Twenty children who were in unmaintained full haematological remission after treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) showed a significantly lower incidence of granulocyte-macrophage progenitor cells (GM-CFC) in the bone marrow compared to controls. One-hundred and four patients with a diagnosis of aplastic anaemia (28) or neutropenia (76) referred to our laboratory for assessment of granulopoiesis were studied. Bone marrow myeloid progenitor cell (CFU-C) frequency was measured and in 85 patients, inhibitor studies with either in-vitro drug addition or plasma co-culture were performed. The interaction of elicited murine polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and the thermally dimorphic fungal pathogen Blastomyces dermatitidis in vitro was studied. In the development of human foetus, liver is an important haemopoietic organ. We have determined the liver weight and total hepatic nucleated cells from 24 foetuses on the one hand, and CFU-C yield, total number of CFU-C and T-lymphocytes in liver from 22 foetuses of different ages on the other. From the kinetic observations through the early developmental period of the foetuses, the maximum yield of CFU-C or the total number of CFU-C in the liver occurs at 4-5 months of gestation; during the first 5 months of gestation the percentage of T-lymphocytes in the liver is about 1-2%.
