient air pollution in Sarnia, "Chemical Valley", Ontario.

This study aimed at establishing the relationship between annoyance scores and modelled air pollution in "Chemical Valley", Sarnia, Ontario (Canada). Annoyance scores were taken from a community health survey (N = 774); and respondents' exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) and sulphur dioxide (SO(2)) were estimated using land use regression (LUR) models. The associations were examined by univariate analysis while multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the determinants of odour annoyance. The results showed that odour annoyance was significantly correlated to modelled pollutants a

The political ecology of disaster: an analysis of factors influencing U.S. tornado fatalities and injuries, 1998-2000.

This study examines casualties from tornadoes in the United States between the years 1998 and 2000. A political model of human ecology (POET) was used to explore how the environment, technology, and social inequality influence rates of fatalities and injuries in two models. Data were drawn from four sources: John Hart's Severe Plot v2.0, National Weather Service (NWS) Warning Verification data, Storm Prediction Center (SPC) watch data, and tract-level census data. Negative binomial regression was used to analyze the causes of tornado fatalities and injuries. Independent variables (following PO

Application of the automated spatial surveillance program to birth defects surveillance data.

BACKGROUND: Although many birth defects surveillance programs incorporate georeferenced records into their databases, practical methods for routine spatial surveillance are lacking. We present a macroprogram written for the software package R designed for routine exploratory spatial analysis of birth defects data, the Automated Spatial Surveillance Program (ASSP), and present an application of this program using spina bifida prevalence data for metropolitan Atlanta. METHODS: Birth defects surveillance data were collected by the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program. We generated ASS

Mortality and childhood residence near the radiologically contaminated Coldwater Creek, St. Louis, Missouri.

BACKGROUND: Under the top-secret Manhattan Project, improperly stored radioactive byproducts from the processing of uranium contaminated Coldwater Creek in north St. Louis County, Missouri. We used the original 1958 Baby Tooth Survey (BTS) linked with the National Death Index (NDI) to investigate whether childhood residential proximity to the creek, as a proxy for radiation exposure, was associated with mortality. METHODS: There were 43 876 eligible participants from the BTS (those outside Greater St. Louis and/or had incomplete covariates were excluded). In December 2023, the NDI was searche

Socioeconomic Inequalities in Small-for-Gestational-Age Births Before and During the Economic Crisis: An Ecologic Study of Trends in 13 Spanish Cities.

Economic recessions can increase socioeconomic inequalities in health. The objective of this study was to analyze socioeconomic inequalities in small-for-gestational-age (SGA) births before and during the Spanish economic crisis. We conducted an ecological study of trends based on 2 periods before the crisis (1999-2003 and 2004-2008) and another during the crisis (2009-2013). The study population was Spanish women resident in 13 cities who had given birth during 1999-2013. The prevalence of SGA was calculated for each census tract. A hierarchical Bayesian model was used to obtain the prevalenc

Disparities in influenza mortality and transmission related to sociodemographic factors within Chicago in the pandemic of 1918.

Social factors have been shown to create differential burden of influenza across different geographic areas. We explored the relationship between potential aggregate-level social determinants and mortality during the 1918 influenza pandemic in Chicago using a historical dataset of 7,971 influenza and pneumonia deaths. Census tract-level social factors, including rates of illiteracy, homeownership, population, and unemployment, were assessed as predictors of pandemic mortality in Chicago. Poisson models fit with generalized estimating equations (GEEs) were used to estimate the association betwe

Temporal, spatial and spatiotemporal analysis of the occurrence of visceral leishmaniasis in humans in the City of Birigui, State of São Paulo, from 1999 to 2012.

INTRODUCTION: In 1999, Birigui and Araçatuba were the first municipalities in the State of São Paulo to present autochthonous cases of visceral leishmaniasis in humans (VLH). The aim of this study was to describe the temporal, spatial and spatiotemporal behaviors of VLH in Birigui. METHODS: Secondary data were obtained from the Notifiable Diseases Information System from 1999 to 2012. The incidence, mortality and case fatality rates by sex and age were calculated. The cases of VLH were geocoded and grouped according to census tracts. Local empirical Bayesian incidence rates were calculated. T

Giving TB wheels: Public transportation as a risk factor for tuberculosis transmission.

