The comorbidity of DSM-III-R personality disorders in somatization disorder.

In order to understand psychiatric factors that complicate the medical management of somatizing patients, 94 subjects with known somatization disorder (SD) were evaluated for 13 personality disorders with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders. Referred from multiple primary care settings, the patient sample was predominantly female (85%), married (67%), high school graduates (64%), and had a mean age of 43. Structured interviews documented that 23.4% of SD patients had one personality disorder, and 37.2% had two or more disorders. The four most frequently identi

[Inbred disgust propensity in the aspect of the development of pathological personality].

Correlations between inborn (constituional) disgust propensity, dynamics of personality disorders and development of contamination fear in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were studied in 54 patients with milder forms of mysophobia. Three types of contamination fear characterized by different combinations of disgust propensity and personality traits were singled out. Clinical features of OCD were shown to correspond to premorbid personality while denotative characteristics of OCD were correlated with constituional phenomenon of disgust propensity. The results suggest that disgust propensity

Dependent personality, separation anxiety disorder and other anxiety disorders in OCD.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether dependent personality and/or general personality dimensions might explain the strong relationships between separation anxiety disorder (Sep-AD) and three other anxiety disorders (agoraphobia, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder) in individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS: Using data from 509 adult participants collected during the OCD Collaborative Genetic Study, we used logistic regression models to evaluate the relationships between Sep-AD, dependent personality score, general personality dimension

Boundaries of schizophrenia.

The frontiers of schizophrenia are being increasingly challenged from several directions. In addition to ongoing debate as to divisions between schizophrenia and disorders of the schizophrenic spectrum, including schizotypal personality disorder and schizophreniform disorder, it has been suggested that obsessive-compulsive disorder might overlap phenomenologically with schizophrenia. There has been a long debate around the relationship of schizophrenia to affective disorders, particularly bipolar and schizoaffective disorder. The evidence suggests that although schizotypal personality and schi

Psychiatric and psychometric issues in acné excoriée.

Psychiatric and psychometric issues were assessed in 12 acné excoriée patients. Two patients exhibited a DSM-III-R dysthymia and 2 patients a DSM-III-R personality disorder, which were considered as associated comorbidities. Most patients reported concern for being unattractive and a compulsive urge to manipulate their skin. However, 8 out 12 patients did not fulfill criteria for any DSM-III-R disorder. In particular, we could not find evidence for the assumption of underlying obsessive-compulsive disorders or body image disorders in acné excoriée.

Subjects with additional Axis I diagnoses were more anxious and depressed than those with no additional Axis I disorder. Classification and treatment of obsessional slowness.

Obsessional slowness is regarded as an uncommon but severely disabling variant of obsessive-compulsive disorder. This paper examines the psychopathology, classification, pathophysiology and treatment of obsessional slowness. It argues that primary obsessional slowness does not require classification as a separate syndrome because it can be found to be secondary to recognised phenomena of obsessive-compulsive disorder or anankastic personality disorder. The treatment described in the literature is not thought to be successful in the long term, and controlled trials are required to evaluate new

DSM-III-R personality disorders in a mood and anxiety disorders clinic: prevalence, comorbidity, and clinical correlates.

This study examined the prevalence, comorbidity, and clinical correlates of personality disorders in an outpatient sample (N = 352) with anxiety and depression. Subjects were diagnosed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID) on Axes I and II, and they also completed interview and self-report measures of symptoms. Subjects with a personality disorder were less likely to be married, more likely to be single or divorced, had lower family incomes, had more severe symptoms of both anxiety and depression, and had a greater number of lifetime Axis I diagnoses.
