Application of a Novel and Sustainable Silicate Solution as an Alternative to Sodium Silicate for Clay Swelling Inhibition.

Shale swelling during drilling operations causes many problems mainly related to wellbore instability. The oil-based muds (OBMs) are very effective in controlling the swelling potential of clay-rich shale formation, but their environmental concerns and the economic aspects curtail their usage. In the application of water-based mud (WBM), it is mixed with various swelling inhibitors such as inorganic salts (KCl and NaCl), sodium silicate, polymers, and amines of various types. The above-mentioned materials are however afflicted by some limitations in terms of their toxicity, their effect on dri…

Effect of polycation charge density on polymer conformation at the clay surface and consequently on pharmaceutical binding.

Polycation conformation upon adsorption to a negatively charged surface can be modulated by its charge density. At high charge density monomers directly interact with the surface in a 'trains' conformation and as charge density decreases a high degree of monomers dangle into solution in a 'loops and tails' conformation. In this study, the conformations of polycations upon adsorption to montmorillonite, as a function of polycation charge (20, 50 and 100% of the monomers, denoted as P-Q20, P-Q50 and P-Q100) were characterized and in accordance with their conformation, the adsorption of non-ionic

Functionalized Biochar/Clay Composites for Reducing the Bioavailable Fraction of Arsenic and Cadmium in River Sediment.

Biochar has frequently been used for the treatment of heavy metal pollution in water and soil; its effect on contaminated sediments requires further research. To improve the ability of biochar to immobilize heavy metals in sediment, we prepared a functionalized biochar/attapulgite composite by pyrolysis of the clay attapulgite and zinc chloride-pretreated rice straw biomass. Compared with the original biochar, the biochar/attapulgite composite had a large increase in specific surface area, pore volume, oxygen-containing functional groups, and cation exchange capacity. Biochar effectively impro…

A practical proposal for solving the world's cigarette butt problem: Recycling in fired clay bricks.

The disposal and littering of cigarette butts (CBs) is a serious environmental problem. Trillions of cigarettes are produced every year worldwide, resulting in millions of tonnes of toxic waste being dumped into the environment in the form of cigarette butts. As CBs have poor biodegradability, it can take many years for them to break down. This paper reviews and presents some of the results of a study on the recycling of CBs into fired clay bricks. Bricks with 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% CB content by weight were manufactured and tested, and then compared against control clay bricks with 0% CB con…

Molecular simulation of carbon dioxide, brine, and clay mineral interactions and determination of contact angles.

Capture and subsequent geologic storage of CO2 in deep brine reservoirs plays a significant role in plans to reduce atmospheric carbon emiss … O2 and aqueous fluids on both the hydrophilic and hydrophobic basal surfaces of kaolinite, a common clay mineral. In the presence of a bulk aqueous phase, supercritical CO2 forms a nonwetting droplet above the hydrophilic surface of kaolinite. This CO2 droplet is separated from the mineral surface by distinct layers of water, which prevent the CO2 drop …

The effect of chloride and sulfate ions on the adsorption of Cd2+ on clay and sandy loam Egyptian soils.

Adsorption of Cd(2+) on two types of Egyptian soils: clay (alluvial) and sandy loam (calcareous), was studied. Effect of changing the matrix electrolyte type and concentration was used to mimic the natural soil salts. Kinetics and thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption were calculated at two different electrolyte concentrations: 0.05 N and 0.15 N. The adsorption was described by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Results showed that lower concentration of the NaCl or Na2SO4 electrolytes (0.05 N) had higher adsorption capacity. Also, the maximum adsorption of cadmium when using sulfate coun…

Novel semi-IPN based on crosslinked carboxymethyl starch and clay for the in vitro release of theophylline.

A novel semi-interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) based on crosslinked carboxymethyl starch (CL-CMS) and montmorillonite (MMT) was prepared, where carboxymethylation occurs as a result of the reaction between native starch and monochloroacetic acid in isopropanol/water medium at 60°C. The carboxymethyl starch is further crosslinked and made into a semi-IPN with MMT for the release of theophylline. The drug carrier was characterized using FTIR, XRD and surface analysis using SEM. Studies including physio-chemical analysis, swelling behavior, encapsulation efficiency, effect of MMT content, ef

Use of unnatural amino acids for design of novel organomodified clays as components of nanocomposite biomaterials.

Sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) clay was modified with three different unnatural amino acids in order to design intercalated clay structures that may be used for bone biomaterials applications. Prior work on polymer-clay nanocomposites (PCNs) has indicated the effect of the appropriate choice of modifiers on enhancing properties of PCNs. Our X-ray diffraction results indicate an increase in the d-spacing of Na-MMT clay after it was modified with the three unnatural amino acids. Transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy experiments were carried out on the unmodified and modified MMT …

Diffuse sorption modeling: apparent H/Na, or the same, Al/Na exchange on clays.

