BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, the frequency of serum chromium deficiency in patients awaiting bariatric surgery has not been determined. This study was designed to assess chromium concentration and its association with glycemic levels and lipid profile in patients prior to bariatric surgery.
METHODS: This study recruited 73 candidates for bariatric surgery between March and September 2012. Their sociodemographic, anthropometric, and biochemical data were collected.

The authors studied immune homeostasis parameters in chromium production workers and presented changes in cellular, humoral immunity and sensibilization to chromium in main occupational groups of workers. Findings are that occupational contact with chromium compounds results in T-immune deficiency. Allergic tests also revealed higher sensibilization to 6-valent chromium.

Nanocrystalline chromiuim nitride has been synthesised by direct gas phase nitridation of nanocrystalline chromia at 1100 degrees C in ammonia-atmosphere. Female mice received 250, 500 or 750 ppm chromium (VI) as potassium dichromate in drinking water on days 14 to 19 of pregnancy. Gestational weight gain of mothers, fetal weight and crown-rump length decreased in the 500 and 750 ppm groups. The high-dose group also had significantly higher incidences of postimplantation loss. Chromium(VI) reductase activity was measured in ultrafiltrates of rat lung after various pretreatments in vitro at 37 degrees C and pH 7.0. Pretreatment of ultrafiltrates with L-ascorbate oxidase (EC 1.10.3.3), which specifically eliminated ascorbate, blocked approximately 95% of chromium(VI) reductase activity in ultrafiltrates. Using personal air sampling exposure to hexavalent and trivalent chromium was measured in 22 workers mainly exposed to Cr(VI) and in 15 workers mainly exposed to Cr(III) as basic chromium sulphate.
