The aim of this review is to examine the relationship between endocrine fluctuation and cognitive functioning. A plethora of in vitro and in vivo studies has demonstrated the neuroprotective role of estrogens and their impact on the neurotransmitter systems implicated in cognition. Recent hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) trials in non-demented post-menopausal women suggest a temporary positive effect (notably on verbal memory), and four recent meta-analyses converge to suggest a possible protective effect in relation to Alzheimer's disease (reducing risk by 29 to 44%). However, data from the

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by a peculiar cognitive state. The traumatic event(s) are partly hypermemorized, partly blurred, whereas the ability to store and retrieve new information is impaired. The question is raised as to what the biological systems might be that 'carry' this cognitive paradox. Four possible candidate systems are discussed. It is concluded that understimulation of the corticosteroid receptors, particularly the glucocorticoid receptors (GRs), overactivity of the noradrenaline (NA) and vasopressin (VA) systems, and deficits in the 5-Hydroxytryptamine

To longitudinally examine cognitive-behavioral correlates of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), the authors assessed women with a history of SAD and nondepressed, matched controls across fall, winter, and summer. SAD history participants reported more automatic negative thoughts throughout the year than controls and demonstrated a progression from decreased activity enjoyment during fall to reduced activity frequency during winter. Ruminative response style, measured in fall, predicted symptom severity during the winter. Across assessments, SAD history women endorsed greater depressive affect

CHRONIC BOREDOM and the conditions that induce boredom are associated with a host of undesirable outcomes. It is proposed that the course and treatment of schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses (SMI) that require extended care in community-based treatment facilities are often complicated by such outcomes. Brief case studies are used to illustrate how sustained boredom can contribute to (1) postpsychotic mood disturbances, (2) increased risk-taking and substance-seeking behaviors in the residual phases of the illness, (3) the exacerbation of positive symptoms such as paranoia and hallu

Neurolipidoses may present as psychiatric illness or dementia which may be isolated for a long time without neurological manifestations. Thus the relation with a metabolic disease may be difficult to establish. In this survey, we wish to present our clinical and biological experience in relation with lysosomal or peroxisomal disorders giving rise to neurolipidoses, a review of the literature, as well as the elements which allow to present a diagnostic strategy. We report mainly on metachromatic leukodystrophy, GM2 gangliosidosis, Fabry's disease, Niemann-Pick type C, Kufs disease, adrenoleukod

Cognitive impairment is frequently observed in patients with alcohol misuse or alcohol addiction. Multiple cognitive functions are reduced in these patients. Frontal lobe functions, as planning, abstract thinking, set shifting or continuous performance are most frequently affected. Alcohol amnestic syndrome, alcohol dementia and the Wernicke-Korsakow-Syndrome constitute distinct entities. Alcohol dementia follows the diagnostic criteria of dementia with clear evidence for alcohol abuse or alcohol addiction. The diagnostic procedure of alcohol-induced cognitive impairment includes medical histo

In 1985, Liebowitz et al labeled SAD the "neglected anxiety disorder." Clearly, times have changed. Although it took 10 years after this pronouncement for the first cognitive-behavioral model of SAD to be introduced, a great deal of research has been carried out and a great deal has been learned since then. The core features of these models seem to hold a great deal of validity. Perhaps the greatest "learning curve" has been seen in work done on the processing of the self as social object, a component of both cognitive-behavioral models of SAD. A great deal of empiric evidence now suggests tha

The present study was designed with the aim of examining the presence of psychiatric diagnosis and intellectual impairment in a sample of patients with Friedreich's ataxia. A consecutive sample of 21 patients presenting with Friedreich's Ataxia were evaluated by means of a neuropsychiatric interview. Only one patient was diagnosed as mentally retarded. Out of the 15 patients of the sample who were evaluated with be WAIS, all of them fell within a normal intellectual range. The idea that Friedreich's Ataxia produces cognitive impairment and serious psychiatric symptoms came from the earliest de

Dementia represents a complex heterogeneity of disorders. For Alzheimer's disease great progress in the understanding of underlying genetical, neuropathological and neurochemical mechanisms of the disease has been made during recent years. A variety of therapeutic approaches with cognitive enhancing drugs have been tested in Alzheimer patients. Presently, four main treatment strategies prevail, namely transmitter replacement therapy, growth factors, anti-inflammatory drugs and drugs affecting amyloid processing in the brain. The transmitter therapy is so far the most explored and fruitful stra

