Impact of schedule V controlled substance classification of gabapentin on adult gabapentin-involved overdose rates, West Virginia, 2016-2019: A controlled time series analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Assess the association between West Virginia's classification of gabapentin as a schedule V controlled substance and fatal overdoses involving gabapentin, relative to a control state. METHODS: Using a controlled interrupted time series design, we modeled a segmented linear regression using Newey-West standard errors to estimate the immediate and trend changes in gabapentin-involved fatal overdoses among adults in West Virginia associated with gabapentin's scheduling in June 2018. Data from North Carolina (no gabapentin scheduling) was used as a control to account for potential secu

Protocol for a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of inhibitory control training for aggressive behaviours among individuals with co-occurring substance use disorder and gambling behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Aggression, substance use, and gambling behaviour often co-occur in a larger pattern of dysregulated behaviour. One of the factors that may underlie this phenomenon is impaired inhibitory control. Inhibitory Control Training (ICT) is an alternative intervention being tested for addressing addictive behaviours by targeting inhibitory control. Given the shared underlying mechanisms of these behaviours, applying ICT to aggression represents a possible extension of this intervention. This research will mark the first implementation of a cognitive bias modification approach to managing

Association of emerging alternatives to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances with polycystic ovary syndrome among Chinese women: a case-control study.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been previously associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, the health effects of emerging PFAS alternatives on PCOS remain unclear. This study aims to examine the associations between exposure to emerging PFAS alternatives and the odds of PCOS, while also exploring the combined effects of PFAS mixture exposure. From 2019 to 2024, we conducted a case-control study in Jiangsu Province, China, including 94 women diagnosed with PCOS and 81 healthy controls. Serum concentrations of 25 PFAS were quantified using liquid chromatography-ta

PPARs, L-FABP mediate the association between Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and gestational diabetes: a nested case-control study.

To analyze the correlation between PFASs exposure and glucose metabolic indexes in relation to GDM risk, and to explore the mediating role of PPARs and L-FABP. Using a nested case–control study method. Blood specimens were collected during early pregnancy for quantification of PFASs, PPARs, and L-FABP. LASSO was used to select PFASs, and the selected variables were subsequently included in WQS and QGComp to analyze the relationship between PFASs and GDM. Four-way decomposition analysis and chain mediation model examined PPARs and L-FABP mediation in the PFAS-GDM association. A total of 1680 pr

Healthy lifestyle modifies the association between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and hyperlipidemia: A propensity score-matched case-control study.

The impact of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on hyperlipidemia and the potential modifying role of overall lifestyle remain underexplored. We examined six serum PFAS and a composite lifestyle score among 192 propensity score-matched case-control pairs. Individual and joint associations were evaluated using conditional logistic regression, quantile g-computation, and Bayesian kernel machine regression. A composite healthy lifestyle score was constructed based on smoking, alcohol drinking, physical activity, body shape, and diet. Per interquartile range (IQR) increase in ln-transform

Individual and combined effects of maternal per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances exposure on preterm birth: a nested case-control study in China.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of synthetic chemicals with ubiquitous human exposure. Maternal PFAS exposure has been linked with adverse birth outcomes, but their associations with preterm birth (PTB) remained ambiguous. METHODS: To assess the associations of individual and mixed PFAS exposure with preterm birth (PTB) and its subtypes (spontaneous and iatrogenic), a nested case-control study involving 177 PTB cases and 531 controls was conducted in Shanghai, China. Serum concentration of seven PFAS were measured in early pregnancy via ultrahigh-perfor

Targeting cravings in substance addiction with transcranial direct current stimulation: insights from a meta-analysis of sham-controlled trials.

Addiction is a substantial health concern; craving-the core symptom of addiction-is strongly associated with relapse. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique that reduces cravings by altering cortical excitability and connectivity in brain regions. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted (following the PRISMA guidelines) to evaluate the efficacy of tDCS in reducing cravings for substances. Our analysis included 43 randomized, sham-controlled trials involving 1,095 and 913 participants receiving tDCS and sham stimulation, respec

An examination of reciprocal associations between substance use and effortful control across adolescence using a bifactor model of externalizing symptoms.

Early adolescence is thought to represent a window of vulnerability when exposure to substances is particularly harmful, partly because the neurotoxic effects of adolescent substance use may derail self-regulation development. However, previous studies fail to account for externalizing symptoms, such as aggression and delinquency, that accompany adolescent substance use and may also derail the development of self-regulation. The current study aims to clarify whether the neurotoxic effects of adolescent substance use are associated with deficits in effortful control (EC) after accounting for ex

Associations between the CADM2 gene, substance use, risky sexual behavior, and self-control: A phenome-wide association study.

Risky behaviors, such as substance use and unprotected sex, are associated with various physical and mental health problems. Recent genome-wide association studies indicated that variation in the cell adhesion molecule 2 (CADM2) gene plays a role in risky behaviors and self-control. In this phenome-wide scan for risky behavior, it was tested if underlying common vulnerability could be (partly) explained by pleiotropic effects of this gene and how large the effects were. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-level and gene-level association tests within four samples (25 and Up, Spit for Science,

The efficacy of behavioural activation treatment for co-occurring depression and substance use disorder (the activate study): a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies suggest that compared with the general population, mood disorders are up to 4.7 times more prevalent in substance dependent samples. Comorbid substance use disorder (SUD) and depression has been associated with a more severe and protracted illness course and poorer treatment outcomes. Despite this, the development and assessment of behavioural interventions for treating depression among individuals with SUDs have received little empirical attention. Behavioural Activation Treatment for Depression (BATD-R) is an empirically supported treatment for depression

Addressing the burden of mental, neurological, and substance use disorders: key messages from Disease Control Priorities, 3rd edition.

The burden of mental, neurological, and substance use (MNS) disorders increased by 41% between 1990 and 2010 and now accounts for one in every 10 lost years of health globally. This sobering statistic does not take into account the substantial excess mortality associated with these disorders or the social and economic consequences of MNS disorders on affected persons, their caregivers, and society. A wide variety of effective interventions, including drugs, psychological treatments, and social interventions, can prevent and treat MNS disorders. At the population-level platform of service deliv
