Chlamydia comprises a diverse group of obligate intracellular bacteria that cause infections in animals, including humans. These organisms share fascinating biology, including distinct developmental stages, non-canonical cell surface structures, and adaptations to intracellular parasitism. Chlamydia trachomatis is of particular interest due to its significant clinical importance, causing both ocular and sexually transmitted infections. The strain L2/434/Bu, responsible for lymphogranuloma venereum, is the most common strain used to study chlamydial molecular and cell biology because it grows r…

Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is an obligate intracellular, Gram-negative bacterium that causes a variety of infections in both humans and animals. It is the causative agent of one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) with sequelae such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. Furthermore, Chlamydia infections have been epidemiologically linked to cervical cancer (CC) in patients with human papillomavirus (HPV) coinfection. However, a molecular mechanism linking Chlamydia to CC is yet to be established, and we still do not know if more aggressive di…

OBJECTIVE: To present a case series of 3 post-pubertal adolescent males with Chlamydia trachomatis presenting as scrotal masses. Scrotal masses are worrisome for malignancy, especially when imaging confirms intratesticular lesions. However, there are benign conditions which may mimic testicular cancer. Some of these conditions may not be readily considered in the pediatric population. This phenomenon is rare in the pediatric population, and this represents only the second report in the literature of this finding.
METHODS: Three cases of adolescent males who presented with a scrotal mass were …

Chlamydia trachomatis is a bacterial obligate intracellular parasite and a significant cause of human disease, including sexually transmitted infections and trachoma. The bacterial RNA polymerase-binding protein DksA is a transcription factor integral to the multicomponent bacterial stress response pathway known as the stringent response. The genome of C. trachomatis encodes a DksA ortholog (DksACt) that is maximally expressed at 15-20 h post infection, a time frame correlating with the onset of transition between the replicative reticulate body (RB) and infectious elementary body (EB) forms o…

We report 2 cases of neovaginal Chlamydia trachomatis infection in transgender women who underwent penile-inversion vaginoplasty procedures with integrated peritoneum and urethral grafts. These tissue types may have facilitated C. trachomatis infection. Medical providers should implement neovaginal screening for bacterial sexually transmitted infections in transgender patients at risk for infection.

Chlamydia trachomatis is an important human pathogen. This obligate intracellular bacterium grows inside the eukaryotic cell in a membrane-bound compartment, the inclusion. Recent global approaches describe the interactions of C. trachomatis with its host cell and indicate the inclusion is an intracellular trafficking hub embedded into the cellular vesicular trafficking pathways recruiting subunits of the retromer protein complex of the host cell. Here we review these recent developments in deciphering Chlamydia-host cell interactions with emphasis on the role of the retromer complex.

Infectious endocervicitis is a common disease in women of reproductive age. Itis of great clinical importance because the infection can spread over the genital tract and it can transfer both in horisontal way (sexual partner) and vertical way (foetus and new-bom). One of the most common causers for the infections endocervicitis is Chlamydia trachomatis. The aim of the study was to define the frequency of the chlamydial endocervicitis among women with desired pregnancy and examining them while pregnant and until the birth to define the possible complications.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most prevalent cause of sexually transmitted bacterial infections worldwide, with more than 100 million estimated cases annually. This obligate intracellular pathogen is known to cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and chronic infections resulting in tubal factor infertility and ectopic pregnancy. However, the majority of the infections remains asymptomatic and thus untreated. For this reason, the ultimate goal for the prevention C. trachomatis infections is an effective vaccine. Here we review the major challenges and the different strategies associated with t…

The neglected tropical disease (NTD) trachoma is currently the leading cause of eye disease in the world, and the pathogenic bacteria causing this condition, Chlamydia trachomatis, is also the most common sexually transmitted pathogenic bacterium. Although the serovars of this bacterial species typically vary between ocular and genital infections there is a clear connection between genital C. trachomatis infections and the development of trachoma in infants, such that the solutions to these infections are closely related. It is the unique life cycle of the C. trachomatis bacteria which primari…

While true antimicrobial resistance to Chlamydia trachomatis is a rare occurrence, repeat chlamydia infections continue to be reported following treatment with a single 1 g dose of azithromycin or week long doxycycline - with considerable more concern about azithromycin treatment failure. While most repeat positive cases are likely to be reinfections, emerging evidence indicates treatment failure may play a role. Current data suggests that there may are differences in the efficacy of the drugs between rectal and non-rectal sites of infection and factors such as immune response, drug pharmacoki…

Chlamydiae are microorganisms exhibiting characteristics intermediate between bacteria and viruses. Chlamydia is widespread in the natural world, intracellular parasites of people and animals. They are capable of independent reproduction, because they do not synthesize ATP, in its development cycle using the host cell metabolic pathways. The life cycle of these microorganisms is original, unique among bacteria and lasts from 24 to 48 hours. Chlamydia antigens consist of 4 groups: group-specific, species-specific, type-specific and subspecies-specific. The group of species-specific antigens con

BACKGROUND: Melasma is an acquired photosensitive hypermelanosis in sun-exposed areas, especially seen in females. The exact cause of this disorder is not known. Association of melasma with chronic pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) has been described earlier. Chlamydia trachomatis is an important etilogical agent in acute and chronic PID and photosensitivity has been described in almost 50% cases of chronic lymphogranuloma venereum caused by 1.1, 1.2 and 13 serovars of C. trachomatis.
METHOD: Blood of 38 cases of melasma in women and 31 healthy females was tested for the presence of C. tracho…
