Clinical Predictors of Pain Relief with 60-Day Peripheral Nerve Stimulation: A Multicenter Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical predictors of pain relief with 60-day peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) remained undefined. Identifying the factors associated with treatment outcomes may improve patient selection and optimize results. OBJECTIVE: This study examined baseline physical activity, pain, disability, and psychological factors influencing early versus delayed response and non-response to a 60-day PNS. METHODS: A prospective, multicenter, observational cohort study was conducted on 73 patients who consecutively received a 60-day PNS. Baseline assessments included pain (numeric rating scale [NR

Music as a Gateway to Men's Mental Health: A Theoretical Framework for Masculinity-Congruent Intervention.

Men consistently underutilize formal mental health services due to masculinity norms that frame help-seeking as incompatible with masculine identity. This opinion piece proposes the gateway mechanism as a theoretical framework for understanding why music-based interventions may be particularly effective for reaching men who resist conventional services. The gateway mechanism is defined as the process by which a masculinity-congruent, non-clinical activity may create the psychological safety, relational trust, and reduced self-stigma through which men gradually move toward emotional disclosure

The Patient Dignity Inventory and Dignity-Related Distress among the Critically Ill.

CONTEXT: Critical illness confers a significant risk of psychological distress, both during and after intensive care unit (ICU) admission. The Patient Dignity Inventory is a 25-item instrument initially designed to measure psychosocial, existential and symptom-related distress in terminally ill patients. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to validate the inventory as a means of identifying distress in inpatient critical care settings. METHODS: Single-center prospective cohort study of adult patients admitted to one of five ICUs within the University of Pennsylvania Health System for greate

Short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy: review of recent process and outcome studies.

Short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) is a widely practised form of psychological intervention. Given that the Roth and Fonagy (1996) review concluded that there was a lack of confirming evidence for STPP, the current review is focused on studies published between 1996 and 2006 that evaluate the efficacy of STPP. As a result of a systematic literature review, 18 studies were found that met inclusion criteria consistent with those used by Roth and Fonagy (1996) for selection of studies, patient groupings and definition of therapeutic method. In general these studies add to an increasing

Lived experiences of dysphagia-related quality of life among esophageal cancer patients: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal cancer impairs basic functions such as eating and drinking frequently resulting in difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) and other problems such as weight loss, pain, fatigue, and taste alterations. There is still a research gap in understanding the impact of dysphagia on quality of life, as patients continue to bear significant physical and psychological burdens despite advances in treatment. This study attempted to address this gap by examining the lived experiences of dysphagia-related quality of life among esophageal cancer patients. METHODS: A phenomenological study

Health and nursing problems of elderly patients related to bio-psycho-social need deficiencies and functional assessment.

Elderly population is characterized by larger need for social welfare and medical treatment than other age groups. Along with aging, there is a number of emerging health, nursing, caring, psychological and social problems. Complexity of these problems results from overlapping and advancing involutional changes, multi-illness, decreased functional efficiency and other factors. The aim of the study was the assessment of health problems in geriatric patients as well as bio-psycho-social need deficiencies in a view of selected parameters of functional efficiency. The research group consisted of th

[Dependent patient and interpersonal dependency: psychotherapeutic strategies].

OBJECTIVES: This article is a review of psychotherapies for patients suffering from dependent personality and interpersonal dependency. METHOD: We synthesized articles making reference to this question, notably those written by Bornstein, author who refers to the dependent personality. We highlighted the psychotherapies that have been the object of an evaluation. The research on the subject is sparse: only eight studies permitting assessment of psychotherapies in this indication in 2005. Besides these psychotherapies, we detailed other approaches which are used by practitioners in these indic

Association Between Cumulative Psychosocial Risk and Cervical Human Papillomavirus Infection Among Female Adolescents in a Free Vaccination Program.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the association of cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) infection with cumulative psychosocial risk reflecting family disadvantage, psychological distress, and unhealthy lifestyle. METHODS: The sample (N = 745) comprised sexually active female adolescent patients (12-19 yr), primarily ethnic minorities, enrolled in a free HPV vaccination program. Subjects completed questionnaires and provided cervical swabs for HPV DNA testing. Unweighted and weighted principal component analyses for categorical data were used to derive multisystemic psychosocial risk indices

The epidemiology of psychiatric disorders in Quebec's older adult population.

