LDL-Cholesterol-Lowering Effects of a Dietary Supplement Containing Onion and Garlic Extract Used in Healthy Volunteers.

Hypercholesterolemia plays a pivotal role in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases, and its prevention seems to be a crucial healthcare strategy to ameliorate these conditions. Subjects with mild hypercholesterolemia are frequently advised against using cholesterol-lowering drugs due to potential side effects, with an emphasis instead on prioritizing dietary adjustments and lifestyle modifications as the primary strategy. In this context, the use of dietary supplements based on medicinal plants may be recommended as a complementary approach to managing elevated cholesterol

Assessment of three equations to calculate plasma LDL cholesterol concentration in fasting and non-fasting hypertriglyceridemic patients.

OBJECTIVES: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentration was calculated for many years using the Friedewald equation, but those from Sampson and extended-Martin-Hopkins perform differently. Their accuracy in fasting hypertriglyceridemia and non-fasting state were compared and the clinical impact of implementing these equations on risk classification and on the setting of lipid treatment goals was assessed. METHODS: Seven thousand six standard lipid profiles and LDL-C concentrations measured after ultracentrifugation (uLDL-C) were retrospectively included. uLDL-C were compared to

Differential association between apolipoprotein B and LDL cholesterol and cerebral atherosclerosis according to pre-stroke statin use.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To reduce cardiovascular risk, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is the primary target of statin treatment, while apolipoprotein B (ApoB) is secondary. We investigated the association between atherosclerotic stenosis and LDL-C or ApoB levels and whether a difference in association exists according to pre-admission statin use in ischemic stroke patients. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack who underwent lipid profile and angiographic testing. Patients were categori

Increased Adipose Tissue Expression of IL-23 Associates with Inflammatory Markers in People with High LDL Cholesterol.

Chronic low-grade inflammation induced by obesity is a central risk factor for the development of metabolic syndrome. High low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) induces inflammation, which is a common denominator in metabolic syndrome. IL-23 plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of meta-inflammatory diseases; however, its relationship with LDL-c remains elusive. In this cross-sectional study, we determined whether the adipose tissue IL-23 expression was associated with other inflammatory mediators in people with increased plasma LDL-c concentrations. Subcutaneous adipose tissue bi

Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol as a Causal Role for Atherosclerotic Disease: Potential Role of PCSK9 Inhibitors.

Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9)-related discoveries of the turn of the century have translated into substantial novelty in dyslipidemia treatment in the last 5 years. With chronic preventable atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) representing an epidemic of morbidity and mortality worldwide, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) reduction represents a public health priority. By overcoming two major statin-related issues, namely intolerance and ineffectiveness, PCSK9 inhibitors have offered a safe and effective option in selected clinical settings where LDL

Increase of electronegative-LDL-fraction ratio and IDL-cholesterol in chronic kidney disease patients with hemodialysis treatment.

BACKGROUND: It is known that the increased level of IDL and oxidized LDL are associated with risk of cardiovascular disease, and the lipoprotein abnormalities accelerate atherosclerosis. Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of mortality in chronic kidney disease patients with hemodialysis treatment (HD-Ps). Therefore, the estimation of lipoprotein profiles is important for prevention of cardiovascular disease in HD-Ps. We previously established an anion-exchange chromatographic method for measurement of cholesterol level in subclasses of HDL and LDL, IDL, VLDL, and chylomicron. An electrone

The relationship between updated Sydney System score and LDL cholesterol levels in patients infected with Helicobacter pylori.

OBJECTIVES: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) chronically infects the human stomach and may cause extra-gastrointestinal diseases. The role of H. pylori in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and its effect on lipids remains controversial. The aim of this study was to examine lipid levels in patients with and without H. pylori infection. METHODS: A total of 244 consecutive patients who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy were included in this study. Patients receiving statin and fibrate therapy and diabetic patients were excluded. Biopsies from each individual were taken and analyzed for H. py

Association of small dense LDL cholesterol and inflammation with plaque rupture in acute coronary syndrome: An OCT study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Plaque rupture (PR) is the predominant cause of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (sd-LDL-C) shows a greater association with cardiovascular event risk than LDL-C. To better understand the contributions of atherogenic lipids and systemic inflammation, we investigated the association of sd-LDL-C and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) with PR in patients with ACS. METHODS: We enrolled 315 consecutive patients with ACS who underwent optical coherence tomography-guided emergency percutaneous coronary intervention. Cu

Oral Semaglutide Further Reduced LDL Cholesterol in a Patient with Familial Hypercholesterolemia Treated with Statins, Ezetimibe, and Evolocumab.

