The Prevalence of Pathogens among Ticks Collected from Livestock in Kazakhstan.

Ticks carry and transmit a wide variety of pathogens (bacteria, viruses and protozoa) that pose a threat to humans and animals worldwide. The purpose of this work was to study ticks collected in different regions of Kazakhstan for the carriage of various pathogens. The collected ticks were examined by PCR for the carriage of various pathogens. A total of 3341 tick samples parasitizing three animal species (cattle, sheep and horses) were collected at eight regions of Kazakhstan. A checklist of the ticks of Malaysia (Acari: Argasidae, Ixodidae), with lists of known associated hosts, geographical distribution, type localities, human infestations and pathogens.

Studies of ticks in Malaysia from past articles were reviewed, resulting in a list of 47 species belonging to seven genera (Argas, Ornithodoros, Amblyomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, Ixodes, and Rhipicephalus). The most prevalent genus in Malaysia is Haemaphysalis (20 species), followed by Amblyomma (eight species) and Dermacentor (seven species). Out of 47 species, only 28 have bitten humans, mostly belonging to Haemaphysalis. [Autochthonous babesiosis in dogs in the Netherlands?].

For the first time cases of babesiosis have been diagnosed in dogs that had not been abroad. Three cases were seen in the province of Gelderland (Bennekom, Elspeet), two in North-Holland (Koog aan de Zaan). A female Dermacentor reticulatus tick, the main vector of the disease in Europe, was found on one of the dogs at Koog; previously specimens of this tick species had only occasionally been seen on dogs returning from abroad. Serological evidence was obtained that in at least four of the cases European Babesia canis, transmitted by Dermacentor ticks, was involved.
