Contact dermatitis due to ciclopiroxolamine.

We report a case of contact dermatitis because of ciclopiroxolamine milk in a 43-year-old woman with tinea pedis and onychomycosis caused by Trichophyton rubrum. Ciclopiroxolamine is regarded as a weak sensitiser because of the few allergic reactions described in relation to its widespread use.

Allergic contact dermatitis to preservatives.

In summary, a wide variety of skin care products contain preservatives. Patients who are allergic to one of these preservatives may have either localized or widespread dermatitis. Affected patients may find it difficult to avoid thimerosal without the help of the health care provider because the use of these allergens is so widespread. Patch testing is an invaluable tool for patients who struggle with dermatitis. Antigen-avoidance lists that facilitate patient education about what products to avoid are available from the manufacturers of patch test allergens (for example, TRUE Test or Chemotec

Allergic contact dermatitis in Iran.

The frequency of sensitization to contact allergens varies in different countries because of both genetic and, more importantly, allergen exposure variations. The objective is to determine the frequency of sensitization to contact allergens in Iranian patients with dermatitis. 250 patients with a clinical diagnosis of contact dermatitis and/or atopic dermatitis were evaluated with a 28-allergen screening series recommended by the German Contact Dermatitis Research Group from September 2002 to April 2004 in Tehran, Iran. The patches were applied on the back of the patients, removed after 24 hr

Contact dermatitis to white petrolatum.

A 31-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a 20-year history of presumed atopic dermatitis. She complained of severe pruritus and the presence of extensive patches of erythema and scale. Her previous treatments included: multiple topical corticosteroids, tacrolimus 0.1% ointment, pimecrolimus 1% cream, and cyclosporine with no improvement of her symptoms. Her past medical history was unremarkable and she was on no other oral medications, including over-the-counter products. On physical examination, multiple erythematous, scaly patches were present on the chest, abdomen, back, and upper extrem

Allergic contact dermatitis from tacrolimus.

A 9-year-old boy developed allergic contact dermatitis from tacrolimus ointment. Tacrolimus was proven to be the allergen by right-versus-left double-blinded provocative use testing of tacrolimus ointment 0.1% versus inactive vehicle applied twice daily to normal preauricular and antecubital skin. Facial dermatitis appeared after 1 week and antecubital dermatitis after 7 weeks. Furthermore, patch testing of each individual ingredient was positive only with tacrolimus; a concentration of 2.5% in ethanol was required. Forty control patients had negative patch tests with tacrolimus 5% in ethanol.

Shoe contact dermatitis in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Patch testing with the shoe series may be useful for the diagnosis of shoe contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to verify the usefulness of the shoe series and the association of fungal infection with positive results in the shoe series. METHODS: A total of 140 patients with suspected shoe contact dermatitis underwent patch testing with the standard series and shoe series; 41 underwent mycologic examination. RESULTS: Positive results in the shoe series were noted in 58 patients (41.4%). The most common allergens were potassium dichromate (27.2%), nickel sulfat

Prevention of irritant contact dermatitis.

The prevention of skin diseases is accepted as an important part of occupational dermatology. Irritant dermatitis in particular, is a skin disease which can be avoided by preventional measures. Hence, an early introduction of trainees to preventional measures seems to be necessary to avoid bad habits which then become a matter of routine. The role of the dermatologist is not only the identification of individuals with a higher risk for developing irritant dermatitis, he should also inform his patients about the relevant irritants in their occupation (or of irritants in the household or leisure

Contact dermatitis to botanical extracts.

A review of the literature of reported cases of contact dermatitis to a variety of natural herbal extracts is Presented. Natural extracts are commonly used ingredients in many cosmetic preparations and homeopathic remedies. Although the term natural botanical extracts inherently purports to have beneficial and benign properties, these extracts can cause adverse reactions in individuals. As such, dermatologists should be cognizant of these agents as possible sources of allergenicity in patients presenting with contact dermatitis.

Contact hypersensitivity in hand dermatitis.

Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) in hand dermatitis (HD) was studied by patch testing (PT) 105 consecutive adult HD patients and 361 cases of suspected non-hand allergic contact dermatitis (NHD). The suspected offending agents were also investigated by a questionnaire. Age and sex distribution was no different between the 2 groups. The total positivity rate of PT in the HD group was much lower than in the control group (46.7% versus 63.2%, p < 0.01, chi2-test). The most common allergens in HD were rubber mix(17.1%), p-phenylenediamine (PPD) (14.3%), fragrance mix (9.5%), nickel (9.5%), colophoni

Contact dermatitis: clinics and pathology.

Contact dermatitis or eczema is a polymorphic inflammation of the skin. It occurs at the site of contact with irritating or antigenic substances. In the acute phase there is occurrence of itching erythema, papules, and vesicles, whereas in the chronic phase there is dryness, hyperkeratosis, and sometimes fissures. Contact dermatitis can be divided into irritant and allergic types. Allergic contact dermatitis is a type-IV T-cell-mediated reaction occurring in a sensitized individual after contact with the antigen/allergen. Such antigens are usually low molecular weight substances (MW approximat

Allergic contact dermatitis to cinchocaine.

A case of allergic contact dermatitis to cinchocaine is presented to highlight the confusion regarding the classification of, and cross-reactivity between, topical anaesthetic agents and the inadequacy of the use of benzocaine as a single screening agent for topical anaesthetic contact allergy. Our patient presented with a 10-day history of acute perianal dermatitis. Allergic contact dermatitis to Proctosedyl ointment, which was applied for 3 weeks prior, was suspected. On patch testing, he reacted to cinchocaine, a constituent of Proctosedyl ointment, and to the actual product, but had no rea

Allergic contact dermatitis in dentistry.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in dentistry may affect dentists and orthodontists, technicians, nurses and patients. Changes to dental practice in recent years have altered the reported frequencies of allergens causing ACD in both dental personnel and patients. Allergic contact dermatitis to medicaments, metals and glutaraldehyde were previously common allergens in dentistry; however, widespread adoption of rubber gloves by staff has resulted in a significant increase in ACD to glove allergens in both dental staff and their patients, while affording protection against the traditional allerg