OBJECTIVE: To document the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in Quebec's older adult population. METHOD: Data came from the Enquête sur la santé des aînés study conducted in 2005--2006 using a representative sample (n = 2798) of community-dwelling older adults. RESULTS: Our results indicate that 12.7% of the respondents met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) criteria for depression, mania, anxiety disorders, or benzodiazepine dependency. The 12-month prevalence rate of major depression was 1.1% and the prevalence of minor depression 5.7%. A t

[Dependence disorders in psychopathology].

Research concerning the psychopathological aspects of dependence implicates a wide range of behaviors reassembled under the term of "dependence behaviors": sexual, medical, alcoholic and tobacco dependencies. Speech samples of dependent subjects show that encountering the object of dependence (product, element, ...) introduces a particular form of organized psychological processes. According to several authors, psychopathological dependence can be attributed to: early personality development; failures in the separation-individuation processes; disorders in mother-infant interactions; and a def

Mobilizing ego strengths.

In certain special situations in psychoanalytic treatment there is a need to mobilize ego strength: (1) those patients who are "so infantile" that they need ego strengthening to mature sufficiently to cope with their lives; (2) patients who regress partially during psychoanalysis and cannot progress without analytic intervention to help strengthen their ego; (3) those patients with a strong tendency toward regression whose egos need immediate strengthening in analysis to prevent an immobilizing regression; (4) those patients for whom a stressful reality situation so undermines their confidence

Psychosocial outcome of COVID-19 patients requiring ventilation after ECMO versus long-term mechanical ventilation.

BACKGROUND: Severe COVID-19 frequently necessitates prolonged intensive care treatment, including long-term mechanical ventilation (MV) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). While survival outcomes of these modalities have been extensively studied, data on long-term psychological sequelae remain limited. This study compared psychosocial outcomes in COVID-19 ICU survivors treated with ECMO vs. prolonged MV alone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this exploratory single-centre study combined retrospective clinical data with prospective long-term psychosocial follow-up, 150 adult patients wit

Environmental enrichment as a potential intervention for heroin seeking.

BACKGROUND: Heroin-related cues can trigger craving and relapse in addicts or heroin seeking in rats. In the present study we investigated whether environmental enrichment (EE) implemented after heroin exposure can reduce cue-induced reinstatement of heroin seeking and expression of heroin conditioned place preference. METHODS: In Experiment 1, male Long Evans rats that already acquired a heroin self-administration habit, were housed in enriched or non-enriched environments, underwent extinction training and later were tested for cue-induced reinstatement of heroin seeking. In Experiment 2, r

Destructive women and the men who can't leave them: pathological dependence or pathological omnipotence?

Clinicians have focused more on the troubling issue of women who are dominated and abused by men than they have on those occasions where men are abused by women. While usually not involving physical abuse, the destructiveness of some women, expressed in terms of harsh and destructive verbal and interpersonal behavior can be so striking and persistent that it should remain of interest to psychoanalysts. This clinical paper examines two examples of male patients who, while accomplished in many spheres of their lives, are nevertheless engaged in marriages to women whose hateful behavior toward th

Intraventricular self-administration of morphine in naive laboratory rats.

Male Wistar rats implanted with cannulae aimed at the left lateral cerebral ventricle were individually maintained in Skinner boxes for 11 consecutive days. Animals were neither predependent on morphine nor shaped to press the operant lever. Experimental animals (n = 7) obtained intraventricular infusions of a 1% morphine HCl solution (2 mul per 5-s infusion) for each lever press while control animals (n = 7) received only the vehicle. Four animals were yoked to experimental animals and received equivalent but non-contingent morphine HCl infusions. The mean number of lever presses per day for

Asthenic personality, myth or reality.

One hundred and seventy five subjects admitted to hospital for neurotic conditions were assessed as to their personality types. Forty seven percent were judged as having personality traits consistent with the diagnosis of asthenic personality disorder. Thirteen of the 138 symptom, life history and psychological test items examined were found to be associated with the asthenic traits. Condensation of these thirteen items by factor analysis showed that two features--anxiety proneness and inability to cope with stress--together defined the disorder.

The mediating and moderating effects of resilience on the relationship between perceived stress and depression in heroin addicts.

The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating and moderating roles of resilience on the relationship between perceived stress and depression among heroin addicts. A total of 138 heroin addicts completed the measures of perceived stress, resilience, and depression. Correlation analysis indicated that perceived stress was positively associated with depression. Resilience was negatively correlated with perceived stress and depression. Mediation analysis revealed that resilience partially mediated the relationship between perceived stress and depression. However, resilience did not modera
