Ultrastructure of the spermatozoon of Bothriocotyle sp. (Cestoda: Bothriocephalidea), a parasite of Schedophilus velaini (Sauvage, 1879) (Perciformes: Centrolophidae) in Senegal.

The mature spermatozoon of Bothriocotyle sp. is filiform and tapered at both extremities. It possesses 2 axonemes of unequal length, showing the 9 + "1" pattern of Trepaxonemata. The anterior extremity exhibits a crest-like body. Thereafter, the crest-like body disappears, and the first axoneme is surrounded by a ring of cortical microtubules (about 27 units) that persist until the appearance of the second axoneme. This ring of cortical microtubules is characteristic only for species of Bothriocephalidea and represents a very useful phylogenetic character. The spermatozoon cytoplasm is slightl

The taxonomic status of Echinococcus cruzi Brumpt and Joyeux, 1924 (Cestoda: Taeniidae) from an agouti (Rodentia: Dasyproctidae) in Brazil.

Paratype material of Echinococcus cruzi Brumpt and Joyeux, 1924, described from an agouti, Dasyprocta leporina (L.), in Brazil, was compared with Echinococcus oligarthrus (Diesing, 1863), of which the larval stage occurs also in agoutis and other rodents in South America and Central America. Comparisons of the larval cestodes (metacestodes) showed that the rostellar hooks from protoscolices of the two taxa corresponded in form, and their slightly greater lengths in E. cruzi were considered to be of no taxonomic significance. They agreed as well in other morphological characteristics. Echinococ

Orygmatobothrium persiense n. sp. (Cestoda: Phyllobothriidea) from the Arabian Smooth-Hound Shark Mustelus mosis (Triakidae) in the Persian Gulf.

A new species of Orygmatobothrium Diesing, 1863 was discovered from Mustelus mosis Hemprich et Ehrenberg in the north-eastern Persian Gulf. Orygmatobothrium persiense n. sp. is the fourth valid species of its genus and differs from its congeners by the number of the proglottids. In addition, the testes distributed in 3-4 rows deep in cross sections, the length of the cephalic peduncle, and a conspicuous bothridial cleft above the apical sucker distinguish the new species, respectively, from O. juani, O. musteli, and O. schmittii. This is the first time that a species of Orygmatobothrium is des

Genetic diversity of Taenia saginata (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) from Lao People's Democratic Republic and northeastern Thailand based on mitochondrial DNA.

BACKGROUND: Taenia saginata is a tapeworm found in cattle worldwide. Analysis of genetic diversity in different geographical populations of T. saginata not only helps to understand the origin, transmission and spread of this organism, but also to evaluate the selection pressures acting on T. saginata and how it is responding to them. However, there are few reports of the genetic variability of T. saginata populations in different regions of the world, including Lao PDR and Thailand. We report the genetic diversity of T. saginata populations in Lao PDR and northeastern Thailand together with se

Scyphophyllidium garshai n. sp. (Cestoda: Phyllobothriidea) from the Grey Sharpnose Shark, Rhizoprionodon oligolinx Springer, 1964, in the Persian Gulf.

PURPOSE: There is a single species in category 3 of the cestode genus Scyphophyllidium that possesses six bothridial facial loculi. For 19 years, this species was believed to parasitize only sharks of the genus Scoliodon. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether members of Scyphophyllidium with this unique scolex morphology are also found in another shark genus, Rhizoprionodon. METHODS: The tapeworms belonging to a new species, isolated from several specimens of Rhizoprionodon oligolinx from the Persian Gulf, were stained, measured, drawn, and described. RESULTS: Scyphophyllidium ga

Wenyonia gracilis sp. n. (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea) from Synodontis zambezensis (Siluriformes: Mochokidae): the first native caryophyllidean tapeworm from southern Africa.

Parasitological examination of freshwater fishes of the Phongolo River in north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa resulted in the discovery and morphological and molecular characterisation of a new species of Wenyonia Woodland, 1923 (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea). The new species from the plain squeaker, Synodontis zambezensis Peters (Siluriformes: Mochokidae), is morphologically most similar to Wenyonia acuminata Woodland, 1923, a species reported from three species of Synodontis in north-eastern, western and central Africa (Sudan, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo). Description of three new species of Echinobothrium (Cestoda: Diphyllidea) from Indo-Pacific elasmobranchs of the genus Glaucostegus (Rajiformes: Rhinobatidae).

