When feeling skillful impairs coordination in a lottery selection task.

Choosing a major field of study to secure a good job after graduation is a tacit coordination problem that requires considering others' choices. We examine how feeling skillful, either induced (Experiment 1) or measured (Experiment 2), affects coordination in this type of task. In both experiments participants chose between two lotteries, one offering a larger prize than the other. Participants' entry into the chosen lottery was either related or unrelated to their skill, with the final prize allocated randomly to one of the entrants in each lottery. Importantly, across conditions skill was ir

Adjunctive behaviors are operants.

Adjunctive behaviors such as schedule-induced polydipsia are said to be induced by periodic delivery of incentives, but not reinforced by them. That standard treatment assumes that contingency is necessary for conditioning and that delay of reinforcement gradients are very steep. The arguments and evidence for this position are reviewed and rejected. In their place, data are presented that imply different gradients for different classes of responses. Proximity between response and reinforcer, rather than contingency or contiguity, is offered as a key principle of association. These conceptions

Born to fear: non-associative vs associative factors in the etiology of phobias.

Poulton and Menzies (Behaviour Research & Therapy 40 (2001) 127-149) review two lines of evidence as supporting a non-associative pathway to the origins of "evolutionary relevant phobias". First, in retrospective studies of mode of onset some recall they have always had this fear. We review here solid evidence that retrospective recall is notoriously unreliable. Second, they note as many nonphobics recall relevant associative learning experiences as do phobics. We argue such studies are very inconclusive because they fail to consider many experiential and personality vulnerability (and invulne

Motivational sensitivity of outcome-response priming: Experimental research and theoretical models.

Outcome-response (O-R) priming is at the core of various associative theories of human intentional action. This is a simple and parsimonious mechanism by which activation of outcome representations (e.g. thinking about the light coming on) leads to activation of the associated motor patterns required to achieve it (e.g. pushing the light switch). In the current manuscript, we review the evidence for such O-R associative links demonstrated by converging (yet until now, separate) strands of research. While there is a wealth of evidence that both the perceptual and motivational properties of an o

Bayesian reinforcement learning: A basic overview.

We and other animals learn because there is some aspect of the world about which we are uncertain. This uncertainty arises from initial ignorance, and from changes in the world that we do not perfectly know; the uncertainty often becomes evident when our predictions about the world are found to be erroneous. The Rescorla-Wagner learning rule, which specifies one way that prediction errors can occasion learning, has been hugely influential as a characterization of Pavlovian conditioning and, through its equivalence to the delta rule in engineering, in a much wider class of learning problems. Convulsant versus typical barbiturates: effects on conflict behavior in the rat.

Typical barbiturates produce a spectrum of behavioral effects, including anti-convulsant, muscle relaxant, sedative hypnotic and anti-anxiety actions. In contrast to these typical barbiturates, there exists a group of barbiturates which are pro-, rather than anti-convulsant. The effects of these convulsant barbiturates on anxiety-related behaviors have not been examined. Therefore, the present studies were designed to compare the effects of the convulsant barbiturate CHEB to those of a number of typical barbiturates in the Conditioned Suppression of Drinking (CSD) paradigm, an "animal model" f

The effects of early life pain and juvenile fear conditioning on CRF-receptor expression in the amygdala and hypothalamus of the juvenile rat.

Early life pain and stress have lasting consequences on nervous system development that can interact with later stress or trauma to create a susceptibility to fear, anxiety, depression and chronic pain among other psychological disorders. Recent work has identified changes in corticotropin releasing factor signaling in limbic system structures, such as the amygdala and hypothalamus, as a key mechanism behind these changes - albeit in a sex-dependent manner. CRF has two major receptors, CRFR1 and CRFR2 which have also been shown to play key roles in fear and pain expression. The current work ex

No significant effect of frequent online sexual behaviour on Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT): Implications for compulsive sexual behaviour disorder.

Reward based learning is broadly acknowledged to underpin the development and maintenance of addictive behaviour although the mechanism in sexual compulsivity is less understood. Using a Pavlovian-to-Instrumental Transfer (PIT) task we tested whether the motivational aspect of conditioned Pavlovian conditioned stimulus invigorated instrumental responding in relation to specific compatible monetary rewards. Performance on the task was analysed between two groups of males based on Low (N = 38) and High (N = 41) self-report online sexual behaviour (OSB). Psychometric tests including sexual compul

Factors associated with early discharge from a multidisciplinary work rehabilitation program for chronic low back pain.

The need to document cost-benefit of comprehensive work rehabilitation services represents a critical requirement for its long-term viability as a treatment option for injured workers. One approach to improving cost-benefit is to identify patients who experience difficulty completing a rigorous goal-oriented treatment approach. This study examined a set of psychological, pain, perceived work environment, and patient expectation measures in order to determine whether such factors were associated with failure to complete rehabilitation. Patients (n = 168) presenting with low back pain who partic

Pavlovian-to-Instrumental Transfer across Mental Disorders: A Review.

A mechanism known as Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT) describes a phenomenon by which the values of environmental cues acquired through Pavlovian conditioning can motivate instrumental behavior. PIT may be one basic mechanism of action control that can characterize mental disorders on a dimensional level beyond current classification systems. Therefore, we review human PIT studies investigating subclinical and clinical mental syndromes. The literature prevails an inhomogeneous picture concerning PIT. While enhanced PIT effects seem to be present in non-substance-related disorders, over

Mechanisms of chronic pain in inflammatory rheumatism: the role of descending modulation.

Persistent pain despite satisfactory disease treatment is frequent in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and spondyloarthritis (Spa) and may result from specific changes in central pain processing. We assessed these mechanisms further by systematically comparing thermal pain thresholds and conditioned pain modulation (CPM) between patients with active RA or Spa and healthy controls. We included 50 patients with RA and 50 patients with Spa and 100 age-matched and sex-matched controls. Heat and cold pain thresholds (HPT-CPT) were measured on the dominant forearm, and CPM was assessed by applying conditio

Pharmacology of human experimental anxiety.

This review covers the effect of drugs affecting anxiety using four psychological procedures for inducing experimental anxiety applied to healthy volunteers and patients with anxiety disorders. The first is aversive conditioning of the skin conductance responses to tones. The second is simulated public speaking, which consists of speaking in front of a video camera, with anxiety being measured with psychometric scales. The third is the Stroop Color-Word test, in which words naming colors are painted in the same or in a different shade, the incongruence generating a cognitive conflict. The last

Modelling social fear in mice: advancements in social fear conditioning and social defeat paradigms.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and chronic mental illness whose pathogenesis is not yet fully understood, and treatment responses are often suboptimal. Animal models play a crucial role in elucidating its neurobiological mechanisms and developing novel therapeutic approaches. This article systematically reviews two primary mouse modelling paradigms: social fear conditioning (SFC) and social defeat. The SFC model induces specific social fear behaviors by pairing a social stimulus with an aversive event, whereas the social defeat model, by simulating social conflict and psychological

Prospects for de-automatization.

Research by Raz and his associates has repeatedly found that suggestions for hypnotic agnosia, administered to highly hypnotizable subjects, reduce or even eliminate Stroop interference. The present paper sought unsuccessfully to extend these findings to negative priming in the Stroop task. Nevertheless, the reduction of Stroop interference has broad theoretical implications, both for our understanding of automaticity and for the prospect of de-automatizing cognition in meditation and other altered states of consciousness.
