Bilateral dentigerous cysts and ectopic teeth in the maxillary sinuses: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Dentigerous cysts are the second most common form of benign odontogenic cysts. These cysts are commonly single lesions. Bilateral and multiple dentigerous cysts are very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: This article presents a rare case report of bilateral dentigerous cysts associated with two ectopic teeth located atypically in the maxillary sinuses in a 19-year-old male manifesting as bilateral upper jaw pain, post-nasal discharge and recurrent sinusitis which was managed via the endonasal endoscopic approach by enucleation of the cysts and teeth removal. CONCLUSION: This paper prese…

Large pediatric maxillary dentigerous cysts presenting with sinonasal and orbital symptoms: A case series.

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts associated with the crowns of unerupted, embedded, or impacted teeth. Most of them are associated with mandibular third molars, followed by maxillary third molars and canines. They are usually asymptomatic, and rarely do they grow extensively and compress the adjacent anatomic structures. We report 5 cases of extensive maxillary dentigerous cysts presenting with sinonasal and orbital symptoms. A literature review for similar presentations of dentigerous cysts has demonstrated 21 cases. Recognition of the extensive growth potential of the dentigero…

Bi-maxillary dentigerous cyst in a non-syndromic child - review of literature with a case presentation.

Dentigerous cysts are the most common developmental odontogenic cysts of the jaw, which usually occur in the second and third decade of life. It is most frequently associated with impacted mandibular third molar teeth and impacted canines. Bilateral/multiple dentigerous cysts are rare and typically associated with developmental syndromes. Non-syndromic dentigerous cyst occurring bilaterally or involving both arches at the same time is very rare. Here, we discuss the review of literature with a case of unusual occurrence of non-syndromic bi-maxillary dentigerous cysts in a child.

Diagnostic CBCT in Dentigerous Cyst with Ectopic Third Molar in the Maxillary Sinus-A Case Report.

Dentigerous cyst is the second most common odontogenic cyst after radicular cyst. This report describes a case of a dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted maxillary third molar. Patient presented with foul smelling discharge through nose and oral cavity. Cone beam computed tomography revealed maxillary third molar displaced to lateral wall of the nose and a unilocular radiolucency obliterating the entire maxillary sinus. A provisional diagnosis of infected dentigerous cyst was made. The cyst was enucleated along with removal of third molar. Histopathological examination confirmed the dia…

[Dentigerous cyst associated with a wisdom tooth in the maxillary sinus. Case reports, review of the literature].

Wisdom teeth are often impacted or in an ectopic position. One rather special localisation is the maxillary sinus. Usually these teeth are associated with dentigerous cysts, which can occupy the maxillary sinus partially or totally and can be the cause of various symptoms. We can find it at routine radiographic examination or the patient could have typical, sinus-related symptoms. This signs can be swelling, pain of the cheek, headeache and nasolacrimal obstruction. We report four cases (one of them detailed) with review of the literature where the upper wisdom tooth is situated in the maxilla…

A case of a large dentigerous cyst containing a canine tooth in the maxillary antrum leading to epiphora.

A case of a large dentigerous cyst containing a canine tooth in the maxillary antrum is presented. This case is of interest due because of its extensiveness and the presence of a canine tooth in the roof of the maxillary sinus. In addition, this caused a right-sided epiphora. Enucleation of the cyst containing the ectopic tooth was made.

Radiographic reduction following decompression of a dentigerous cyst and an odontogenic keratocyst: A comparative case report.

Odontogenic cysts are well-known maxillofacial pathologies with variable biological behaviour. Decompression has been widely used as a conservative, structure-preserving management strategy. This report presents a radiographic comparison of reduction patterns following decompression in two individual cases, one dentigerous cyst and one odontogenic keratocyst. Two patients presenting with cystic jaw lesions - one detected during radiographic investigation and the other presenting with progressive swelling - were managed using decompression as the initial treatment. Standardised radiographic mea…

Successful Preservation of a Developing Unerupted Tooth Associated With Dentigerous Cyst in a Child: A Case Report.

