Comparative pathogenicity and histopathological analysis of Edwardsiella anguillarum intraperitoneal infection in milkfish (Chanos chanos), Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer).

Edwardsiella anguillarum, a highly virulent species within the Edwardsiella genus, causes significant mortality in milkfish farms in Taiwan. This study aimed to investigate the comparison of milkfish susceptibility, a newly identified host species in Taiwanese aquaculture, with other species Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer), to E. anguillarum, elucidating its pathogenicity across both seawater and freshwater aquaculture environments. The results showed milkfish exhibited the highest mortality rate of 85% within 48 h of infection, whereas Nile tilapia ex

Performance of collagen-based matrices from Nile tilapia skin: A pilot proteomic study in a murine model of wound healing.

Full-thickness cutaneous trauma, due to the lack of dermis, leads to difficulty in epithelialization by keratinocytes, developing a fibrotic scar, with less elasticity than the original skin, which may have disorders in predisposed individuals, resulting in hypertrophic scar and keloids. Biomedical materials have excellent characteristics, such as good biocompatibility and low immunogenicity, which can temporarily replace traditional materials used as primary dressings. In this work, we developed two dermal matrices based on Nile tilapia collagen, with (M_GAG) and without (M) glycosaminoglycan

Development of a bivalent mucoadhesive nanovaccine to prevent francisellosis and columnaris diseases in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

The occurrence of francisellosis caused by Francisella orientalis sp. nov. (Fo) and columnaris disease caused by Flavobacterium oreochromis (For) is negatively impacting Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) production, especially when high stocking densities are used. A new and innovative bivalent mucoadhesive nanovaccine was developed in this study for immersion vaccination of tilapia against francisellosis and columnaris disease. It was shown to have the potential to improve both innate and adaptive immunity in vaccinated Nile tilapia. It increased innate immune parameters, such as lysozyme

Genetic characterization and antimicrobial profiling of bacterial isolates collected from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) affected by summer mortality syndrome.

In recent years, Egyptian tilapia aquaculture has experienced mortality episodes during the summer months. The causative agents responsible for such mortalities have not been clearly identified. A total of 400 fish specimens were collected from affected tilapia farms within five Egyptian governorates. A total of 344 bacterial isolates were identified from the examined fish specimens. Bacterial isolates were grouped into seven genera based on API 20E results. The most prevalent pathogens were Aeromonas spp. (42%), Vibrio spp. (21%), and Streptococcus agalactiae (14.5%). Other emerging infection

Fipronil impairs the GABAergic brain responses of Nile Tilapia during the transition from normoxia to acute hypoxia.

γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is one of the main neurotransmitters involved in the adaptation processes against the damage that hypoxia can cause to the brain. Due to its antagonist action on GABA receptors, the insecticide fipronil can turn the fish more susceptible to the negative effects of hypoxia. This study aimed to understand better if fipronil affects these GABAergic responses of Tilapia ahead to hypoxia. Oreochromis Niloticus (Nile Tilapia) were exposed for 3 and 8 h to fipronil (0.0, 0.1, and 0.5 µg.L-1 ) under normoxia (dissolved O2  > 6 mg.L-1 ) and moderate hypoxia (dissolved O2  < 2

Expression and purification of S5196-272 and S6200-317 proteins from Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV) and their potential use as vaccines.

Tilapia Lake Virus Disease (TiLVD) is caused by Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV), and it has a cumulative mortality rate of up to 90% in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). TiLV is a negative enveloped single-stranded RNA virus with 10 genomic segments. Segment 5 (S5) and segment 6 (S6) were predicted to include a signaling peptide, suggesting that the encoded proteins of these two segments may exist as part of the virus envelope. Based on bioinformatic predictions, the S5 and S6 proteins in this study were produced, including S527-343, S527-172, S5196-272, S630-317, S630-190, and S6200-317. All pr

Poikilocytosis and tissue damage as negative impacts of tramadol on juvenile of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Pharmaceuticals residue was detected in the water bodies as a consequence of the incomplete treatment. Recently, the side impacts of that residue on aquatic creatures have received a considerable attention. However, there is insufficient information about the effect of the most consumed narcotic drug (tramadol) on fish as an aquatic model. Thus, this study aims at investigating the poikilocytosis and tissue damage in Oreochromis niloticus after the exposure to 100 and 200 mg/L of tramadol hydrochloride. Three groups of fish were used; one as a control group, and the other two groups were expos

A novel microhabitat for parasitic copepods: a new genus of Ergasilidae (Copepoda: Cyclopoida) from the urinary bladder of a freshwater fish.

An endoparasitic copepod is reported from the urinary bladder of a fish for the first time. Endoparasitic copepods on fish hosts are extremely rare and the impact of colonization of this novel microhabitat on the biology of the parasite is discussed. This curious association was reported from two different host families of Neotropical freshwater fishes, Erythrinidae and Cichlidae, collected from the Cristalino River, a tributary of the Araguaia River, in Brazil. The copepod is fully described using light and scanning electron microscopy. Urogasilus brasiliensis n. g., n. sp. represents a new g

Evolution of ligand specificity in vertebrate corticosteroid receptors.

BACKGROUND: Corticosteroid receptors include mineralocorticoid (MR) and glucocorticoid (GR) receptors. Teleost fishes have a single MR and duplicate GRs that show variable sensitivities to mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids. How these receptors compare functionally to tetrapod MR and GR, and the evolutionary significance of maintaining two GRs, remains unclear. RESULTS: We used up to seven steroids (including aldosterone, cortisol and 11-deoxycorticosterone [DOC]) to compare the ligand specificity of the ligand binding domains of corticosteroid receptors between a mammal (Mus musculus) an
