Assessing the Impact of Weeds on Rice Growth and Productivity: Experimental Designs and Quantitative Approaches.

Weeds represent one of the most critical biotic stress factors in rice-based cropping systems, often causing severe yield losses. Understanding crop-weed interactions under both current and projected climate change scenarios is essential for safeguarding rice productivity. Weed species, such as Echinochloa colona and Alternanthera paronychioides, exert profound competitive effects on rice, with early crop growth stages being particularly vulnerable. During this period, rice seedlings encounter simultaneous challenges of weed interference and abiotic stresses, such as water limitation, resultin

Pollinator Dependency and Regional Climate Affect Crop Yield Development Under Climate Change.

Climate change is severely impacting insects and flowering plants in different ways. While effects on plants, pollinators and their interactions have been amply discussed, subsequent impacts on pollination are rarely assessed. Understanding climate-change effects on pollination is particularly important for insect-pollinated crops as it ultimately influences yield and hence food production. This study investigated crop-yield changes over 35 years in two climatically distinct regions in Germany (cool-moist vs. warm-dry). Yield differences among crops showing different levels of pollinator depen

Effects of Increasing CO2 Concentration on Crop Growth and Soil Ammonia-Oxidizing Microorganisms in a Fababean (Vicia faba L.) and Wheat (Triticum aestivum Yunmai) Intercropping System.

Elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2) levels can enhance crop yields but may simultaneously reduce quality, impacting both macronutrient and micronutrient concentrations, and potentially decreasing protein content in cereal grains. This study examined the effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2) and nitrogen (N) fertilization on crop growth, yield, and soil nitrogen cycling through a glass greenhouse experiment using Eutric Regosol soil. The experimental design incorporated two CO2 gradients: ambient CO2 (aCO2) at approximately 410 ppm during the day and 460 ppm at night, and eCO2 at approximately 550 ppm duri

Performance and cross-crop resistance of Cry1F-maize selected Spodoptera frugiperda on transgenic Bt cotton: implications for resistance management.

Transgenic crops producing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins have become a primary tool in pest management. Due to the intensive use of Bt crops, resistance of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, to Cry1F maize has occurred in Puerto Rico, Brazil, and some areas of the southeastern U.S. The sustainability of Bt crops faces a great challenge because the Cry1F-maize resistant S. frugiperda may also infest other Bt crops in multiple cropping ecosystems. Here we examined the survival and plant injury of a S. frugiperda population selected with Cry1F maize on three single-gene and five pyr

Epigenetic Control of Cold Stress Tolerance in Plants: Emerging Mechanisms and Applications for Crop Improvement.

Low temperature is an abiotic stress factor that affects plant development and geographic expansion, resulting in significant economic losses in worldwide food production each year. Through evolution, plants have developed intricate adaptation systems, with epigenetic regulation-modifying gene expression without altering DNA sequences-being pivotal in the cold stress response and memory formation. This review provides a systematic overview of the role of the main epigenetic mechanisms, including histone modifications, DNA methylation, non-coding RNA regulation, and chromatin remodeling, in pla

A multimodal geospatial foundation model anticipates crop stress and yield failure across climates and species.

INTRODUCTION: Climate extremes increasingly threaten agricultural production, yet many artificial intelligence systems in agriculture remain local, reactive and narrowly trained for one crop, region or sensing modality. METHODS: We present AgriFM, a multimodal geospatial foundation model that combines satellite image time series, radar, thermal observations, weather trajectories, soil properties, topography and sparse management variables to estimate crop-stress and yield-failure risk across crops and regions. AgriFM was pretrained using self-supervised objectives on 2.4 million field-season

Respiratory symptoms of obstructive lung disease in European crop farmers.

Crop farming as a risk factor for respiratory symptoms of obstructive lung disease was assessed. Random samples of crop farmers from four European countries were studied following a cross-sectional design. A questionnaire on respiratory symptoms and occupation was administered to determine prevalences, and the roles of the various crops as risk factors for respiratory symptoms were assessed through logistic regression modeling. The 4,793 crop farmers included in the study (response rate: 85.3%) reported the following respiratory symptoms: wheezing (14.9%), asthma (3.3%), nasal allergy (14.4%),

A new vector-based framework combining AquaCrop, CROPWAT, WEAP, and multi-objective programming for optimizing crop allocation under water scarcity.

Effective crop land-use allocation requires evaluating both the potential of land units and the demand for various crops to identify optimal strategies. This paper presents a new vector-based framework that combines AquaCrop for crop-water requirement estimation, CROPWAT for reference evapotranspiration, GAMS for multi-objective optimization, and WEAP for basin-level water allocation. The model operates directly on agricultural-plot polygons to enable spatially explicit optimization that balances agricultural income and production costs. The model’s plausibility for real-world planning was val

Unpacking the Trade-Offs: A Meta-Analysis of Soil Fertility, Crop Yield, and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Across Fertilizer Types (Organic, Mineral) and Cropping Systems.

