Development of eating skills in infants and toddlers from a neuropediatric perspective.

Early infant feeding and swallowing are complex motor processes involving numerous muscles in coordination, e.g. the orofacial muscles as well as the muscles of the pharynx, larynx and esophagus. The newborn's reflexive drinking develops into the ability to ingest pureed complementary food as infancy progresses. Finally, in the last part of the first year of life, a differentiated eating, chewing and swallowing process develops allowing the voluntary intake of different foods of the family diet. The dietary schedule for the first year of life, which describes the recommended nutrition of infan

Congenital Upper Limb Deficiency with Oligodactyly: A Case Report.

UNLABELLED: Congenital upper limb deficiency care and management have undergone drastic changes over the past 50 years. Given the low incidence of this defect nationwide, this case report adds to the existing database to analyze the etiological investigations, descriptive epidemiology, and trend detection. We present a case of a 2-month-old male child with congenital upper limb deficiency and explore the possible etiologies and difficulties during early diagnosis of such rare disorders in a low and middle-income countrries and present implications at the primary health care level to improve th

[Epidemiological data on children hospitalized with malaria from 1983 to 1992].

Authors record the manifestations on the child of the severe malaria epidemic that raged in Antananarivo. Using the hospitalisation registers of the Debré room, Pediatric Service "A", at the Hospital of Befelatanana as source documents, they underline some points: Concerning morbidity, the epidemic started in 1984, reached its highest point in 1988 (26.7%, of in patients) and began to fade away in 1992. Boys and girls were equally affected, with a majority among children of 5 years old and more (51 to 58% of cases). All patients came from the center of Antananarivo (33.5%) or mainly from the s

Dysphagia in children: a paediatric surgical perspective.

Dysphagia in childhood encompasses all disorders of swallowing. The patient groups seen frequently in paediatric surgical practice are those with repaired oesophageal atresia, some patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and those with neurological impairment. Oesophageal atresia patients frequently experience dysphagia that is most troublesome in early childhood, fortunately for most the long-term outlook is good. Gastro-oesophageal reflux may give rise to dysphagia as a result of peptic structure, dysmotility associated with oesophagitis or as a complication of anti-reflux surgery. C

[Iatrogenic acrodermatitis enteropathica-like syndrome in leucinosis].

INTRODUCTION: Leucinosis (maple syrup urine disease) is a metabolic disorder caused by an enzymatic deficiency involved in the degradative pathways of the three branched-chain amino acids. We report an observation of acrodermatitis enteropathica-like syndrome induced by essential amino acid deficiency in a child with leucinosis. CASE REPORT: A child with leucinosis was referred to our hospital for exfoliative dermatitis of the perioral and anogenital regions associated with diarrhea and pancytopenia. The diagnosis of iatrogenic acrodermatitis enteropathica-like syndrome was confirmed after sc

Assessing Nutritional Risk Among Infants and Toddlers in Primary Care Practice.

Traditionally, nutritional risk has been defined by growth failure, with clinical intervention indicated when a child falls below the third to fifth percentile on growth charts. Although the velocity of linear growth and weight gain during the first years are unparalleled at any other time of life, this period is also unique for other reasons. Nutrition not only supports increased bone length, muscle mass, and tissue growth, but also continued development of several highly metabolic organs such as the gastrointestinal tract, the immune system, the cardiorespiratory system, the kidneys, and the

Scurvy in the Modern Era: Revisiting a Forgotten Diagnosis in a Child With Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis.

Scurvy, an ancient disease caused by severe vitamin C deficiency, continues to resurface in modern settings, especially among patients with selective eating habits due to developmental disorders, feeding difficulties, or low socioeconomic status. This report describes the case of a three-year-old child who presented with five weeks' history of multisystemic symptoms, such as systemic (fever, generalized edema), musculoskeletal (bone pain), dermatological (petechiae), and mucosal (gingivitis), leading to a diagnostic dilemma. The patient underwent extensive workups, including biopsies and infec

Effect of a Low-Glycemic Index Nutritional Intervention on Body Weight and Selected Cardiometabolic Parameters in Children and Adolescents with Excess Body Weight and Dyslipidemia.

Excess body weight in pediatric patients and the resulting dyslipidemia, if left untreated, are a serious risk factor for cardiovascular disease in young adults. Despite this, there is still no effective and validated nutritional strategy for the treatment of overweight/obesity and comorbid dyslipidemia in children and adolescents. A low-glycemic index (LGI) diet may be recommended, but evidence for its effectiveness in the pediatric population is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of nutritional intervention in children and adolescents with excess body weight and

Effect of nutritional status on responses to therapy.

The evidence for the effect of nutritional status on outcome is reviewed. It is concluded that poor nutritional status, is reversible, whether therapy is given or not, and that initial malnutrition presages poor outcome. However, reversal of the nutritional state does not affect outcome unless the antineoplastic therapy is inherently effective.

Overview of pediatric short bowel syndrome.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a malabsorptive state occuring as a result of surgical resection or congenital disease of a significant portion of the small intestine . The amount of resection or remaining bowel generally dictates the degree of malabsorption and consequentely the need for specialized enteral nutrition or parenteral nutrition (PN). Intestinal failure in the context of SBS is defined as a dependence on PN to maintain minimal energy and fluid requirement for growth in children. Common causes of SBS in infants and children include necrotizing enterocolitis, midgut volvulus, intestin

[Nutritional treatment in childhood Crohn's disease].

Growth retardation and delay in sexual maturation are the major complications of child-onset Crohn's disease (CD). Nutritional assessment and monitoring should comprise: weight and height measurement with calculation of respective velocities (growth velocity should be > or = 4-5 cm/year during the prepubertal period); pubertal staging; dietetic evaluation; laboratory analysis for mineral, vitamin and trace element deficiencies; bone age. At diagnosis, weight loss and growth delay are present in 80-90% and 1/3 of cases, respectively. In case of an acute flare-up in a CD child with normal nutrit

Adductor muscle thickness of the thumb: A new and reliable parameter for nutritional assessment of pediatric inpatients.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The adductor pollicis muscle thickness (APMT) is a promising method for evaluation of muscle loss and, consequently, malnutrition in adult and elderly patients. However, to date, there have been no studies of its applicability to the pediatric population. Within this context, we sought to evaluate the association of APMT with anthropometric variables, body mass index (BMI), pediatric Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) of nutrition, nutritional screening, and clinical outcomes in hospitalized pediatric patients. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of inpatients aged 4-