Clay minerals are specified by permanent negative surface charge. In solutions of sodium salts, the surface of clay is covered by exchangeable sodium ions. In an acidic field (pH<4-6), sodium ions are displaced from the surface. This apparent H/Na exchange is conditioned by dissolution of alumina, followed by Al/Na exchange. Two kinds of published experimental data were considered in order to follow Al/Na exchange: the first is direct measurement of exchangeable sodium and aluminum in clay, and the second is exchange sorption of trace metal. Because of the equivalency of ionic exchange, trace …

Abiotic transformation of perchloroethylene in homogeneous dithionite solution and in suspensions of dithionite-treated clay minerals.

The reductive dechlorination of perchloroethylene (PCE) in homogeneous solutions of dithionite and at the surfaces of dithionite-citrate-bic … ns of TCE were measured in the heterogeneous reactions. Interestingly, increases in the mass of the clay minerals used, the Fe2+ content in the clay mineral structure, or the dithionite concentration used did not necessarily enhance the abiotic transformation of PCE, as would otherwise be predicted. The most efficient reductive dechlorination of PCE wa …

Optimizations on multi-mineral clayey soil to develop limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) based composite.

The cement industry plays a significant role in contributing to global carbon dioxide emissions, representing a considerable portion of the total environmental impact. In response to growing environmental concerns, supplementary cementitious materials such as calcined clay and limestone have gained prominence due to their abundance and reduced carbon footprint. Among these, limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) has emerged as a promising sustainable alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). This study investigates the feasibility of utilizing locally available non-kaolinitic clayey soil in…

From Bounce to Pump: Natural Clay Nanohybrids Enable Active Interfacial Remodeling for Efficient Herbicide Delivery.

Achieving efficient pesticide deposition on recalcitrant hydrophobic foliage remains a critical challenge in sustainable agriculture. Current strategies predominantly focus on unilaterally modifying liquid formulations, treating leaf surfaces as passive substrates, and ignoring the potential for active solid-side regulation. To overcome this limitation, we propose a "bidirectional solid-liquid interfacial regulation" strategy using aqueous natural clay nanohybrids. These hybrids are precisely assembled from attapulgite (ATP) nanorods and sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) to co-deli…

Fabrication and Healing Potential of Polylactic Acid /Clay/Nd2O3 Nanocomposite Fibers in Diabetic Wound Therapy.

Chronic diabetic wounds are difficult to heal due to impaired neovascularization, dysregulated tissue repair, and prolonged inflammation. To address these challenges, PLA/nanoclay/Nd2O3 nanocomposite fiber mats were fabricated by electrospinning. Structural and morphological analyses confirmed successful incorporation and uniform dispersion of nanoclay and Nd2O3 within the PLA matrix. Nanoclay modulated the scaffold surface, while Nd2O3 enhanced mechanical strength. The intercalated nanoclay network further improved load transfer, reduced fiber diameter, and enhanced surface wettability, suppo…

Strength enhancement of calcium carbide residue-stabilized clay with perlite powder and water treatment sludge.

Clay soils, particularly kaolinite, often exhibit low strength and high deformation, necessitating stabilization for geotechnical applications. This study investigates the potential of calcium carbide residue (CCR) and its partial substitution with perlite powder (PP) and water treatment sludge (WTS) to enhance the strength and microstructure of kaolinite clay. To capture both mechanical response and structural evolution, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tests were conducted at 7, 28, and 56 days of curing. The microstructural changes were also investig…

A universal hydro-mechanical coupled behavior model for clay-bearing strata-Molecular-level simulation approach.

Clay minerals in soils and rocks exhibit large volume change upon interaction with water and this behavior becomes even more complex when the strata are being stressed by the engineering and environmental loads. Therefore, a realistic prediction of the hydro-mechanical behavior of the clay-bearing strata is always a challenge due to their coupled swelling-mechanical response in the cases of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering problems, nuclear waste storage in clay-bearing rock repositories, shale gas extraction, and other uses of clay in the manufacturing industry. All the existing …

Mechanistic Insight into Electron Transfer from Fe(II)-Bearing Clay Minerals to Fe (Hydr)oxides.

Electron transfer (ET) is the essence of most biogeochemical processes related to element cycling and contaminant attenuation, whereas ET between different minerals and the controlling mechanism remain elusive. Here, we used surface-associated Fe(II) as a proxy to explore ET between reduced nontronite NAu-2 (rNAu-2) and Fe (hydr)oxides in their coexisting systems. Results showed that ET could occur from rNAu-2 to ferrihydrite but not to goethite, and the ET amount was determined by the number of reactive sites and the reduction potential difference between rNAu-2 and ferrihydrite. ET proceeded
