Thirty-nine mentally normal unrelated children diagnosed as having febrile convulsions were included in this study. The following have been carried out: (a) detailed anamnesis and clinical examination; (b) cerebrospinal fluid investigation; (c) EEG examination between attacks; (d) HLA-antigen determination; (e) estimation of serum IgA, IgG, IgM; and (f) counting of percent spontaneous E-rosette formation. The results were statistically compared to normal Egyptian controls. The results could be summarised as follows. (1) Only HLA-B5 antigen frequency is high among patients (chi 2c = 19.1, P les

An analysis of the clinical features of patients having evidence of a syncopal onset to convulsive episodes is reported. The range of convulsive phenomena was quite wide and did not appear to differentiate the syndrome from primary epilepsy in terms of seizure morphology, occurrence of incontinence or pattern of post-ictal recovery. It is therefore suggested that the premonitory and precipitating features are more specific in the diagnosis of convulsive syncope. Skin pallor was often reported during attacks. Although EEG abnormalities were seen in some cases, the follow-up results indicate a l

We report the data of 878 selected children between 1 month and 6 years, presenting a first episode of seizure with fever. Two-hundred-fifty-five children underwent lumbar puncture. In 7 cases the CSF findings showed a bacterial meningitis, in 14 cases a viral meningitis. In 598 of the 623 children who did not undergo LP, a bacterial meningitis could be excluded on the basis of the clinical course. The data show that the probability of finding a bacterial or viral meningitis is high in children under 6 months of age even if no significant neurological signs are found on examination performed s

The newborn with seizures should be treated urgently, because of the high risk of consequent brain damage. In addition to general management in order to correct metabolic and functional unbalancement, associated with the fits, specific causes of neonatal seizures (hypoglicemia, hypocalcemia, hypomagnesiemia, hypo-hypernatremia, pyridoxine deficiency) should be immediately removed. If neonatal seizures depend on other non specific causes (anoxia, cerebral hemorrhagy, malformation, infection or other, a symptomatic anticonvulsant treatment should be carried out without delay. Useful drugs for th

In a patient with primary hypoparathyroidism the disease ran for years only generalized convulsions resistant to antiepileptic medication, and was lately complicated by bilateral cataracts. Low serum calcium and elevated serum phosphorus found on occasion of a grand mal status resistant to routine treatment and to intravenous barbiturates revealed the correct diagnosis. The seizures have been suppressed by normalyzing the serum calcium levels. The pathophysiology of convulsive seizures during hypocalcemia is discussed, and the possibility is raised that antiepileptic drugs could have contribut
