OBJECTIVES: Serum aminotransferase levels characteristically fluctuate in chronic hepatitis C, but their relationship to grade (i.e., inflammatory activity) and stage (i.e., degree of fibrosis) of liver disease is uncertain. We therefore correlated aminotransferase levels and liver biopsy findings in 90 patients with serologically confirmed chronic hepatitis C.

We have developed a procedure for testing iduronate sulfatase, the enzyme deficient in Hunter syndrome, in single hair roots. Beta-Hexosaminidase was used as the reference enzyme. Cytochemical tuberculin-associated shifts along with their prognostic evaluation were studied in 30 patients with silicosis and silicotuberculosis with intrathoracic adenopathy. The study revealed that a decrease of alkaline phosphatase activity of neutrophils, alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase lymphocytes could serve as an early indicator of tuberculosis process in the pulmonary tissue and intrathoracic lymph nodes.

Helicobacter pylori is now recognized as possibly playing an etiologic role on the development of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers and adenocarcinoma of the distal stomach. CLO test and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay are rapid, biopsy-dependent diagnostic tests for H. pylori identification. In this study, we assessed four diagnostic methods (CLO test, PCR assay, culture and histological examination) for H. pylori detection in biopsy specimens from 78 patients with gastroduodenal diseases and investigating the efficiency of CLO test and PCR assay for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection.

The authors have modified the technique of the lysozyme test by adding polimixin M sulfate into the gel bacterial medium. Rapid diagnosis with the use of this test is based on different time of the appearance of the lysis areas: in bacterial meningitides the CSF lysozyme activity is detectable within 15-120 min, whereas in viral meningitides it manifests 40-50 min later or does not manifest at all. The results were found to depend on the time of the CSF collection: the earlier the CSF samples were obtained, the higher was the share of positive results.
