Salicylic acid supplementation for broiler chickens under heat stress.

This review highlights some literature data on salicylic acid (SA) supplementation and its effects on heat-stressed broiler chickens. The current review will assess the potential use of supplemented SA and highlight its mode of action to decrease the adverse effects of heat stress on broiler production, including growth performance, animal health, gut microbiota, and heat-shock protein expression in broiler chickens. Dry matter intake, growth rate, and feed conversion ratio were improved for broilers when SA was added to their diet either in powder form or supplemented in their drinking water.…

Transmission investigation of Mycoplasma synoviae in Chinese indigenous chickens.

Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) induces avian synovitis, presenting with tendon inflammation, and respiratory distress, ultimately compromising poultry health and farm productivity. To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of MS in Chinese indigenous chickens, a comprehensive study was conducted on chicken flocks from three breeder farms in Jiangsu, China. A total of 113 batches of chicken flocks were screened using real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Among 3,284 choanal cleft swab samples collected from chickens aged 2 to over 25 weeks, 1,695 tested positive for MS. Notably, the MS…

Embryonic thermal manipulation improved early immunity in broiler chickens.

Immunity in chickens is age-dependent and develops gradually over time. The initial defense by the host is a crucial mechanism for combating microbial infections. Embryonic thermal manipulation (TM) represents a promising approach for sustainable broiler production. Our previous work provided significant insights into the effects of TM on embryonic thermotolerance, metabolism, growth performance, microbial diversity, and immunity. This follow-up study used a subset of hatchlings previously used in our TM-related studies. This study aims to investigate the effects of TM on immunity-related gene…

Pathology, viremia, apoptosis during MDV latency in vaccinated chickens.

Marek's disease, caused by herpes virus infection, is a highly contagious disease characterized by latent infection. Here, we aimed to study the pathology, viremia and apoptosis during the Marek's Disease Virus (MDV) latency in vaccinated chickens. Vaccinated chickens were inoculated with the MD5 strain and were dissected at different time points. The viremia occurs in the spleen and thymus during the latency period of MD5 infection, however, lesions can be observed in the liver tissue. The latency-associated early gene of MDV, i.e., ICP4, was highly expressed in the spleen and thymus during t…

Differences in innate fear behaviour in native Japanese chickens.

1. Comprehensive knowledge of innate fear in chickens has important implications for understanding the adaptation of native Japanese chickens in modern production and behavioural changes caused by modern breeding goals. Innate fear behaviour seen in chicks from six native Japanese chicken breeds;, Ingie (IG), Nagoya (NAG), Oh-Shamo (OSM), Tosa-Jidori (TJI), Tosa-Kukin (TKU) and Ukokkei (UK), were compared with those in two lines of White Leghorn (WL-G and WL-T) in tonic immobility (TI) and open field (OF) tests.2. TI and OF tests were conducted for 267 chicks at 0-1 days of age in the eight br…

Development of active jejunal glucose absorption in broiler chickens.

Growth in chickens, especially meat-type chickens (broilers), is extremely rapid, but studies on the regulatory mechanism of intestinal glucose absorption with growth are few, contradictory, and unclear. Here, we investigated the regulation of intestinal glucose absorption with growth in broiler chickens using oral glucose gavage, intestinal Evans blue transit, intestinal glucose absorption, scanning electron microscopy, and glucose absorption- and cell junction-related gene expression analyses. Peak blood glucose levels after oral glucose gavage occurred at 10 and 50 min in chickens at 1 wk (…

Effects of age on immune function in broiler chickens.

BACKGROUND: There are many diseases in poultry, many of which are caused by poor immune function. It is not clear how cytokines and various immune cell functions change with age in modern broilers. The purpose of this study was to explore the patterns of development of the immunity of the broiler chickens in cage. RESULTS: The results showed that there were 3 development patterns of immunity in the broiler chickens. The first pattern was Down-Up. Cytokines and some immune indicators first decreased and then increased, and the lowest levels of immunity basically occurred from d 6 to 13. The se…

Heat Stress Directly Affects Intestinal Integrity in Broiler Chickens.

A study using pair-feeding technique was conducted to determine whether heat exposure directly or indirectly (via reduced feed intake) increases intestinal mucosal damage and permeability to endotoxin in broiler chickens. Male broiler chickens (Ross 308), 27-d-old, were subjected to one of the three treatments (n=8): 1) thermo-neutral conditions (24°C) with ad libitum feed intake, 2) heat stress conditions (33°C) with ad libitum feed intake, or 3) pair-feeding under thermo-neutral conditions, with the feed intake identical to that of heat-stressed chickens. Using these groups, two experiments …

Interactions Between Parasites and the Bacterial Microbiota of Chickens.

Except for the important role coccidia have as predisposing factors of necrotic enteritis, the role parasites play in the dynamics of a healthy microbiota of chickens is not well explored. This review describes the interactions of relevant intestinal parasites of chickens with bacteria. Infection with Eimeria spp. favor the growth of Clostridium perfringens and suppress the growth of many other bacteria by increasing viscosity and passage time of the ingesta, and by causing lesions to the intestinal mucosa that improve the availability of nutrients for C. perfringens. Conversely, there are ind…

Susceptibility of chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) to Trichinella patagoniensis.

Trichinella spp. is a genus of parasites that is widespread all over the world. In Argentina, T. spiralis was for years the only species involved in human and animal outbreaks. During the last decade, T. patagoniensis, a new Trichinella species, was discovered in Argentina. Up to now, this species has only been found in cougars (Puma concolor). Experimental infections in pigs, cats, mice and rats with this new genotype showed that cats and mice were the most susceptible hosts. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the susceptibility of chickens to infection with T. patagoniensis. In orde…

Anticryptosporidial prophylactic efficacy of enrofloxacin and paromomycin in chickens.

Two battery tests were conducted to study the anticryptosporidial prophylactic efficacy of the 2 commercially available antibiotics, enrofloxacin and paromomycin. The efficacy of enrofloxacin was 52% at the recommended level, which could not be increased, using twice the recommended dose. At the recommended levels, paromomycin reduced the oocyst output of birds by 67-82%, showing the highest efficacy of all drugs tested against avian cryptosporidiosis thus far. Moreover, the patent period was shortened by 12-23%. The body weight gain of paromomycin-treated chickens was almost identical with th…
