Creative arts therapies for stroke patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability and mortality worldwide. Survivors can experience a range of physical and emotional challenges, often leading to depression, anxiety, and a poorer quality of life. Creative arts therapies (CATs), an umbrella term encompassing music, art, dance/movement, drama, and creative writing therapies, have increasingly been explored in stroke survivor populations as interventions to improve psychological outcomes. Qualitative analysis suggests these therapies can be helpful, but the exact efficacy of CATs in stroke rehabilitation, as well a

Inherent commonalities between arts-based leisure activities and psychological therapies.

Prevalences of anxiety, depression, and related mental health difficulties continue to rise across many high-income countries, while existing treatment services face growing pressures and limited capacity. Alongside formal psychological and pharmacological interventions, everyday behaviours that support mental health resilience warrant greater attention. An expanding evidence base shows that arts-based leisure activities-including participating in music, visual arts, dance, creative writing, and visiting cultural venues and performances-can produce meaningful psychological benefits for people

Can exercise prevent cognitive decline?

As the tolerability of pharmacological agents decreases with age, exercise may be particularly helpful as a possible treatment or stabiliser of mood and cognitive function in older age. Exercise has been most commonly evaluated for the treatment of depression. Exercise interventions designed primarily for treatment of physical conditions in the elderly do appear to confer psychological benefits as well, with reduction in depressive symptoms over the course of treatment. The effects of exercise on reducing depressive symptoms are not dissimilar to the effects of antidepressant drugs and cogniti

Factors Associated with Patient Interest in a Digital Exercise and Mind-Body Program for Patients Undergoing Active Cancer Treatment: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

Background/Objectives: As digital health interventions gain traction in oncology care, understanding factors influencing patient participation is critical to optimizing delivery and enhancing symptom management. Sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with patient interest in a 12-week digital exercise and mind-body program among patients undergoing cancer treatment were examined. Methods: A secondary analysis of the IMPROVE trial was conducted. This trial evaluated the effects of Integrative Medicine at Home (IM@Home) versus enhanced usual care on fatigue among adults with breast, th

[Evidence-based treatments in the rehabilitation of patients with depression--a literature review].

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the importance of guidelines has increased continuously. This development also occurs in the field of rehabilitative health care, where process guidelines are being designed for various indicational groups to ensure quality standards and improvements. AIM: The primary goal of this paper is to collect and evaluate the evidence for various treatment options for depressive disorders in order to establish a basis for the current development of a process guideline for the rehabilitation of patients with depressive disorders. METHOD: In order to identify evidence based

An isokinetic training program for reducing falls in a community-dwelling older adult: a case report.

BACKGROUND: With the population older than 65 years, projected to double by the year 2030, falls in older adults are a substantial health concern. Muscle strength deficits are one of the multifactorial components linked to increased fall risk, and decreasing these deficits has been one of the goals of interventions designed to decrease fall risk. These interventions have traditionally focused on improving peak torque; however, recent research suggests that exercise protocols that focus on the rate of torque development (RTD) may be more effective in decreasing fall risk. PURPOSE: This case re

Physical activity in the management of borderline personality disorder: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) affects 1-2 % of the population and poses significant health challenges. Individuals with BPD face a reduced life expectancy of 14-27 years, primarily due to suicide and cardiovascular-related issues. This scoping review aimed to provide an overview of the existing literature on physical activity (PA) in BPD management, focusing on research characteristics and exploring underlying rationales. METHODS: The PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, PEDro and Cochrane databases were searched for both unpublished and published studies from 1980

BACKGROUND: : Institutional physiotherapy as a standard of care for management of cerebral palsy (CP) has certain shortcomings, especially in resource-constrained settings. This is a proof-of-concept trial to evaluate the efficacy of individualized home-centered activity-based therapy in children with spastic diplegic CP. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial (open-label). SETTINGS: Tertiary-care hospital with pediatric neurology services (July, 2014 to July, 2016). Acupuncture acupoints of spine and lower limb for pediatric backbend-induced thoracic spinal cord injury: Four case reports and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Backbend-induced pediatric thoracic spinal cord injury without radiologic abnormality (BBPT-SCIWORA) in children is rare in clinical practice and leads to lower limb motor dysfunction. There are few clinical studies on BBPT-SCIWORA and even fewer on treatments for BBPT-SCIWORA-induced lower limb motor dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: To explore the therapeutic effect of acupuncture at bilateral spine acupoints combined with lower limb acupoints in BBPT-SCIWORA. CASE PRESENTATION: This study reported four cases of BBPT-SCIWORA after dancing, two of which received a unique medium-frequency

Dancing for balance: feasibility and efficacy in oldest-old adults with visual impairment.

BACKGROUND: Fall risk increases with age and visual impairment, yet the oldest-old adults (>85 years) are rarely studied. Partnered dance improves mobility, balance, and quality of life in older individuals with movement impairment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the feasibility and participant satisfaction of an adapted tango program amongst these oldest-old adults with visual impairment. Exploratory analyses were conducted to determine efficacy of the program in improving balance and gait. METHODS: In a repeated-measures, one-group experimental design, 13 older adults (7

Comparative efficacy of mind-body exercise for depression in breast cancer survivors: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: As pharmacotherapy often leads to adverse reactions, mind-body exercise (MBE) treatments have become a more popular option for treating depression in people living with breast cancer (BC). However, the most effective type of MBE treatment for this population remains unclear. AIMS: The aim of this systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) was to compare the efficacy of the different MBE modes for depression in people with BC. METHODS: A systematic search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from inception to March 25, 2023, was conducted in the following database: EMBAS

Psychogenic movement disorders in children and adolescents: an update.

This short communication provides an update on childhood psychogenic movement disorders (PMD), focusing on descriptive studies and case reports from 2008 to 2018. Known also as functional movement/motor disorders, PMD diagnoses are relatively common in adults but less so in children. In group studies over the past decade, sample prevalence of childhood PMD ranged from 2.8 to 23.1%, with a higher percentage of girls in most studies (consistent with adult PMD literature). Common types of PMD included tremor (32.4%), dystonia (29.5%), and myoclonus (24.3%). Precipitating events for PMD onset incl

Hyperventilation and exhaustion syndrome.

Chronic stress is among the most common diagnoses in Sweden, most commonly in the form of exhaustion syndrome (ICD-10 classification - F43.8). The majority of patients with this syndrome also have disturbed breathing (hyperventilation). The aim of this study was to investigate the association between hyperventilation and exhaustion syndrome. Thirty patients with exhaustion syndrome and 14 healthy subjects were evaluated with the Nijmegen Symptom Questionnaire (NQ). The participants completed questionnaires about exhaustion, mental state, sleep disturbance, pain and quality of life. The evaluat