Three new species of diphyllidean cestodes are described from rhinobatid elasmobranchs of the genus Glaucostegus from the Indian and Pacific Oceans. All 3 new species have 11 apical hooks (6 type-A and 5 type-B hooks) and, therefore, differ in this feature from all but 5 of the 39 valid species of Echinobothrium. In addition, Echinobothrium tetabuanense n. sp. from Glaucostegus cf. typus in the Sulu Sea, Borneo differs from all of its congeners in the number and arrangement of hooklets, number of spines on the cephalic peduncle, and the number and distribution of testes. Redescription of Houssayela sudobim (Woodland, 1935) (Cestoda: Proteocephalidea), a parasite of Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum (Pisces: Siluriformes) from the River Amazon.

The proteocephalidean cestode Houssayela sudobim (Woodland, 1935), the type and only species of Houssayela Rego, 1987, is redescribed on the basis of re-examination of its type-specimens and freshly collected material found in the intestine of the barred sudobim Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) from the River Amazon in Peru. The validity of the genus is confirmed, but its diagnosis is amended because suckers possess four pairs of cone-shaped (papilla-like) projections on their anterior margins (rather than 16, as reported in the original description), the actual number of

Lymphoreticular responses to metacestodes: Taenia multiceps (Cestoda) can modify interaction between accessory cells and responder cells during lymphocyte activation.

This study was designed to test the accessory function of macrophages after activation with products of Taenia multiceps coenuri. Activation was carried out by intraperitoneal injection of mice with coenurus fluid or protoscolex culture supernatant, and function was assessed by adding these macrophages in progressively increasing numbers to macrophage-depleted lymphocyte cultures transforming under the influence of plant mitogens or coenurus-fluid mitogen. In contrast to normal macrophages, which have a progressively enhancing action on the above reactions, parasite-activated macrophages at si

The population biology of Hymenolepis tenerrima (Linstow 1882) Fuhrmann 1906 (Cestoda, Hymenolepididae) in its intermediate host Herpetocypris reptans (Ostracoda).

The occurrence of Hymenolepis tenerrima cysticercoids in a population of the intermediate host, Herpetocypris reptans is described for a one year period between October 1980 and September 1981. Parasite occurrence varied seasonally. The prevalence of infection decreased during the winter due to the death of infected hosts and low levels of transmission. Parasite transmission increased during the summer months and the maximum number of cysticercoid stages in the environment occurred in June. Juvenile ostracods were not infected and in adult ostracods a maximum of 3 cysticercoids/host was observ

A review of Triplotaenia undosa Beveridge, 1976 (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) from macropodid marsupials, with the erection of T. macropodis sp. nov.

Molecular evidence (28S DNA) has suggested that Triplotaenia undosa from macropodid marsupials is a species complex. Additional data (cox 1) presented in this study confirmed the hypothesis and a morphological examination of all available specimens identified a new species, T. macropodis sp. nov., in the grey kangaroos Macropus fuliginosus and M. giganteus as well as the tammar wallaby, Notamacropus eugenii, and the red kangaroo, Osphranter rufus. The new species differs in the ratio of the number of testes to the number of female genital complexes. Specimens of T. undosa from the swamp wallab

Specific and non-specific cestodes of shrews (Eulipotyphla: Soricidae) in Europe with a description of Coronacanthus longicirrosus n. sp (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae).

This paper presents a review of host specificity among cestodes collected from Soricidae mammals in Europe and a revision of cestodes preserved in formalin in the collection of the East-Slovakian Museum in Košice. The morphological re-examination of cestodes showed that cestodes found in non-specific hosts (Soricidae and Talpidae) were identified incorrectly. The majority of the redescribed species are specific to a particular host genus. Only one species of the Staphylocystis Villot, 1877 genus, which could be Staphylocystis brusatae (Vaucher, 1971) according to the number, shape and length o
