COMORBID PATHOLOGY IN FATAL CASES DUE TO CORONAVIRUS DISEASE (COVID-19) IN VICTIMS OF THE CHORNOBYL NPP ACCIDENT.

INTRODUCTION: The victims of the Chornobyl accident, as well as whole population of Ukraine, have become the object of the COVID-19 pandemic in today's conditions. As of 01.01.2020, 108,898 victims had documented permanent disability (persons with disabilities) and, as a rule, suffered from 4-6 types of non-tumor chronic diseases of internal organs, primarily the circulatory system, as well as oncological and endocrine pathology, that significantly affect the course of COVID-19 in a severe scenario and contribute to death. This determines the relevance of the issue of the impact of comorbid pa

[Before and after Chernobyl Accident (Memoirs, Researches Hypotheses)].

In the first part of the article the results of studies performed in the 1970-1980s on the progeny of irradiated animals (drosophila, mouse, rat) are presented. It was found that except severe disorders in this progeny named non target genetic radiation effects were observed (genome instability, increased cancer risk, impaired fitness) which were similar to the late somatic radiation effects. The hypothesis on the likeness of pathogenic nature of somatic and genetic effects of ionizing radiation was proposed. Comparison of effects of parental irradiation in humans and animals gave reason to pr

Blastopathies and microcephaly in a Chornobyl impacted region of Ukraine.

This population-based descriptive epidemiology study demonstrates that rates of conjoined twins, teratomas, neural tube defects, microcephaly, and microphthalmia in the Rivne province of Ukraine are among the highest in Europe. The province is 200 km distant from the Chornobyl site and its northern half, a region known as Polissia, is significantly polluted by ionizing radiation. The rates of neural tube defects, microcephaly and microphthalmia in Polissia are statistically significantly higher than in the rest of the province. A survey of at-birth head size showed that values were statistical

Radioactive iodine induces clastogenic and age-dependent aneugenic effects in lymphocytes of thyroid cancer patients as revealed by interphase FISH.

After the Chernobyl nuclear accident, a dramatic 131I-related increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer has been reported in exposed children. However, little is known about the eventual genotoxic effects of 131I in exposed humans. Thyroid cancer patients are usually treated with 131I and, therefore, they provide us with an opportunity to study cytogenetic damage induced by known doses of this radionuclide. FISH techniques have been employed to study the origin of micronuclei as well as X chromosome non-disjunction and X chromosome numerical abnormalities in lymphocytes from 131I-treated wom…

Dose Reconstruction for Epidemiological Studies among Ukrainian Chernobyl Cleanup Workers.

The present paper provides an overview of the methods and summarizes the results of estimating radiation doses and their uncertainties for Ukrainian-American epidemiological studies among the Chernobyl (Chornobyl) cleanup workers. After the Chernobyl accident occurred on April 26, 1986, more than 300,000 Ukrainian cleanup workers took part between 1986 and 1990 in decontamination and recovery activities at the site of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The U.S. National Cancer Institute in collaboration with the Ukrainian National Research Center for Radiation Medicine conducted several epidem

Persistent infections and their relationship with selected oncologic and non-tumor pathologies.

Our earlier studies of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection rates among blood donors at the Kyiv Municipal Blood Center revealed a 3.45% HCV+ prevalence in these "Работает" hosts. In the study here, we analyzed HCV (as well as cytomegalovirus [CMV]) prevalence among Chernobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) accident sufferers--cleanup workers, local residents, NPP workers, and convalescent patients--who suffered acute radiation syndrome (ARS) as a result of the 1986 accident, and individuals who had not been exposed to ionizing radiation (IR). Serological analyses of antibodies against each pathogen (vi

7Be, 210Pb and 137Cs concentrations in cloud water.

Cloud water was sampled during 8 months, in 2008 and 2009, at the puy de Dome high-altitude atmospheric research station (France). The concentrations of (7)Be and (210)Pb, both naturally occurring radionuclides, and (137)Cs of anthropogenic origin, were determined. Those values are useful for a better knowledge of the aftermath cloud deposition and more generally for wet deposition assessment of radionuclides. This is of primary interest in case of a nuclear accident, especially considering (137)Cs deposition, both for high-altitude locations that are regularly embedded by clouds and also for

Lymphoma, multiple myeloma and leukaemia incidence in regions of Belarus most heavily contaminated by the Chernobyl accident.

