BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability and results in excessive utilization of healthcare resources worldwide. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region shows a high prevalence of depressive disorders. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and MDD have the highest rate of comorbidity of all mood and anxiety disorders, ranging from 40 to 98% in drug studies. Comorbid GAD results in more significant impairment in MDD and increases the severity of symptoms. Although several clinical trials supported the safety and effectiveness of vortioxetine, no data rega…

This study aims to explore the intrinsic patterns of spontaneous activity of bipolar depression (BD) patients by analyzing the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) that help differentiate BD from unipolar depressive disorder(UD). Twenty eight patients with BD, 47 patients with UD and 29 healthy controls were enrolled to receive the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scans. The group differences of fALFF values were calculated among three groups. In addition, the correlations between the clinical variables and mfALFF values were estimated. The bra…

Functional stability is a newly developed dynamic functional connectivity approach. The objective of this study was to adopt functional stability to investigate diagnosis-associated abnormalities (patients vs. controls) and status-related changes (acute vs. remitted status) in brain function in major depressive disorder (MDD). 132 MDD patients and 102 healthy controls underwent resting-state functional MRI as well as clinical and cognitive assessment at baseline, with 48 patients completing follow-up examinations at an average of 7 months. Results showed no group differences in baseline functi…

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are often comorbid, and it is estimated that between 15 % to 33% of people dependent on alcohol have an MDD diagnosis. Mood-related symptoms are also common in humans during acute withdrawal, but by most accounts, symptoms abate after 2-4 weeks of alcohol abstinence. Preclinical studies, important for understanding the etiology and finding treatments for this comorbidity, also find depression-like and anxiety-like phenotypes in early abstinence along with protracted negative affect detectable past 2 weeks postcessation. In this nar…

BACKGROUND: The comorbidity of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults is well recognized. The role of ADHD in the etiology of MDD, as well as the overlap of genetic and environmental factors between these two disorders, is an area of research. ADHD symptoms are considered risk factors for MDD.
OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to examine the relationship between MDD in young adults with history of ADHD.
DESIGN: Retrospective and observational study.
SETTINGS: Outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital.

Major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), and schizophrenia (SCZ) are classified as major mental disorders and together account for the second-highest global disease burden, and half of these patients experience symptom onset in adolescence. Several studies have reported both similar and unique features regarding the risk factors and clinical symptoms of these three disorders. However, it is still unclear whether these disorders have similar or unique metabolic characteristics in adolescents. We conducted a metabolomics analysis of plasma samples from adolescent healthy controls …

OBJECTIVE: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) are considered whole-brain disorders with some common clinical and neurobiological features. It is important to investigate neural mechanisms to distinguish between the two disorders. However, few studies have explored the functional dysconnectivity between the two disorders from the whole brain level.
METHODS: In this study, 117 patients with MDD, 65 patients with BD, and 116 healthy controls completed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (R-fMRI) scans. Both edge-based network construction and large-scale ne…

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are commonly reported co-occurring mental health consequences of psychological trauma exposure. The disorders have high genetic overlap. Trauma is a complex phenotype but research suggests that trauma sensitivity has a heritable basis. We investigated whether sensitivity to trauma in those with MDD reflects a similar genetic component in those with PTSD.
METHODS: Genetic correlations between PTSD and MDD in individuals reporting trauma and MDD in individuals not reporting trauma were estimated, as well as wit…

BACKGROUND: One common denominator to the clinical phenotypes of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) is emotion regulation impairment. Although these two conditions have been extensively studied separately, it remains unclear whether their emotion regulation impairments are underpinned by shared or distinct neurobiological alterations.
METHODS: We contrasted the neural correlates of negative emotion regulation across an adult sample of BPD patients (n = 19), MDD patients (n = 20), and healthy controls (HCs; n = 19). Emotion regulation was assessed using a…

Objectives: Schizophrenia (SZ), major depressive disorder (MDD), and bipolar disorder (BD) are serious mental disorders with distinct diagnostic criteria. They share common clinical and biological features. However, there are still only few studies on the common and specific brain imaging changes associated with the three mental disorders. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the common and specific functional activity and connectivity changes in SZ, MDD, and BD. Methods: A total of 271 individuals underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging: SZ (n = 64), MDD (n = 73), BD (n = …

AIMS: We reviewed studies that reported speed of antidepressant response to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in both bipolar depression (BPD) and major depressive disorder (MDD).
METHODS: We identified English language reports allowing this comparison.
RESULTS: Ten studies met our criteria. Four reported significantly faster response in BPD and in one there was trend for faster response. None reported evidence for slower response in BPD.
CONCLUSION: The findings support further study of speed of response to ECT in BPD.

BACKGROUND: The error-related negativity (ERN) is a negative deflection in the event-related potential following a mistake that is often increased in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The relationship of the ERN to comorbid major depressive disorder (MDD) has not been examined in adolescents with OCD. This study compared ERN amplitudes in OCD patients with MDD (OCD + MDD), OCD patients without MDD (OCD - MDD), MDD patients, and healthy controls (HC).
METHOD: The ERN, correct response negativity, and accuracy were measured during a flanker task to assess performance monitoring…
