The Burden of Witnessing: The Impact of Vicarious Experiences of Racism & Anti-Immigrant Discrimination on Healthcare Utilization.

Experiencing racism and anti-immigrant discrimination has a negative impact on health, including healthcare utilization. A growing body of research has connected vicarious experiences of racism and anti-immigrant discrimination to health decline; however, there is a dearth of literature examining the impact of these vicarious experiences on healthcare utilization. Using data from the 2023 and 2024 California Health Interview Survey (n = 46,481), we examined the association between vicarious experiences of hate incidents in the last 12 months motivated by race or skin color and immigration stat

Habilitation and assistive devices for persons with disabilities: a new approach to respect for human rights and inclusion.

In recent years, the development of assistive technologies has profoundly changed the idea of what it means to be human and what humans are capable of, in particular for persons with disabilities; the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) highlights that disability is a social construction. New concepts have been developed, such as empowerment, enabling, inclusion, habilitation, and human rights, that have changed the meaning of making tools available to encourage full participation, hoping to solve challenges of today, such as barriers, obstacles, and d

A scoping review of gendered barriers and facilitators of access and use of assistive technology.

PURPOSE: A disparity exists in the access and use of assistive technology (AT), with women exhibiting lower rates of access compared to men, despite a higher reported prevalence of disability. To address these gendered inequities in AT, a comprehensive understanding of the influence of sex and gender on AT utilisation, access pathways, and associated perceptions is crucial. METHODS: This scoping review aimed to synthesise existing evidence concerning how sex and gender affect access, use, and attitudes towards AT. A systematic search across seven databases yielded 120 relevant publications.

Experiences and consequences of living with ongoing conflict: Arab-Palestinian adolescents in Israel during the war that began on October 7.

Adolescence is a critical period of personal and social development, particularly for Arab-Palestinian adolescents in Israel, whose lives are shaped by persistent political conflict and marginalization, this period becomes particularly challenging. The war that began on October 7, 2023 intensified these challenges, exposing adolescents to increased violence, fear, and social instability. This qualitative study investigated the impact of the October 7 war on Arab-Palestinian adolescents in Israel based on six focus groups involving 34 participants aged 12-18. The findings reveal two central the

Peer-delivered point-of-care testing and linkage to treatment for hepatitis C virus infection among marginalized populations through a mobile clinic in Copenhagen, Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Globally, many people with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection are marginalized and have very limited access to traditional healthcare services, including HCV testing and treatment. Models of care attuned to the needs of the marginalized population at risk are needed. This study aimed to evaluate the testing and treatment uptake of a community-based, peer-led model of care offering point-of-care testing. METHODS: In this interventional cohort study, people at risk of HCV infection were recruited between May 2019 and December 2021 at a community-based, peer-led mobile clinic. During

Examining Cybersexism in Online Gaming Communities: A Scoping Review.

Cybersexism in the context of online gaming communities, as epitomized by the Gamergate incident back in 2014, has been an issue for a while for gamer women, yet it has not received proper attention. In this scoping review, we have aimed to assess its main characteristics, its consequences for gamer women, its triggers and predictors, and related prevention and mitigation policies provided by the existing research. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines were applied to the design of the scoping review. Empirical studie

Sexual and romantic relationships among people experiencing homelessness: A scoping review.

Homelessness is widely recognized as a pervasive issue. Despite increasing research on factors affecting the health and well-being of people who are homeless, one that remains relatively understudied is the role of romantic and sexual relationships. Given that this population has the same needs for intimacy and closeness as anyone else, it is important to understand how these relationships occur, what barriers exist in developing and maintaining them, and what is their impact. This scoping review aimed to (a) characterize the nature of research that has examined sexual and romantic relationshi

15-Year lipid profile effects on cardiovascular events adjusted for cardiovascular risk factors: a cohort study from Middle-East.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidaemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, there are only a few long-term cohort studies. The aim of this unique study is to evaluate the effects of several lipid markers on cardiovascular outcomes during a 15-year follow-up from the Isfahan cohort study (ICS). METHODS: This ongoing cohort study was started in 2001 in three cities of Iran. The study population includes 5432 individuals older than 35 years and with Iranian citizenship. All of the patients were evaluated every 2 years by telephone and a full medical examination with blood sampling was

Constitutional Challenges to Liver Transplant Policy.

BACKGROUND: Liver transplant candidacy determination can be contentious. When transplantation is declined for reasons perceived as violating fundamental rights or discriminating against a protected class-for example, age, race, religion, nationality-the case may involve a constitutional claim. Judicial review of such cases may result in decisions with sweeping implications for transplant policy. METHODS: We reviewed all published court opinions involving liver transplantation in 2 legal databases (Lexis Nexus and WestLaw). We included all cases that involved a denial of liver transplant candi

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor mimicking malignant meningioma in the middle cranial fossa: a case report.