The present study examined the efficacy of an 8-wk, cognitive-behavioral group treatment for panic disorder. Patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia were randomly assigned to treatment (N = 34) or delayed treatment control (N = 33). The treatment consisted of: (a) education and corrective information; (b) cognitive therapy; (c) training in diaphragmatic breathing; and (d) interoceptive exposure. At posttreatment, 85% of treated Ss were panic free, compared to 30% of controls. Treated Ss also showed clinically significant improvement on indices of anxi

Level of cognitive function is usually conceptualized as a feature of organic psychiatric disorders. Classically, its assessment is part of the mental status examination. Standardized tests, such as the Folstein battery, are used to screen for organic disorders by measuring level and possible impairment of cognitive function through the stipulation of cutoff points. However, contemporary definitions of psychiatric disorders do not embrace such a categorical view of cognitive function. It is important to measure the level of cognitive function in all types of psychiatric disorders in relation t

BACKGROUND: Improved understanding of the cognitive and behavioural processes underpinning panic disorder (PD) in adolescents could improve identification and treatment.
AIMS: We investigated whether the processes outlined in Clark's (1986) cognitive model of PD are observed in adolescents with PD, are specific to PD, and predict symptom severity.
METHOD: We recruited three groups of adolescents (12-17 years): 34 with a PD diagnosis, 33 with another anxiety disorder excluding PD ('clinical control'), and 34 scoring below the clinical cut-off on a measure of anxiety symptoms ('community contr

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common mental health disorder, with an incidence of up to 12.5% among primary care patients. Most often, PTSD is detected in combat veterans, victims of terrorist attacks and terror, but it can also be a consequence of traumatic brain injury and medical interventions. Impaired cognitive functioning is a key feature of PTSD, including attention deficits and reduced processing speed, executive dysfunction, and impairments in verbal learning and memory. Cognitive impairments in PTSD are significantly persistent and are largely similar in nature to neurop

OBJECTIVE: Problems with cognitive flexibility have been associated with multiple psychiatric disorders, but there has been little understanding of how cognitive flexibility compares across these disorders. This study examined problems of cognitive flexibility in young adults across a range of psychiatric disorders using a validated computerized trans-diagnostic flexibility paradigm. We hypothesized that obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (eg, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trichotillomania, and skin-picking disorder) would be associated with pronounced flexibility problems as they are mo

Evidence-based diagnosis specific cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) protocols for anxiety disorders, currently recommended in national clinical guidelines, have shortcomings in relation to the application of group therapy in the mental health service. Transdiagnostic CBT is theory-driven, targeting common personality traits and emotion-driven behaviour observed in all of the anxiety disorders. This review recapitulates the theory and the evidence base. More head-to-head comparison studies are needed, in particular concerning group therapy. The current evidence is, however, very promising.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by the presence of debilitating obsessions and compulsions. Cognitive and behavioral models of OCD provide a strong theoretic and empirical foundation for informing effective psychotherapeutic treatment. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for OCD, which includes a deliberate emphasis on exposure and response/ritual prevention, has consistently demonstrated robust efficacy for the treatment of pediatric and adult OCD and is the front-line psychotherapeutic treatment for OCD. Two case vignettes describing CBT for OCD in practice as well as rec

Cognitive disorders and symptoms are key features of many mental and neurological diseases, with a large spectrum of impaired domains. Because of their possible evolution and detrimental functioning impact, they are a major pharmacological target for both symptomatic and disease-modifier drugs, while few cognitive enhancers have been marketed with an insufficient efficiency. It explains the need to model these cognitive disorders beyond the modelization of mental or neurological diseases themselves. According to the experimental strategy used to induce cognitive impairment, three categories of

OBJECTIVES: Tic disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple involuntary movements of muscles or vocalization. Although tic symptoms subside as the patient ages, some patients suffer from significant functional impairments related to severe tic symptoms. This manuscript aimed to review the latest scientific evidences for the effect of cognitive-behavioral interventions on tic disorder.
METHODS: The relevant studies were identified by searching medical research databases. We focused our search on studies published between 2000 and 2020 in order to reflect the latest scie