Previous geospatial analysis of the well-defined Houston Tuberculosis Initiative (HTI) database identified an association between the use of city-bus transportation (inclusive of time onboard) and Tuberculosis (TB) incidence in Houston/Harris County census tracts (paper submitted). This paper is an extension of those findings. Contact investigations on school buses have reported a high rate of positive tuberculin skin tests in the persons traveling with the index case and have shown an association with bus ride duration. In Houston, city bus routes are veins connecting even the most diverse of

Spatial analysis and privation index to identify urban areas with a high risk of lymphatic filariasis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate composite living conditions as indicators of urban areas with a higher risk of filariasis transmission. METHODS: This was an ecological study in the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Brazil. The analysis units were census tracts. The study was divided into three phases. First, data gathered during an epidemiological investigation were analysed. Secondly, living condition indicators were drawn up and the relationship between these indicators and microfilaremia prevalence rates was analysed. Thirdly, positive cases were georeferenced with a view to identifying s

Defining core gonorrhea transmission utilizing spatial data.

Spatial distribution of repeat and singly occurring gonorrhea in Baltimore, Maryland, was examined to identify clusters of core transmitters. Gonorrhea reported between 2001 and 2002 was geocoded and mapped. Those with more than one gonorrhea infection separated by more than 14 days during the 2-year period were considered repeaters. Other cases were treated as isolated events. Six definitions of core transmission were examined by census tracts with the highest quintiles of 1) cases for 2001, 2) cases for 2002, 3) rates for 2001, 4) rates for 2002, 5) counts of repeaters over the 2-year period

Demographic inequities and cumulative environmental burdens within communities near superfund sites on Long Island, New York.

Nassau and Suffolk Counties of Long Island, New York are densely populated and contain 34 federally-designated and 449 state-designated Superfund sites, potentially exposing communities to toxic releases. We conducted a distributive justice analysis assessing proximity to Superfund sites, community socio-demographics, and other environmental burdens. Socio-demographic and environmental variables for 665 census tracts were obtained from the United States Census and Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Justice Screening and Mapping Tool. Hierarchical Bayesian spatial Poisson regressio

Geographic Differences in Social Determinants of Health Among US-Born and Non-US-Born Hispanic/Latino Adults With Diagnosed HIV Infection, United States and Puerto Rico, 2017.

OBJECTIVE: HIV disproportionately affects Hispanic/Latino people in the United States, and factors other than individual attributes may be contributing to these differences. We examined differences in the distribution of HIV diagnosis and social determinants of health (SDH) among US-born and non-US-born Hispanic/Latino adults in the United States and Puerto Rico. METHODS: We used data reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National HIV Surveillance System (NHSS) to determine US census tract-level HIV diagnosis rates and percentages among US-born and non-US-born Hispanic/

Association between limited primary care access and higher readmissions and reoperations following elective lumbar fusion.

OBJECTIVE: Lumbar spinal fusion is a common intervention performed for the treatment of degenerative spinal disease. Recent literature has identified disparities in lumbar fusion outcomes relative to socioeconomic status; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The authors hypothesized that access to primary healthcare services could be significantly associated with increased complications and reoperation rates in patients undergoing elective lumbar fusion. They sought to assess the association of low access to primary healthcare with readmissions, reoperations, and complications fo

Spatial variability of the effect of air pollution on term birth weight: evaluating influential factors using Bayesian hierarchical models.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies suggest that air pollution is adversely associated with pregnancy outcomes. Such associations may be modified by spatially-varying factors including socio-demographic characteristics, land-use patterns and unaccounted exposures. Yet, few studies have systematically investigated the impact of these factors on spatial variability of the air pollution's effects. This study aimed to examine spatial variability of the effects of air pollution on term birth weight across Census tracts and the influence of tract-level factors on such variability. METHODS: We obtai
