The differential diagnosis of red eye: a survey of medical practitioners from Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

A survey amongst ophthalmologists and general medical practitioners from nine countries in Eastern Europe and the Middle East was conducted to estimate the percentage of patients presenting with a red eye and to examine differential diagnosis and treatment. Practitioners recorded brief details of every patient seen and detailed information concerning signs and symptoms, differential diagnosis and treatment for all patients presenting with a red eye during 20 consecutive days in the period between May and September 2004. Red eyes accounted for approximately 15% of consultations with ophthalmolo

Adult Eye Conditions: Common Eye Conditions.

In primary care practices and emergency departments, approximately 2% to 3% of visits are related to eye conditions. The most common diagnoses are corneal abrasion, corneal foreign body, conjunctivitis, external hordeolum (stye), and subconjunctival hemorrhage. This section addresses hordeolum, chalazion, conjunctivitis, corneal abrasion, and corneal foreign body. A thorough history and physical examination are crucial for patients with these conditions, and frequently are sufficient for diagnosis. Conservative therapies are first-line treatments for hordeolum and chalazion, including applicat

[Ocular symptoms and treatment of Ebola virus disease].

Ocular signs and symptoms of Ebola infection initially suggest banal conjunctivitis, but in advanced cases severe haemorrhagic conjunctivitis appears and, in the final stage of the disease, retinal and chorioidal haemorrhages may occur which can cause even blindness. Although the viral infection accompanied by ocular symptoms of a non-specific conjunctivitis, the high fever present from the onset of the disease should raise the suspicion of Ebola infection. There is no causal therapy know so far, and the only adjunctive treatment may be delivered by an ophthalmologist. Because the virus can be

Molecular epidemiology of adenovirus conjunctivitis in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between 2004 and 2007.

Viral conjunctivitis is a common, highly contagious disease often caused by adenovirus. We investigate the frequency of adenoviral conjunctivitis in the population of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between March 2004 and May 2007 and identified the predominant serotype circulating among this population. Seventy-five ocular swabs were collected from 66 patients with clinical presentation of conjunctivitis. The specimens were analyzed for detection of adenovirus (AdV) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The PCR products were further analyzed for virus typing by sequence analysis and/or heteroduplex mob

Molecular typing of conjunctivitis-causing adenoviruses in Hanoi, Vietnam from 2017 to 2019 and complete genome analysis of the most prevalent type (HAdV-8).

Adenoviral conjunctivitis is a common epidemic worldwide. In Vietnam, up to 80,000 patients are infected with adenoviral conjunctivitis annually. However, there are few investigations on the pathogenic adenoviruses that cause conjunctivitis. In total, 120 eye-swab samples were collected from patients with viral conjunctivitis symptoms in Hanoi, Vietnam from 2017 to 2019. Human adenoviruse (HAdV) was detected in 67 samples (55.83%) using polymerase chain reaction amplification of at least one of three HAdV-specific marker genes (hexon, penton, and fiber). Of the 67 HAdV samples, 46 samples coul

The RPS adeno detector for diagnosing adenoviral conjunctivitis.

PURPOSE: To compare the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the RPS Adeno Detector (Rapid Pathogen Screening Inc., South Williamsport, PA) against both viral cell culture with confirmatory immunofluorescence staining (CC-IFA) and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for diagnosing adenoviral conjunctivitis. DESIGN: Prospective, nonrandomized, masked, multicenter clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred eighty-six consecutive patients from 5 clinical centers seeking treatment within 1 week of developing a red eye and thought to have acute conjunctivitis. METHODS: The RPS Adeno Detector

Indication-prescription study for the management of conjunctivitis in a Colombian population.

PURPOSE: Conjunctivitis is one of the most common ocular pathologies. Its treatment depends on its etiology, but an excessive use of antibiotics and corticosteroids, which in many cases are contraindicated, has been described. The objective was to describe the prescription patterns of medications used to treat conjunctivitis in a Colombian population. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study on the pharmacological treatment of patients diagnosed with conjunctivitis between April 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021; based on a drug-dispensing database of approximately 8.5 million people affiliated wi

Use of Topical Steroids in Conjunctivitis: A Review of the Evidence.

PURPOSE: Conjunctivitis, or inflammation of the conjunctiva, is a common condition that can be caused by infectious (eg, bacterial or viral infections) and noninfectious (eg, allergy) etiologies. Treatment involves diagnosis of the underlying cause and use of appropriate therapies. A broad-spectrum therapy that can address multiple etiologies, and also the accompanying inflammation, would be very useful. In this review, we discuss the usefulness of topical ophthalmic corticosteroids and ophthalmic formulations that combine corticosteroids with anti-infectives/antibiotics for treating acute inf

Isolation of Coxsackievirus A24 variant from patients with hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in Cuba, 2008-2009.

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis occurred in Cuba in 2008 and 2009. OBJECTIVE: To determinate the etiological agent associated with the Cuban outbreaks of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis during 2008 and 2009. STUDY DESIGN: Conjunctival swabs and/or faecal samples from 382 patients with clinical diagnosis suggestive of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis were subject to viral culture in HEp-2 human laryngeal epidermoid carcinoma cells. Positive samples were identified by a specific Coxsackievirus A24 variant PCR and the 3C protease region of 16 isolates was sequenced

Variation in the TEK gene is not associated with asthma but with allergic conjunctivitis.

The Tie2 receptor is an important player in angiogenesis. The Tie2 mRNA and protein are abundantly expressed in the lungs and the associated pathway also has an important role in the development and function of the eye. Tie2 is encoded by the TEK gene in humans. Recently, variations in the TEK gene have been found associated with asthma. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether variations in the TEK gene influenced the susceptibility to pediatric asthma and/or associated phenotypes like GINA status, viral- or exercise-induced asthma, allergic asthma, indoor, outdoor, inhal
