BACKGROUND: It is estimated that over one billion persons worldwide have some form of disability. However, there is lack of knowledge and prioritisation of how to serve the needs and provide opportunities for people with disabilities. The community-based rehabilitation (CBR) guidelines, with sufficient and sustained support, can assist in providing access to rehabilitation services, especially in less resourced settings with low resources for rehabilitation. In line with strengthening the implementation of the health-related CBR guidelines, this study aimed to determine what workforce characte

BACKGROUND: As the burden of opioid use disorder (OUD) increases in low- and middle-income countries, expanding access to medications for opioid use disorder, including methadone maintenance therapy, is essential. Decentralized models of methadone service delivery aim to improve treatment access, reduce costs for clients and burdens on health systems, and deliver more client-centered care. However, questions remain about the feasibility, acceptability, and implementation of decentralized models for methadone delivery, particularly in Africa. We qualitatively examined client and provider perspe

Planning the implementation of evidence-based mental health services entails commitment to both rigour and community relevance, which entails navigating the challenges of collaboration between professionals and community members in a planning environment which is neither 'top-down' nor 'bottom-up'. This research focused on collaboration among different stakeholders (e.g. researchers, service-providers, persons with lived experience [PWLE]) at five project sites across Canada in the planning of At Home/Chez Soi, a Housing First initiative for homeless people with mental health problems. The res

Public health social work is committed to improving the health and well-being of individuals and communities. Collaborative partnerships can be a tremendous resource and valuable approach to meeting community needs. This article discusses the essential role of partnership and community learning through the case study of a student-faculty team engaged in collaborative research on homelessness in upstate New York in an effort to inform the development of a community affordable housing plan. The goals of the project were to (1) improve understanding of homelessness at the local level, (2) contrib

BACKGROUND: There is unmet need for family planning in Rwanda. We previously developed an evidence-based couples' family planning counseling (C)FPC program in the capital city that combines: (1) fertility goal-based family planning counseling with a focus on long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) for couples wishing to delay pregnancy; (2) health center capacity building for provision of LARC methods, and (3) LARC promotion by community health workers (CHW) trained in community-based provision of oral and injectable contraception. From 2015 to 2016, this service was integrated into eight

The Community Health Workers (CHWs) for COVID Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) project supported CHWs to strengthen community resilience to combat COVID-19 and address health disparities. This qualitative, participatory case study aimed to identify the sustainability challenges and solutions faced by health organizations and care teams integrating CHWs as change agents. From June to August 2024, 27 interviews were conducted with CHWs (n = 9), program staff (n = 9), and program partners (n = 9), each having expertise in CHW workforce capacity. This study targeted two domains (funding st

The Children's Mental Health Initiative (CMHI) is funded by the Center for Mental Health Services within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. CMHI assists communities in developing comprehensive, coordinated services for children with serious emotional disturbances and their families. Broadly speaking, these systems are designed to be child centered, youth guided, family driven, community based, and culturally competent. To assure implementation of the "youth-guided" core value in the national evaluation, an advisory group of youth coordinator/youth teams representing

Due to the events of September 11, 2001 and the bioterrorism-related anthrax episodes, the United States has escalated efforts to better prepare the nation for terrorist attacks. Early recognition and management of a biological attack are largely dependent on the clinical expertise of frontline health care personnel. Nurses are recognized as an integral part of this team. Schools of nursing should integrate bioterrorism education into their curricula to address this growing frontier of health care management. This article outlines the necessary components of bioterrorism education for nurses,

As the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has spread globally, with no effective treatment or vaccine yet available, governments in many countries have put in place social interventions to control the outbreak. The various lockdown measures may have devastating impacts on economies and livelihoods. This approach risks undermining public trust in government responses and therefore undermines efforts to promote behaviour change, which is key to the success of social interventions. Important lessons can be drawn from past Ebola outbreaks and the human immunodeficiency virus pandemic on

Mental illness is experienced at a higher rate among incarcerated individuals than the general population. This study is one of the first assessing the association of a jail-based mental health (MH) transition planning program with continuity of care (CoC) (defined as no gap in treatment upon reentry), behavioral health treatment engagement, and rearrest. A one group pre-posttest design merged three data sources: program, community-based MH treatment, and jail data. Participants included 161 people from a Midwest metropolitan county jail. The utilization of MH treatment significantly increased

Advance care planning is a critical process that allows individuals to articulate their values and preferences for end-of-life care before a medical crisis occurs. This study explored the challenges that religious leaders experience when engaging in advance care planning and death-related conversations with first- and second-generation Korean Americans, and the strategies employed to overcome these challenges. Using a descriptive qualitative study design, interviews were conducted with 12 religious leaders in the United States who provide spiritual/pastoral care to Korean Americans. Analysis r

INTRODUCTION: Expanding access to voluntary family planning is a global health priority, yet progress has been uneven across low-income and middle-income countries. Despite being a fragile state with historically high fertility and limited health resources, Sierra Leone has achieved one of the fastest increases in modern contraceptive prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa. This study explores the drivers of this progress through a mixed-methods case study.
METHODS: We analysed national-level data from urban and rural settings, and engaged diverse stakeholders including family planning professional

Since the 1970s, most births in the United States have been planned to occur in a hospital. However, a small percentage of Americans choose to give birth outside of a hospital. The number of out-of-hospital births has increased, with one in every 61 U.S. births (1.64%) occurring out of the hospital in 2018. Out-of-hospital (or community) birth can be planned or unplanned. Of those that are planned, most occur at home and are assisted by midwives. Patients who choose a planned community birth do so for multiple reasons. International observational studies that demonstrate comparable outcomes be

BACKGROUND: Contraceptive use and family planning have traditionally been viewed as women's responsibility, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Despite growing evidence highlighting the positive impact of male involvement in improving contraceptive uptake, continuation, and reproductive health outcomes, the participation of male partners remains limited. This review explores the critical role of male partners in contraceptive decision-making and synthesizes current evidence on the barriers impeding their participation. It further identifies strategies and interventions to foster
