BACKGROUND: Skin diseases are common public health problems throughout the world. Studies on skin problems are rare in Ethiopia. Easy and cheap methods of identifying skin conditions in the community are poorly developed in the country.
OBJECTIVES: (1) To assess whether the newly developed Dermatological Screening Questionnaire (DSQ) can be used to effectively screen for common skin diseases and (2) to estimate the prevalence of skin diseases in a rural community.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in the rural community residing on the islands of Lake Zeway. A locally prepared

We conducted a school-based assessment of the geographic distribution of Wuchereria bancrofti infection in Leogane Commune, Haiti, using the immunochromatographic test. In multivariate analyses performed using generalized linear mixed models, children attending schools in the foothills and plains were 3.95 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.28-12.23) and 23.56 (95% CI = 8.99-61.79) times as likely to be infected, respectively, as children attending mountain schools. Infection prevalence decreased with increasing altitude, but some local foci of infection were detected at higher altitudes. Highe

OBJECTIVE: To test a training procedure designed to enable severely paralyzed patients to communicate by means of self-regulation of slow cortical potentials.
DESIGN: Application of the Thought Translation Device to evaluate the procedure in patients with late-stage amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
SETTING: Training sessions in the patients' homes.
PARTICIPANTS: Two male patients with late-stage ALS.
INTERVENTIONS: Patients learned voluntary control of their slow cortical potentials by means of an interface between the brain and a computer. Training was based on visual feedback of slow

The primary goal of the study was to compare the psychosocial functioning of an untreated, community sample of DSM-III-R dysthymia subjects (N = 24) at screening to that of a matched sample of community nondepressed volunteers (N = 18) with no lifetime or current history of axis I disorders. Subjects were compared across a number of psychosocial indices. The dysthymics were found to be less sociable (introversion) and clinically high on neuroticism-instability, external in regard to their causal attributions, less stable for positive uncontrollable events and more stable and global for negativ

Serious illness conversations (SICs) are often delayed or avoided in community-based healthcare due to clinician discomfort and lack of training. Given that many patients wish to die at home, yet often do not, there is a need for structured communication training in home care and hospice settings to ensure the care we provide aligns with patient and family preferences. This quality improvement project aimed to assess whether a brief, structured, in-person training session could improve clinician confidence in conducting SICs. A pre-test/post-test design was used. Clinicians participated in a 1

INTRODUCTION: The Community Engagement (CE) Studio is an established approach for integrating community and patient perspectives into research. Despite its widespread implementation, little information is available about how this model has been adapted across institutions to accommodate varying resources and capacities.
METHODS: The Patient and Community Engagement in Research (PaCER) Program at UNC-Chapel Hill modified the CE Studio model - with adaptations to recruitment, onboarding, virtual delivery, compensation, and session planning - resulting in the development of a new Community Feedb

BACKGROUND: Common mental health conditions are increasing in England, with growing severity and unmet need. Evidence shows that mental wellbeing is strongly shaped by wider social determinants such as income, housing, employment, and relationships. Conventional clinical approaches may not adequately address these underlying factors, highlighting the need for preventative, community-based solutions.
AIM: This paper describes the community involvement and engagement (CEI) approach used to develop CoSign, a digital signposting tool designed to help individuals identify social determinants contr

School feeding programs (SFPs) are widely recognized as critical interventions for addressing child malnutrition, food insecurity, and poor school attendance. In Monduli district, Tanzania, where pastoralist livelihoods are vulnerable to recurrent climatic stressors, understanding factors shaping SFP effectiveness is essential for sustainability. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 163 households with children enrolled in two primary schools, with one implementing an SFP (Naitolia Primary School) and one without (Mswakini Juu Primary School). Data were collected through

BACKGROUND: Individuals with dementia have communication limitations resulting from cognitive impairments that define the syndrome. Whereas there are numerous cognitive assessments for individuals with dementia, there are far fewer communication assessments. The Profiling Communication Ability in Dementia (P-CAD) was developed to address this gap.
AIMS: The purpose of this study was to examine the concurrent validity, longitudinal validity and inter- and intra-rater reliability of the P-CAD in a population of people with dementia and their communication partners.
METHOD: The P-CAD was admini

INTRODUCTION: onchocerciasis is the leading cause of epilepsy in onchocerciasis-endemic communities. Our study aimed to determine the incidence, prevalence and community awareness of Onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE) in two onchocerciasis-endemic rural communities in Cameroon.
METHODS: we conducted a community-based cross-sectional study in two rural villages (Yangafock I, and Yangafock II) in the Mbam et Kim division of the Center Region of Cameroon. Door-to-door household visits were conducted to screen for individuals with epilepsy. OAE was defined using previously established crite

The aim of this interpretive qualitative study was to explore how environmental factors influence the transition from relying solely on graphic symbols to using spelling in face-to-face communicative interactions, from the perspective of literate adults with speech and motor impairments who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Fourteen adults either chose to submit a written story with weekly email follow-up, took part in interviews conducted via Zoom1, or chose to communicate solely by email. Researchers analyzed data using Charmaz's (2014) constructivist grounded theory appr

This article explains the importance of a communities of practice (CoP) model for continually aligning medical education and clinical transformation with contemporary health issues. It describes the evolution and advantages of using CoP as a model for transforming medical education and clinical practice and applies the CoP methodology to addressing the changing needs of socially vulnerable populations (LGBTQ [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning], persons experiencing homelessness, and migrant farm workers). In conclusion, this article describes CoP-led activities, achiev

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a common clinical condition in older adults with significant implications for health and quality of life (QOL). However, its prevalence and associated factors in the Indian community-dwelling older adults remain understudied. The present study aims at identifying the prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia symptoms in Indian community-dwelling older adults and identifying the age-related comorbid variables associated with an increased risk of oropharyngeal dysphagia in this population.
METHODS: Total 384 community-dwelling older adults (60 years of age or older) who wer

PURPOSE: Falls are a modifiable source of morbidity for older adults with cancer, yet are underassessed in oncology practice. In this secondary analysis of a nationwide cluster-randomized controlled trial, we examined characteristics associated with patient-oncologist conversations about falls, and whether oncologist knowledge of geriatric assessment (GA) resulted in more conversations.
METHODS: Eligible patients (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02107443) were age ≥ 70 years, had stage III/IV solid tumor or lymphoma, were being treated with noncurative treatment intent, and ≥ 1 GA domain im

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact beyond physical morbidity and mortality. A mid-cycle Community Health Needs Assessment survey was administered in 1 community to generate data to evaluate change in community well-being since the beginning of the pandemic.
METHODS: Surveys were mailed to 2,000 randomly selected residents in Olmsetd County, Minnesota. The surveys included the WHO Well-being Index (previously included in the 2018 Community Health Needs Assessment) and new subjective questions regarding behavior change. Changes in well-being were calculated using a