UNLABELLED: The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement has drawn attention to the lack of progress toward racial equity in many domains. Chief among them is the unequal treatment that Black men often face when interacting with law enforcement or within the criminal justice system, which appears heavily associated with the pernicious stereotype that Black men are distinctly aggressive and dangerous. Evidence suggests that Hispanic men are also subject to similar negative stereotypes. We contend that the consequences of this intersectional stereotype are wide-ranging and explore how it manifests and

The relationship of home smoking bans to the physical and mental health of smokers.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to examine whether the adoption of home smoking bans is associated with the physical and mental health of smokers. Two potential pathways that link home smoking bans to smoker's health are analyzed. The first argues that home smoking bans are positively related to physical health by encouraging smoking cessation while reducing daily cigarette consumption. The second suggests that home smoking bans have a negative relationship to smokers' mental health by increasing marginalization and social isolation. METHODS: Data on 28,887 Canadian smokers were analyz

The Social Determination of Racial Inequities in Oral Health Among Indigenous Peoples.

OBJECTIVES: To foster a critical analysis of the racial inequities affecting the oral health (OH) of Indigenous peoples in Brazil, framed by the social determination of the health-disease-care process (SDHP). METHODS: This critical literature review articulates the themes of colonisation, Indigenous peoples' oral health and racial inequities in health through the lens of SDHP. It explores how racial inequities affecting the oral health of Indigenous peoples in Brazil are socially determined, understanding that their health and illness profiles depend on the socioeconomic and legal contexts in

Microaggressions toward widowed older women in daily life: a qualitative descriptive study.

Microaggressions are subtle, often normalized interpersonal expressions of bias or discrimination that may be embedded within everyday social interactions. Despite growing attention to microaggressions, little is known about how they are experienced by widowed older women, particularly within the sociocultural context of Türkiye. This study aimed to explore the everyday experiences of microaggressions among widowed older women in Türkiye. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, involving semi-structured individual interviews analyzed using inductive thematic analysis, with Sue et al. (2

The dialectics of trauma and political conscientization: A psychosocial study of activism for supporting sexual and gender minoritized communities in Brazil.

This qualitative study examined the dialectical association between psychosocial trauma and political conscientization in the lives of activists advocating for persons with marginalized sexual orientations and gender identities (2SLGBTQIA+) in São José dos Campos, Brazil. Drawing on participatory research and grounded in liberation psychology and intersectionality, the study involved collaboration with 10 activists through participation in advocacy activities, semistructured interviews, and collective reflection. Our reflexive thematic analysis indicated four main themes: (a) addressing psycho

Academic pharmacy must do better to accommodate its faculty workforce.

This commentary follows an insightful paper recently published on the current milieu in academic pharmacy. The paper was unique in that it reported the results of in-depth interviews of persons with previously well-established, successful careers as pharmacy faculty who left the academy for various alternative paths. The commentary reflects on that paper along with other current literatures and trends in academic pharmacy and the broader context of academia, particularly the evolving work environments for faculty. We argue that evolutions in the work of pharmacy academicians have been witness

Harnessing the power of One Health education to tackle Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs) and other global health challenges.

One Health is an approach that focuses on balancing and optimizing the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems sustainably. It recognizes that the health and well-being of these three components are interconnected and interdependent. The recent COVID-19 pandemic and other emerging infectious diseases like Monkeypox, Avian Influenza, and Dengue, have highlighted the need to strengthen the health workforce's emergency preparedness, given the close link between human, animal, and environmental health. One Health education lays a strong foundation for a global workforce capable of enhancing syne

The Implications of Health Disparities: A COVID-19 Risk Assessment of the Hispanic Community in El Paso.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, Latinos have suffered from disproportionately high rates of hospitalization and death related to the virus. Health disparities based on race and ethnicity are directly associated with heightened mortality and burden of illness and act as underlying causes for the staggering impacts of COVID-19 in Latin communities in the United States. This is especially true in the city of El Paso, Texas, where over 82% of the population is Hispanic. To ascertain the level of danger that COVID-19 poses in El Paso, we constructed a point-in-time

Nationwide longitudinal population-based study on mortality in Italy by immigrant status.

A systematic analysis of the mortality of immigrant residents throughout Italy has never been carried out. The present study aimed to evaluate differences in mortality by immigrant status. A longitudinal study of the Italian resident population (native and immigrants) recorded in the 2011 National Institute of Statistics Census was conducted. This cohort was followed up from 2012 to 2018 until death, emigration, or end of the study period. The exposure variable was the immigrant status, measured through citizenship, dichotomized into Italian and immigrant. The main outcome was overall and caus
