An 81-year-old man was examined on referral with the presenting complaint of decreased vision in one eye. Tentative diagnosis, later confirmed by pathology evaluation, was malignant melanoma of the ciliary body.

Electron microscopic observation of a mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body, in which clear perinuclear halos were present, revealed the ultrastructural characteristics of smooth muscle cells, which include myofilaments with fusiform densities, dense attachments, external lamina, and pinocytotic vesicles. This is our first case of malignant melanoma of the ciliary body treated with proton beam irradiation, a technique that we developed for irradiating choroidal melanomas. After 21 months of follow-up no growth of the tumour has been observed, and shrinkage of the tumour was noted on the follow-up photographs and by ultrasonography. A ciliary body tumor that was believed clinically to be a malignant melanoma developed in a 28-year-old woman and led to enucleation of her eye. The light microscopic appearance of the tumor was interpreted by light microscopy as a neurogenic neoplasm, possibly a choristomatous astrocytoma. Electron microscopic studies disclosed the smooth muscle origin of the tumor. BACKGROUND: To describe the correlation between standardized A-scan echography and histopathology in a ciliary body melanocytoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a large ciliary body melanocytoma with significant growth, vision loss, and elevated intraocular pressure that was diagnosed clinically as a melanoma, but the standardized A-scan findings correlated to the histopathological description of a melanocytoma with multiple pseudocysts.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the iris and ciliary body is extremely rare. We present a case which was misdiagnosed as granulomatous uveitis with neovascular glaucoma, and underwent a trabeculectomy with mitomycin-c along with iris biopsy. The post-operative period showed early bleb failure and catastrophic growth of the suspected mass. Histopathological examination revealed a diagnosis iris plasmacytoma. A 12-year-old girl with malignant ciliary medulloepithelioma and parotid metastasis was treated with semi-exenteration of the orbit and external beam radiotherapy. She had brain metastasis 7 months later and was treated with salvage chemotherapy. The patient was disease free at 11 months of follow-up. In aggressive cases, exenteration combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy are necessary for disease control. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2017;54:e18-e22].

We report on a typical case of a ciliary body melanoma in a 59-year-old female, which was only noticed due to nonspecific unilateral vision disorders and which could only be seen in maximal mydriasis via a gonioscopic three-mirror lens. We further discuss tumor monitoring via ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and execution and prognosis of Ru-106 brachytherapy.

Pax6 is a highly conserved transcription factor that controls the morphogenesis of various organs. Changes in Pax6 dosage have been shown to affect the formation of multiple tissues. PAX6 haploinsufficiency leads to aniridia, a pan-ocular disease primarily characterized by iris hypoplasia.
