Work and non-pathological gambling.

Most economists believe that people would value an additional $1,000 in income more if they were poor than if rich, but if so, people should not gamble according to standard expected utility theory. Thus, economists have been challenged to explain the pervasiveness of gambling in human behavior. A recently proposed solution to this theoretical challenge (Nyman 2004; Nyman et al. in Journal of Socio-Economics 37:2492-2504, 2008) suggests that, because having to work for one's income is a fact of life in market economies, many individuals view the winnings from gambling not only as additional in

Info-gap management of public health Policy for TB with HIV-prevalence and epidemiological uncertainty.

BACKGROUND: Formulation and evaluation of public health policy commonly employs science-based mathematical models. For instance, epidemiolog … tainties on model parameters are extreme. When a public health model underlies guidelines, info-gap decision theory provides valuable insight into the confidence of achieving agreed-upon goals.

Cognitive distortions as a component and treatment focus of pathological gambling: a review.

The literature on the role of cognitive distortions in the understanding and treatment of pathological gambling (PG) is reviewed, with sections focusing on (a) conceptual underpinnings of cognitive distortions, (b) cognitive distortions related to PG, (c) PG therapies that target cognitive distortions, (d) methodological factors and outcome variations, and (e) conclusions and prescriptive recommendations. The conceptual background for distortions related to PG lies in the program of heuristics and biases (Kahneman & Tversky, 1974) as well as other errors identified in basic psychology. The lit

Structured decision-making as a framework to incorporate social equity into conservation decisions.

Many conservation challenges require negotiating trade-offs between the needs of different actors. Global frameworks such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework explicitly call for diverse participation and social equity in conservation decision-making. Achieving this requires integrating equity into both decisions and decision-making processes. Despite shifts toward strengthening social equity, practical guidance for incorporating equity into conservation decision-making processes remains limited. We argue that structured decision-making (SDM), an organized approach designed fo

Tinnitus and cognition: Can load theory help us refine our understanding?

Objective: Tinnitus has been shown to be associated with specific cognitive deficits. Contemporary models of tinnitus, based primarily on human behavior, emphasize the influence of the cognitive response to tinnitus in tinnitus manifestation and level of associated annoyance. The models and hypotheses proposed thus far have (a) focused on the cognitive response to the onset of tinnitus, and not necessarily focused on the cognitive consequences of established chronic tinnitus, and (b) failed to dissociate the contributions of cognitive and perceptual load in their theories. Load theory states t

Thus, AI-assiste … on of CNNs to a "black box", making their decision process difficult to understand by a non-expert. Decision theory, especially game theory, is a potential solution as it focuses on identifying the best decision option that maximizes the decision-maker's expected utility. The Relative Operating Characteristic in Psychology: A technique for isolating effects of response bias finds wide use in the study of perception and cognition.

The clinician looking, listening, or feeling for signs of a disease may far prefer a false alarm to a miss, particularly if the disease is s … he acuity of discrimination per se. The ROC is an analytical technique, with origins in statistical decision theory and electronic detection theory, that quite effectively isolates the effects of the observer's response bias, or decision criterion, in the study of discrimination behavior. This capability, pursued through a century of psychological testing, provid …

Becoming a mother: Supported decision-making in context.

Little is known about how women with intellectual disabilities make decisions in relation to pregnancy. Social support is important for mothers with intellectual disabilities in many areas. This study explored how the support network influenced the decision-making of women with intellectual disabilities in relation to pregnancy. The study extended previous research to include the multiple perspectives of mothers, personal and professional support network. A model of decision-making was constructed, with implications of how services approach working with mothers with intellectual disabilities.

Potential mechanisms contributing to decision-making difficulties in late adulthood.

This paper critiques Brand and Markowitsch's viewpoint that the decision-making difficulties experienced by older adults during laboratory-based gambling tasks can be attributed to deficits in executive control and feedback operations. While Brand and Markowitsch provide an important platform with which to understand the role of these specific component processes, there are other additional mechanisms that also seem likely to be important when understanding gambling decisions in late adulthood. We focus on several of these mechanisms, and in particular, the manner in which decision-relevant in

Integrating menopausal neurocognitive and psychosocial dynamics into economic behavior: the Behavioral Finance-Menopausal Cognition (BF-MC) Model (MARiE WP2A study).

OBJECTIVE: Traditional behavioral finance-which examines how cognitive biases, emotions, and context shape economic decision-making- often assumes cognitive stability, rationality, and consistent risk evaluation, based largely on male-dominated samples. Emerging evidence from the Menopause and Ageing Research in International Environments (MARIE) WP2a program, encompassing over 6,300 women across thirteen countries, suggests that the menopause transition brings about significant neurocognitive, emotional, and sociostructural changes that may influence financial decision-making processes. These

Identifying factors that underpin student decisions to pursue the Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Atlantic Canadian Universities: Protocol for a mixed methods study.