There is little information on non-thyroid cancer risks, including haematological malignancies (HM), among the residents of most contaminated regions after the Chernobyl (Chornobyl) nuclear power plant accident. We studied the incidence of lymphoma, multiple myeloma and leukaemia in relation to the raion-average age-specific cumulative absorbed red bone marrow (RBM) dose among the residents of Gomel and Mogilev oblasts in Belarus, which were highly contaminated. The follow-up period was 40 years (1978-2018). HM cases and population size data were received from the Belarusian national cancer re

Thyroid nodules after prenatal exposure to chernobyl radioactive fallout in Belarus.

PURPOSE: To assess the risk of thyroid nodules associated with prenatal radiation exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thyroid screening was conducted among 1,439 Belarusians who were prenatally exposed to radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear plant accident. Estimated thyroid doses (mean, 0.14; median, 0.02 gray [Gy]) were predominately from intake of 131I. Binary logistic regression models were used to estimate excess odds ratios (EORs) for thyroid nodules associated with radiation dose. RESULTS: A total of 258 screening participants had one or more nonneoplastic thyroid nodules. Amon

Prenatal irradiation-induced brain neuropathology and cognitive impairment.

Embryo/fetus is much more radiosensitive than neonatal and adult human being. The main potential effects of pre-natal radiation exposure on the human brain include growth retardation, small head/brain size, mental retardation, neocortical ectopias, callosal agenesis and brain tumor which may result in a lifetime poor quality of life. The patterns of prenatal radiation-induced effects are dependent not only on the stages of fetal development, the sensitivity of tissues and organs, but also on radiation sources, doses, dose rates. With the increased use of low dose radiation for diagnostic or ra

Individual thyroid dose estimates for a case-control study of chernobyl-related thyroid cancer among children of Belarus--part II. Contributions from long-lived radionuclides and external radiation.

Significant quantities of long-lived radionuclides were released to the environment during the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in 1986. These radionuclides contributed to radiation doses due to ingestion of contaminated foods and external exposure from the ground deposition that resulted. The contributions of these exposure pathways to thyroid doses received by subjects of an epidemiologic study of children from Belarus are evaluated and presented. The analysis shows that ingestion of the long-lived radionuclides, primarily radiocesium, typically contributed a small percentage of the to

Signatures of Radiation-Induced Stress and Putative Selection on Immune Targets in Chornobyl Wolves.

Investigating the physiological and evolutionary consequences of contaminant exposure in wild populations is critical for understanding long-term ecological impacts of anthropogenic change. However, how and why species persist, even thrive, in highly contaminated regions in the absence of humans remains a topic of much debate. We examined the regulatory and genomic impacts of multigenerational chronic radiation exposure to grey wolves (Canis lupus) within the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. Wolves within the exclusion zone are at an estimated seven times greater density than surrounding preserves, d

Exposure to the Thyroid from Intake of Radioiodine Isotopes after the Chornobyl Accident. Report I: Revised Doses and Associated Uncertainties for the Ukrainian-American Cohort.

Thyroid doses from intake of radioiodine isotopes (131I, 132Te+132I, and 133I) and associated uncertainties were revised for the 13,204 Ukrainian-American cohort members exposed in childhood and adolescence to fallout from the Chornobyl nuclear power plant accident. The main changes related to the revision of the 131I thyroid activity measured in cohort members, the use of thyroid-mass values specific to the Ukrainian population, and the revision of the 131I ground deposition densities in Ukraine. Uncertainties in doses were assessed considering shared and unshared errors in the parameters of

The infection of questing Dermacentor reticulatus ticks with Babesia canis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

Tick occurrence was studied in the Chernobyl exclusion zone (CEZ) during the August-October 2009-2012. Dermacentor reticulatus ticks were collected using the flagging method and then screened for infection with Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia canis by a PCR method incorporating specific primers and sequence analysis. The prevalence of infection with B. canis canis and A. phagocytophilum was found to be 3.41% and 25.36%, respectively. The results present the first evidence of B. canis canis and A. phagocytophilum in questing D. reticulatus ticks from the Chernobyl exclusion zone. They als