Dentigerous cysts (DCs) are odontogenic cysts typically associated with the crowns of unerupted or impacted teeth and are usually discovered when they reach large sizes or get infected. Although common in adults, their occurrence in children are rare. Most cases in children are incidentally discovered on routine radiographic examination of infected deciduous molars. Treatment methods vary based on the size and extend of the lesion, with enucleation and marsupialization being the commonly employed approaches. Despite the variation in techniques, the overall prognosis and treatment outcomes are …

Complete removal of dentigerous cysts with preservation of associated teeth as an alternative to marsupialization in children and preadolescents.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the results of dentigerous cysts enucleation with preservation of cyst-associated teeth as a single procedure in a group of children and preadolescents. A retrospective case series of seven patients with 15 unerupted developing teeth associated with or adjacent to dentigerous cysts was conducted. Patients were treated using the uniform surgical protocol (cystectomy, preservation of cyst-associated teeth, without use of orthodontic traction, primary wound closure). The metric analysis of the cysts and unerupted teeth on CBCT and an evaluation of the state of…

Kissing dentigerous cysts involving mandibular canines: report of unusual case with review of literature.

Dentigerous cysts are odontogenic developmental cysts, which mostly surround the crown of unerupted teeth, odontomas or supernumerary teeth. These cysts are mostly solitary in occurrence and their bilateral presentation is rare, especially in the absence of syndromes such as Maroteaux-Lamy, basal cell nevus or cleidocranial dysplasia. We present an unusual case of a 24-year-old female with nonsyndromic bilateral dentigerous cysts associated with unerupted mandibular canines that were diagnosed histopathologically as dentigerous cysts.

Conservative management of a large dentigerous cyst in a 6-year-old girl: a case report.

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts that are associated with the crowns of permanent teeth. They are usually characterized as unilocular radiolucent lesions and are rarely seen during childhood. The purpose of this article was to report the case of a 6-year-old girl with a dentigerous cyst associated with the tooth buds of premolars. The therapeutic approach included extraction of the primary molar involved and marsupialization of the lesion. After 21 months of follow-up, spontaneous eruptions of the impacted premolars were noticed. In conclusion, marsupialization might be the first…

Relationship between the prevalence of the dentigerous cyst and the odontogenic keratocyst tumor and the current etiologic hypothesis.

Cysts are considered as nonneoplastic benign lesions that, when present for a long period of time, can cause some discomfort, especially related to the treatment form. Among the types of cysts of the maxilla, the dentigerous cyst (DC) presents substances between the dental follicle and the crown of the tooth with high potential for resorption, and the odontogenic keratocyst tumor (OKT) characterizes for its noticed rapid growth pattern and the possibility to develop carcinomas in the lesion wall. The DC is the most common type among the developing odontogenic cystic lesions, while the OKT repr…

Inflammatory dentigerous cysts of children treated by tooth extraction and decompression--report of four cases.

Inflammatory dentigerous cysts are only found in the mixed dentition. The four cases presented here illustrate the uncomplicated behavior of these cysts when properly treated. By extracting the infected primary teeth, opening the cyst and ensuring continuous drainage, it is possible to achieve spontaneous eruption of the involved permanent teeth into the dental arch even if they are badly dislocated. Simultaneous with the eruption of the permanent teeth, ossification of the bony defect can take place. The reparatory process is completed in one to two years.

Occurrence of multiple dentigerous cysts in a patient with the Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis, type VI).

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of genetic lysosomal storage diseases. These diseases result from a defect in specific lysosomal enzymes required for the degradation of specific mucopolysaccharides. These incompletely degraded saccharides accumulate in tissues and are excreted in the urine. A general characteristic of these diseases is dysostosis multiplex. Dental complications can be severe and include unerupted dentition, dentigerous cystlike follicles, malocclusions, condylar defects, and gingival hyperplasia. This report examines multiple dentigerous cysts in a patient with a d…

Differentiation Between Dental Follicle and Dentigerous Cyst in Impacted Mandibular Third Molars: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Impacted mandibular third molars may be associated with pericoronal tissues that can undergo cystic transformation. Distinguishing dental follicles (DFs) from dentigerous cysts (DCs) based solely on radiographic findings is often unreliable, highlighting the importance of histopathological evaluation for accurate diagnosis and management. PURPOSE: The study purpose was to measure the association between radiographic and demographic variables and histologic diagnosis among patients with impacted third molars. STUDY DESIGN: In this single-center prospective cohort study, the invest…