Several international studies have investigated academic decision-making in higher education, but there is limited research on students' choice to study pharmacy in the Canadian context. While there is some variation across jurisdictions, decisions to enroll in a particular degree program fall into several decision-making domains (e.g., personal, family, institutional, social, and economic). These findings have been theorized in various ways, for example, through social cognitive theory and social reproduction theory. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the personal,

Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing: A Treatment Strategy for Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

Purpose The purpose of this article is to describe a treatment approach, Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), and to provide clinicians and clinical researchers a clear understanding of the theory and principles that contributed to the design of the treatment as well as the clinical decisions that must be made when implementing it. While brief descriptions of DTTC have been provided in textbooks, a complete summary of the rationale, essential elements, method, and procedures has not yet been published. Such a summary is important so that clinicians can gain a better understanding of and

Role of experience and context in learning to diagnose Lyme disease.

INTRODUCTION: A recent review of research in continuing medical education suggests that scholarship should be integrated with practice so that practical problems can be addressed with theoretically derived yet applicable solutions. This project develops a theory describing how physicians learn and formulate decisions in the context of diagnosing Lyme disease in order that educational programs can be designed to improve accuracy in diagnosis of this disease. METHODS: A qualitative study using grounded theory methodology was performed to explore the learning process of physicians when diagnosin

Should physicians be bayesian agents?

Because physicians use scientific inference for the generalizations of individual observations and the application of general knowledge to particular situations, the Bayesian probability solution to the problem of induction has been proposed and frequently utilized. Several problems with the Bayesian approach are introduced and discussed. These include: subjectivity, the favoring of a weak hypothesis, the problem of the false hypothesis, the old evidence/new theory problem and the observation that physicians are not currently Bayesians. To the complaint that the prior probability is subjective

Choosing well: A narrative review on chronic pain and decision-making.

Chronic pain is one of the most prevalent and costly health conditions in the United States. Previous work has demonstrated that chronic pain impacts cognition and behavior. However, the impact of chronic pain on daily decisions is less well-known. This narrative review identified and synthesized findings from a literature search that yielded 18 peer-reviewed, experimental, cross-sectional studies on the effects of chronic pain on different decision-making outcomes. According to the literature, the effects of chronic pain on decision-making are evidenced by 1) reduced decision performance, 2)

Enhanced cardiac perception predicts impaired performance in the Iowa Gambling Task in patients with panic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Somatic marker theory predicts that somatic cues serve intuitive decision making; however, cardiovascular symptoms are threat cues for patients with panic disorder (PD). Therefore, enhanced cardiac perception may aid intuitive decision making only in healthy individuals, but impair intuitive decision making in PD patients. METHODS: PD patients and age-and sex-matched volunteers without a psychiatric diagnosis (n = 17, respectively) completed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) as a measure of intuitive decision making. Interindividual differences in cardiac perception were assessed with a

Understanding consciousness (biological and artificial) as a society of self-schemas.

This article argues that human cognition is more than the performance of functions such as memory, decision-making, and attention. The brain also builds schematic models of those cognitive functions and uses those models to monitor, predict, and partially control them. When you introspect, your understanding of who you are and what is happening inside of you is derived from those schematic, sometimes inaccurate, but generally useful models, rather than from the actual cognitive functions that are represented by those models. The proposal expands the previously proposed attention schema theory

Diagnostic decision-making and strategies to improve diagnosis.

A significant portion of diagnostic errors arises through cognitive errors resulting from inadequate knowledge, faulty data gathering, and/or faulty verification. Experts estimate that 75% of diagnostic failures can be attributed to clinician diagnostic thinking failure. The cognitive processes that underlie diagnostic thinking of clinicians are complex and intriguing, and it is imperative that clinicians acquire explicit appreciation and application of different cognitive approaches to make decisions better. A dual-process model that unifies many theories of decision-making has emerged as a p

Prioritized memory access explains planning and hippocampal replay.

To make decisions, animals must evaluate candidate choices by accessing memories of relevant experiences. Yet little is known about which experiences are considered or ignored during deliberation, which ultimately governs choice. We propose a normative theory predicting which memories should be accessed at each moment to optimize future decisions. Using nonlocal 'replay' of spatial locations in hippocampus as a window into memory access, we simulate a spatial navigation task in which an agent accesses memories of locations sequentially, ordered by utility: how much extra reward would be earned
