Effective strategies for preventing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) are crucial to protect women from adverse reproductive consequences and to avoid substantial economic losses. To identify current PID prevention options and assess their efficacy, we conducted a literature search and examined relevant data in published reports. We organized our review by level of participation (ie, individuals, providers, and communities) and prevention (ie, primary, secondary, and tertiary). For individuals, several prevention strategies related to personal protection appear promising, but few have been app

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Sub-Saharan Africa. Total Fertility Rate of Ethiopia is 5.4 children per women, population growth rate is estimated to be 2.7% per year and contraceptive prevalence rate is only 15% while the unmet need for family planning is 34%. Overall awareness of Family Planning methods is high, at 87%. The prevalence of long acting and permanent contraceptive methods (LAPMs) in Tigray region was very low which accounts for 0.1% for implants and no users for intra-uterine contraceptive device (IUCD) and female sterilization. Moreover almost all m

BACKGROUND: The explicit use of theory in research helps expand the knowledge base. Theories and models have been used extensively in HIV-prevention research and in interventions for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The health behavior field uses many theories or models of change. However, educational interventions addressing contraception often have no stated theoretical base.
OBJECTIVES: Review randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that tested a theoretical approach to inform contraceptive choice; encourage contraceptive use; or promote adherence to, or continuation of, a co

Abnormalities of cervical mucus can have a bearing on a woman's fertility. One means of detecting the presence of such abnormalities is the postcoital test (PCT). As part of a population-based case control study of risk factors for infertility, the reproductive, contraceptive, medical, and sexual histories of women seeking treatment for infertility who had abnormal PCT results were compared with those of fertile controls. A greater proportion of infertile women with an abnormal PCT had previously used a diaphragm than had control women (relative risk (RR) = 3.5, 95% CI = 1.1-11.3). The excess

Postcoital tests (PCTs) have been used for over a century in the clinical evaluation of infertile couples, and for nearly 70 years in the evaluation of new vaginal contraceptive products. PCTs have been largely replaced by more modern methods in the study of infertility, but they remain the most useful way to obtain preliminary data on the effectiveness of vaginal contraceptive products. The World Health Organization has described important aspects of the procedure. It involves collection of cervical mucus at a certain time point after intercourse and the counting and characterization of sperm

In order to update current knowledge on contraceptive use and attitudes in Great Britain (i.e. England, Scotland and Wales), a survey was conducted among 1753 randomly selected British women aged 15-45. Replies were received from 967 women (55.2%). Seventy-three percent (73%) of fertile, sexually active women who wished to avoid pregnancy were using reliable methods of contraception, viz. oral contraceptives (OCs), intrauterine devices (IUDs) or sterilization. However, it was found that adolescents and women over 40 who wished to avoid pregnancy were, nevertheless, especially likely not to be

To identify risk factors for HIV infection among women not known to be members of high-risk groups in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, and assess associations between contraceptive use and HIV infection, we conducted a cross-sectional case-control study at three representative family planning clinics. Between February 1991 and June 1992, we enrolled 2,285 women; women were interviewed using a structured questionnaire, and specimens were collected for laboratory diagnosis of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The overall HIV prevalence was 11.5% (95% CI: 10.2-12.8). Other prevalent STD

A prospective study using two brands of condoms found that of 405 condoms used for intercourse, 7.9% either broke during intercourse or withdrawal or slipped off during intercourse; none of these events were related to condom brand, past condom use or use of additional lubricant. Of the remaining condoms, 7.2% slipped off during withdrawal; slippage was not related to condom brand or past use of condoms, but it was significantly higher when additional lubricant was used.

In the 1972-74 Isfahan Model Family Planning Project, which grew out of previous family planning projects in Isfahan, contraceptive education and services were provided by private doctors, family planning clinics, health centers, nurses, midwives, full-time field-workers, functionaries, and the mass media on a comprehensive and integrated basis. The percent of married women aged 15-44 using modern methods rose from 6 percent to 21 percent by the end of the project period. Continuation rates for the pill and IUD were comparable to those in other, more urban programs. Field-workers proved to be

A group of 25 women who had had two or more therapeutic abortions was compared with a control group of 100 women who had had only one abortion. The two groups could not be distinguished on the basis of the available demographic data. Emotional problems that interfere with the proper utilization of contraceptives were apparent in the index group and 76% of patients in this group had a primary psychiatric disorder as compared with 52% in the control group. The most common psychiatric diagnosis in the index group was chronic depressive reaction. A therapeutic abortion in the index group did not p

OBJECTIVES: The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is an underused contraceptive method in sub-Saharan Africa. A recent market assessment in Kenya found that if a more affordable version of the method were available it may increase demand and uptake of the method. We therefore aimed to examine attitudes and perceptions around the LNG-IUS and experiences of method use, including exploring attributes such as bleeding changes, contraceptive-related amenorrhoea and perceived non-contraceptive benefits.
METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted among 29 women who were curr

The barrier class of contraceptives used either alone or with supplementary spermicidal agents includes the most ancient of methods for the control of human fertility. Modern innovations have effected marked improvement in their efficacy and acceptability, so that they have become key means of controlling fertility in the world today. The traditional diaphragms and condoms decreased in popularity to some extent when methods such as the OCs and IUDs became available for general use. However, the plain or medicated barriers are regaining their rightful position in our contraceptive armamentarium
