Apple (Malus × domestica) is one of the world's premier fruit crops. Apple Glomerella leaf spot (GLS) is caused by Colletotrichum spp., jeopardizing global apple supply and incurring millions of dollars in annual losses. The development of resistant apple varieties has evolved from conventional selection breeding to deliberate breeding strategies that incorporate statistical analysis and experimental design, and now increasingly integrate genetic and genomic data. Innovative methods like marker-assisted selection and genetic editing have facilitated the development of cultivars resistant to GL

Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, is a significant fungal disease that affects poplar trees globally, leading to reduced yields and substantial economic losses. Proanthocyanidins (PAs) play a key role in resistance to fungal pathogens; however, the mechanisms by which PAs mediate resistance to anthracnose in poplar remain poorly understood. In this study, we identified PopbZIP2, a transcription factor-encoding gene that was initially expressed in infected leaves and subsequently in uninfected leaves in response to C. gloeosporioides infection. As a transcriptional activato

The iron-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) NH2-MIL-101(Fe) (MIL) has gained widespread attention as a drug carrier material in agriculture. In this study, a multifunctional nanocomposite, MIL@A@D@C, was successfully synthesized by loading the fungicide azoxystrobin (AZOX) and immunoinducer d-cellobiose (D) onto MIL, followed by surface modification with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The loading capacity of MIL was optimized by varying solvent conditions and the mass ratio of MIL to AZOX, revealing that ethanol as the reaction solvent and a MIL: AZOX mass ratio of 1:4 resulted in the hi

A mussel-inspired chitosan-based coating with enhanced interfacial adhesion was developed via metal-phenolic network formation by incorporating tannic acid (TA) and Fe3+ into chitosan (CS). The CS/TA/Fe coating exhibited significantly improved wettability and adhesion on fruit surfaces, as confirmed by contact angle measurements, adhesion work calculations, and molecular dynamics simulations showing stronger binding affinity to the fruit wax model (C31H64). The coating demonstrated potent antibacterial activity against Escherichia. coli (93.07%) and Staphylococcus. aureus (83.77%), strong anti

Apple anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, severely threatens global apple production. Autotetraploid 'Hanfu' apples show stronger anthracnose resistance than diploids, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. This study identified a novel salicylic acid (SA)-regulated lignin biosynthesis signaling pathway that is closely associated with the enhanced resistance in autotetraploid 'Hanfu' apples. Autotetraploid apples accumulated higher endogenous SA levels, and the SA-responsive transcription factor MdTGA9 was markedly induced by both SA treatment and C. gloeosp

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a broad-spectrum soilborne fungal pathogen, causing substantial yield losses in crops worldwide. Auxiliary Activity Family 5 (AA5) copper radical oxidases (CROs) are members of the carbohydrate active enzymes (CAZymes), valued for their potential as biocatalysts. Although they were reported to contribute to fungal development and disease progression in some phytopathogenic fungi such as Colletotrichum graminicola, the roles of AA5 enzymes in S. sclerotiorum remain largely unexplored. Here, we systematically investigated S. sclerotiorum AA5 genes through reverse gene

Sucrose non-fermenting protein 7 (SNF7) is a core operator of the endosomal sorting complex required for transport III (ESCRT-III) component mediating protein sorting and degradation. To date, the SNF7 gene family remains poorly characterized in plants, particularly in maize (Zea mays L.). Here, we integrated bioinformatic and transcriptomic analyses to systematically characterize the ZmSNF7 gene family and its regulatory potential in stress responses. In total, 20 ZmSNF7 genes were identified genome-wide and classified into three phylogenetic clades, with conserved motifs and similar tertiary

The overuse of chemical fungicides against fungal pathogens adversely affects soil and plant health, resulting in environmental problems and food safety. Therefore, biocontrol is considered as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective green technique in environmental protection and agricultural production. We obtained a bacterial strain N23 from a contaminated plate which showed significant inhibition to anthracnose. The strain N23 was identified as Bacillus velezensis based on 16S rRNA gene, gyrA gene, and whole-genome sequence. The bacterium N23 was able to suppress the mycelial growth

Antifungal resistance and toxicity problems of conventional fungicides highlighted the requirement of search for new safe antifungal agents. To comply with the requirement, we discovered four new non-cytotoxic lipopeptides, gageopeptides A-D, 1-4, from a marine-derived bacterium Bacillus subtilis. The structures and stereochemistry of gageopeptides were determined by NMR data analysis and chemical means. Gageopeptides exhibited significant antifungal activities against pathogenic fungi Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, and Colletotrichum acutatum with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)

The B. safensis RGM 2450 and B. siamensis RGM 2529 strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of plants presenting resilience to abiotic and biotic stress conditions. To understand the implications of bacteria in resilience, a genomic and experimental analysis was carried out on their biostimulant and phytopathogenic antagonist properties. Genome analyses of both strains indicated that they have the potential to synthesize bioactive compounds such as the battery of non-ribosomal peptides, polyketides, extracellular enzymes and phytohormones. These results were consistent with the antagonistic

Polygalacturonase-inhibiting protein (PGIP) is a cell wall-associated protein that specifically binds to and inhibits the activity of fungal endopolygalacturonases. The Phaseolus vulgaris gene encoding PGIP has been cloned and characterized. Using a fragment of the cloned pgip gene as a probe in Northern blot experiments, it is demonstrated that the pgip mRNA accumulates in suspension-cultured bean cells following addition of elicitor-active oligogalacturonides or fungal glucan to the medium. Rabbit polyclonal antibodies specific for PGIP were generated against a synthetic peptide designed fro

The escalating prevalence of fungicide resistance has severely diminished the effectiveness of conventional antifungal agents, creating substantial challenges for fungal infection control. To combat this emerging threat, we rationally designed a series of indole-carbohydrazide hybrids, aiming to develop novel membrane-targeting antifungal agents. Of particular note, compound b6 demonstrated optimal antifungal efficacy against Colletotrichum fructicola (C. f., EC50 = 3.39 μg/mL) and Gibberella zeae (G. z., EC50 = 3.49 μg/mL). Comprehensive mechanistic investigations employing multiple approache

Phytoalexins constitute a broad category of pathogen- and insect-inducible biochemicals that locally protect plant tissues. Because of their agronomic significance, maize and rice have been extensively investigated for their terpenoid-based defenses, which include insect-inducible monoterpene and sesquiterpene volatiles. Rice also produces a complex array of pathogen-inducible diterpenoid phytoalexins. Despite the demonstration of fungal-induced ent-kaur-15-ene production in maize over 30 y ago, the identity of functionally analogous maize diterpenoid phytoalexins has remained elusive. In resp