We present the case of a woman with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia with a history of myocardial infarction at 53 years of age. Her initial low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level was 312 mg/dL, which was reduced to ~50 mg/dL using statins, ezetimibe, and evolocumab. However, the patient also had diabetes, and its management gradually worsened. We introduced oral semaglutide, which contributed not only to the good management of diabetes, but also to the further reduction of LDL cholesterol in addition to intensive LDL-lowering therapies, including statins, ezetimibe, and evo

Position of the Polish Cardiac Society on therapeutic targets for LDL cholesterol concentrations in secondary prevention of myocardial infarctions.

Cardiovascular diseases account for 43% of deaths in Poland. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the number of cardiovascular deaths by as much as 16.7%. Lipid metabolism disorders are observed in about 20 million Poles. Lipid disorders are usually asymptomatic, they cause a significant increase in the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Up to 20% of patients who experience an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) may experience a recurrence of a cardiovascular event within a year, and up to 40% of these patients may be re-hospitalized. Within 5 years after a myocardial infarction, 18% of patients suffer a s

Insurance, self-reported medication adherence and LDL cholesterol: The REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke study.

BACKGROUND: Lack of health insurance may adversely impact medication adherence and the control of cardiovascular risk factors. We examined if the association between insurance and LDL-C is due to self-reported low medication adherence. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 8685 black and white men and women aged 45 and older who participated in the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) cohort and used statins. Medication adherence was assessed using the 4-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-4). Mean differences in LDL-C between participants with an

Impact of Evolocumab on LDL-Cholesterol and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients With Established CVD: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, and many high-risk patients fail to reach LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) targets on statins alone. Evolocumab, a PCSK9 inhibitor, offers potent LDL-C lowering, but a synthesis of its lipid and clinical benefits in secondary prevention is needed. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials evaluating evolocumab in adults with established cardiovascular disease. PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched through April 2025

When bad turns good: a systematic review on cholesterol and LDL in longitudinal patient cohorts with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: While the aetiology of Parkinson's disease (PD) involves genetic and environmental factors, emerging evidence has suggested a surprising link between lipid metabolism - particularly serum total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) - and the pathogenesis of PD. Cholesterol plays a vital role in neuronal membrane integrity, myelination, and synaptic function. However, its peripheral concentration and regulatory mechanisms in the central nervous system (CNS), remain incompletely understood in the context of PD. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to systematically

Genetic evidence supports the combined targeting of lipoprotein(a) and LDL cholesterol to reduce coronary artery disease risk.

Distinct genetic mechanisms govern how lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) promote atherosclerosis. It remains unclear whether targeting both provides additive cardiovascular benefits. Here we use coding loss-of-function variants in LPA and PCSK9 and genetic scores associated with Lp(a) and LDL-C levels to evaluate the effects of lowering Lp(a) and LDL-C on coronary artery disease (CAD) risk. Among 408,039 individuals from the UK Biobank, LPA or PCSK9 loss-of-function carriers have lower CAD risk than noncarriers (odds ratio (OR) 0.91 and 0.81). Carriers of b

LDL-cholesterol lowering agents (statins and PCSK9 inhibitors) and the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage: A network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Statin therapy reduces the risk of ischemic stroke; however, certain studies have observed an increased incidence of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Moreover, proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9(PCSK-9) inhibitors have emerged as a powerful class of lipid-lowering medications, potentially with a lower propensity for causing hemorrhagic events. To investigate this matter further, we conducted a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving statins and PCSK-9 inhibitors that reported occurrences of ICH. METHODS: We performed a literatur

Self-medication to lower LDL cholesterol and to treat statin-associated muscle symptoms in patients with statin intolerance.

BACKGROUND: Self-medication with supplements or over-the-counter drugs is very frequent despite limited evidence on efficacy and safety. Patients with statin intolerance (SI) may be prone to self-medication to lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and to treat statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use and predictors of self-medication in the prospective, multicenter Statin Intolerance Registry at baseline. METHODS AND RESULTS: Among 1111 patients (mean age 66.1 [9.9] years, 57.7% female), 67.2% reported use of self-medication to lower LDL-C (43.8%,
