Wheat bran could be utilised as feedstock for innovative and sustainable biorefinery processes. Here, an enzymatic hydrolysis process for ferulic acid (FA) extraction was optimised step by step for total wheat bran (Tritello) and then also applied to the outer bran layer (Bran 1). Proteins, reducing sugars, total phenols and FA were quantified. The highest FA yields (0.82-1.05 g/kg bran) were obtained either by rehydrating the bran by autoclaving (Tritello) or by steam explosion (Bran 1) using a bran/water ratio of 1:20, followed by enzymatic pre-treatment with Alcalase and Termamyl, to remove

Snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs) participate in a number of important biological, physiological and pathophysiological processes and are primarily responsible for the local tissue damage characteristic of viperid snake envenomations. The use of medicinal plant extracts as antidotes against animal venoms is an old practice, especially against snake envenomations. Such plants are sources of many pharmacologically active compounds and have been shown to antagonize the effects of some venoms and toxins. The present study explores the activity of triacontyl p-coumarate (PCT), an active compou

Malpighia mexicana has been traditionally used in Mexican ethnomedicine for the treatment of central nervous systems disorders. Previous studies have demonstrated neuropharmacological activity of crude extracts, but the contribution of enriched phytochemical fractions remains unclear. A phenolic-enriched fraction (G4) obtained from the aerial parts of M. mexicana was evaluated for antidepressant-like and anticonvulsant activities in mice. Antidepressant-like effects were assessed using the forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST), while locomotor activity was evaluated in the

Accumulation of phenolic compounds in cell walls of different plant organs leading to increased lignification is an early defence response of plants against biotic stress. The aim of this work was to delineate occurrence of cell wall-bound (CWB) phenolic compounds in Morinda citrifolia leaves. Alkaline hydrolysis of the cell wall material of leaf tissues yielded 4-coumaric acid (4-CA) as the major bulk of the phenolic compounds in all Morinda germplasms. Next in line was 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. Other phenolics identified were vanillic acid, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, vanillin and ferulic acid. Conc

The shortage of effective chemotherapeutic agents poses a significant challenge to the global public health system. Cancer is among the leading diseases affecting the human population worldwide. Issues such as drug resistance, toxicity, lack of specificity, poor bioavailability and water solubility, and severe side effects reduce the effectiveness of many existing anticancer drugs. As a result, there is growing interest in discovering a new generation of therapeutic agents to overcome these limitations. Phenolic acids, including ferulic and caffeic acids, are cinnamic acid derivatives with num

The important cereal pathogen Fusarium graminearum is not only able to produce trichothecene toxins, like deoxynivalenol, but also the plant hormone auxin (indole-3-acetic acid, IAA). Highly elevated levels of IAA and auxin derivatives such as IAA-glucoside or IAA amino-acid conjugates were observed in the susceptible wheat cultivar Apogee infected with F. graminearum. We report here that the fungal pathogen can hydrolyse tryptamine-derived hydroxycinnamic acid amides produced in high amounts during plant defence and is able to convert the released tryptamine in high yield into IAA. We investi

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing greener and safer substances for the control of postharvest fungal diseases of fruit. Secondary metabolic pathways play an important role in plant defense responses, and the phenylpropanoid metabolic pathway is one of the most important secondary metabolic pathways in plant defense. More and more studies have shown that exogenous phenylpropanoids treatments can inhibit postharvest fungal diseases. On the one hand, these biologically active phenylpropanoids are fungistatic and can act directly on the fungal cells infesting the pos
