[The dentist's role in the child abuse: diagnosis and report].

Child Abuse is a frequent problem worldwide that surpasses ethnicity, religion, culture, economic and social classes. In the United States of America child protective services account, per year, over one million cases of child abuse or neglect. In Portugal, the incidence of the problem is unknown but each year thousands of abused children are accompanied by the Commissions for the Protection of Children and Youth at Risk. This abuse threatens children's physical, emotional and intellectual development, as well as their dignity, security, well-being and even their own lives. The body regions mo…

Socioeconomic risk and the longitudinal child lifetime prevalence of child protection involvement.

BACKGROUND: North American studies find that geographic indicators of disadvantage, such as concentrated poverty, significantly increase the risk of child protection involvement. Despite having one of the most extensive family support systems and progressive income redistribution policies in North America, the Canadian province of Québec still faces geographic variations in socioeconomic conditions that remain a major risk factor for child protection involvement. OBJECTIVE: This study asks how child protection involvement is distributed across socioeconomically distinct geographic areas of th

Toward a treatment-relevant typology of child abuse families.

Six types of physical maltreatment of children emerged during a 12-year period of a specialized physical abuse protective services program in Dallas, Texas. Criteria for identification of each type and recommendations for case management and treatment are presented in this paper. The typology is a broad framework; overlapping may occur in some instances. It is used as a means of differentiating between milder and more severe forms of physical child abuse.

A Multisystemic Approach to the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect.

Families experiencing physical abuse and/or neglect are at risk of continued difficulties that may involve long-term monitoring by Child Protective Services (CPS) and perhaps even removal of the child. Interventions needed to help the family remain intact safely and reduce both the clinical challenges they are experiencing and risk of further maltreatment will need to meet the multiple needs of all family members and involve a positive, collaborative working relationship with CPS. If services that are typically provided at outpatient clinics are used, the CPS case worker may be tasked with lin…

Vicarious traumatization among child welfare and child protection professionals: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Many individuals and organizations experience vicarious trauma, defined as exposure to traumatic experiences of others. Those who work with children traumatized by abuse and/or neglect, including, but not limited to, child welfare, child protection, counselors, healthcare providers, advocates, law enforcement, and prosecutors investigating crimes against children, are exposed to traumatic stories daily in their work. Negative reactions to this witnessing of other people's trauma results in vicarious traumatization (also referred to as secondary traumatic stress) which can manifest

Meeting housing needs of child welfare-involved families: Policy insights from simulation modeling.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate housing contributes to the risk of family separation in nearly one-quarter of child maltreatment investigations. Child welfare struggles to identify and address the demand for housing assistance. A range of housing interventions shows promise for stabilizing families. Still, aid remains difficult to access, and little evidence exists for prioritizing households to interventions. Inefficient decisions about who to serve with scarce housing resources threaten to diminish resources and unintentionally place children at greater risk. OBJECTIVE: The present study leverages c

Child sexual abuse and exploitation-A global glimpse.

The view of what constitutes child abuse and neglect is dependent on the laws, cultural context, local thresholds and the availability. Since 1982, the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) has conducted surveillance of child maltreatment and child protection every two years, published in World Perspectives on Child Abuse. It is hoped that up to date information will inform the development of laws, policies and programs to better address child abuse and neglect. This article is based on data on child sexual abuse and exploitation from 73 countries gathere

Preventing skin cancer: findings of the Task Force on Community Preventive Services On reducing Exposure to Ultraviolet Light.

Rates of skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States, are increasing. The most preventable risk factor for skin cancer is unprotected ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Seeking to identify effective approaches to reducing the incidence of skin cancer by improving individual and community efforts to reduce unprotected UV exposure, the Task Force on Community Preventive Services conducted systematic reviews of community interventions to reduce exposure to ultraviolet light and increase protective behaviors. The Task Force found sufficient evidence to recommend two interventions that are bas

Preventing early child maltreatment: implications from a longitudinal study of maternal abuse history, substance use problems, and offspring victimization.

In the interest of improving child maltreatment prevention science, this longitudinal, community based study of 499 mothers and their infants tested the hypothesis that mothers' childhood history of maltreatment would predict maternal substance use problems, which in turn would predict offspring victimization. Mothers (35% White/non-Latina, 34% Black/non-Latina, 23% Latina, 7% other) were recruited and interviewed during pregnancy, and child protective services records were reviewed for the presence of the participants' target infants between birth and age 26 months. The importance of resources and information in the lives of battered mothers.

An increasing body of research has documented the overlap between intimate partner violence and child abuse. To date, very little research has explored mothers' perspectives on how child protection services (CPS) actually investigates and intervenes in families where intimate partner violence (IPV) as well as child abuse or neglect have occurred. The current research explores the complex role of information and resources in child protection investigations and interventions. In-person interviews were conducted with 19 mothers who had been battered and who had been involved with CPS because of t

Education rights and the special needs child.

A child with a disability has a federally protected right to special education and related services when he or she needs them to benefit from education. The term "disability" is not limited to physical disability but rather includes mental disability, including mental retardation, serious emotional disturbance, autism, traumatic brain injury, specific learning disabilities, and other health impairments. A parent may request that a child be evaluated by the school district for special education and related services. The law sets forth specific guidelines for the evaluation, assessment, and elig