Different strategies are used in organic and conventional cultivation, which can significantly influence crop yield, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and soil quality. However, the relative efficiency of these fertilization practices has not been systematically compared. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of organic, conventional, and semi-organic fertilization systems on soil properties, crop productivity, and GHG emissions through a comprehensive meta-analysis. The analysis showed that conventional systems had the highest increase in nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions (+62%),

Modern Strategies for the Diversification of the Supply of Natural Compounds: The Case of Alkaloid Painkillers.

Plant-derived natural compounds have been used for treating diseases since prehistorical times. The supply of many plant-derived natural compounds for medicinal purposes, such as thebaine, morphine, and codeine, is primarily dependent on opium poppy crop harvesting. This dependency adds an extra risk factor to ensuring the supply chain because crops are highly susceptible to environmental conditions. Emerging technologies, such as biocatalysis, might help to solve this problem by diversifying the sources of supply of these compounds. Here we review the first committed step in the production of

Constraints in cropping heavy-metal contaminated fluvial sediments.

Growth and heavy-metal uptake of various food crops and grass cultivated on harbour dredge spoils were studied, and health aspects in consuming the marketable products were discussed. Vegetables (potato, carrot, radish, endive, lettuce) and grass (English ryegrass) performed well on dredge spoils, but small grains (wheat, barley) were affected by manganese deficiency. As compared with crops grown on uncontaminated reference soils, there was a net accumulation of As and heavy metals, especially so Cd, Zn and Cu, and a reduced uptake of Mn. Mainly because of the elevated Cd concentrations of the

An AI-Driven Multimodal Sensing Framework Integrating UAV Imagery and Environmental Sensors for Intelligent Farmland Monitoring.

The utilization of multi-source sensing data to achieve intelligent perception and refined management of farmland has become a vital research direction in modern agriculture. However, traditional inspection approaches based solely on visual information are highly susceptible to illumination variations, occlusion, and background interference, which makes stable pest detection and accurate crop growth assessment difficult to achieve. To address these problems, we propose a multimodal target perception network for intelligent farmland inspection. By integrating UAV imagery, ground environmental s

Evaluating crop options for managing rabbit populations: triticale exhibits lower herbivory than traditional cereals.

The European rabbit is a key species in Mediterranean ecosystems, yet its populations show contrasting trends: despite broad declines, some areas now sustain very high densities that cause crop damage. Conventional control methods, including hunting, have proven insufficient. As a complementary strategy, cultivating less palatable cereals may reduce crop losses while limiting food availability for rabbits, and, in turn, curbing further population growth. Triticale (x Triticosecale) has been proposed as resistant to rabbit herbivory, but its effectiveness remains unquantified. To quantify its r

Tree grafting: an introspection with reference to breeding, production and productivity in Hevea brasiliensis.

Grafting has transformed the propagation and productivity of perennial tree crops, but genetically variable rootstocks and functional stock-scion interactions can limit the uniform expression of elite scion potential. Evidence from Hevea brasiliensis highlights the need for compatible and uniform rootstocks, self-rooted planting material, and emerging graft assisted biotechnological approaches to improve plantation uniformity and productivity. Due to high heterozygosity and difficulty in fixing desirable traits, grafting has long been the preferred method of propagation in many perennial crops

Biocontrol of mushroom crop mycoparasites by novel Bacillus velezensis strains.

The cultivation of button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) requires the design of tailor-made substrates that nourish the crop and promote morphology changes from mycelium to basidiome. The agronomic stages of mushroom development are also influenced by the microbiota present in the mushroom crop microcosm. These microbes can have a beneficial impact on mushroom growth, development and quality, or a detrimental impact through reduction of yield or quality (parasites, competitors or disease vectors). In this report, we describe the isolation of multiple strains of Bacillus velezensis from mushroom

Agricultural pesticides and veterinary substances in Uruguayan beeswax.

Over the last decade, Uruguay has expanded and intensified its rainfed crop production. This process has affected beekeeping in several ways: for example, by reducing the space available. This has increased the density of apiaries, the risk of varroosis and acaricide use. Additionally, the dominance of no-tillage crops has increased the frequencies of application and of loads of pesticides in regions where such crops share the land with beekeeping and honey production. Therefore, the exposure of bees to xenobiotics (agricultural pesticides and veterinary products) has increased in line with po…

Integrating molecular networks and physiological adaptation for heat-resilient crops.

As global temperatures increase, heat stress has become a key limiting factor affecting crop yield and quality. Against the backdrop of growing global food demand and increasingly frequent extreme high-temperature events, this dual pressure poses a threat to global food security. This review systematically analyzes the physiological effects of heat on major crops, focusing on source-sink relationships and nutrient transport processes. We summarize key heat-related genes identified in these crops through forward and reverse genetic approaches, elucidating the mechanisms underlying heat signal p
