Phytophotodermatitis in grounds operatives.

Occupational dermatoses account for a significant proportion of work-related morbidity. Phytophotodermatitis is an unusual work-related dermatosis, but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of such conditions. An outbreak of 'strimmer rash' is described in three grounds operatives. The identification, aetiology and management of the condition are discussed.

Classification and evaluation of photodermatoses.

Photodermatoses can be classified into five general categories: 1) idiopathic photodermatoses, including polymorphic light eruption (PMLE), actinic prurigo, hyroa vacciniforme, chronic actinic dermatitis, and solar urticaria; 2) photodermatoses which are secondary to exogenous agents, including phototoxic and photoallergic reactions; 3) photodermatoses secondary to endogenous agents, mainly the porphyrias; 4) photoexacerbated dermatoses, including autoimmune disease, infectious conditions, and nutritional deficiencies; and 5) genodermatoses. The initial step in evaluating a photosensitive pati

Adverse food reactions by skin contact.

The skin is very much exposed to food contact, both in the occupational and nonoccupational settings. Through such an exposure, adverse reactions can occur that may be irritant or immunologic. Both such types of reactions are particularly common in children with atopic dermatitis. Immunologic reactions can be immediate (immunoglobulin E-mediated) or delayed (cell-mediated), and can be localized or systemic. The latter can be life-threatening, even following trivial exposure. Clinical and experimental data are accumulating to indicate that epicutaneous exposure to food can induce de novo system

Pterin-lysine photoadduct: a potential candidate for photoallergy.

Photoallergy is a photosensitivity disorder associated with a modified ability of the skin to react to the combined effect of drugs and sunlight. It has been attributed to the covalent conjugation of proteins with a photosensitizer, yielding modified macromolecules that can act as antigen provoking the immune system response. The potential role of some endogenous compounds as photoallergens has not been fully established. It has been previously proposed that pterins, which are endogenous photosensitizers present in human skin under pathological conditions, are able to covalently bind to protei

Insight into immunocytes infiltrations in polymorphous light eruption.

Polymorphous light eruption (PLE) which is one of the most common photodermatoses has been demonstrated to be immune-mediated disorder. Resistance to UV-induced immunosuppression resulting from differential immune cells infiltration and cytokines secretion has been highlighted in the pathogenesis of PLE. In this study, we reviewed differential patterns of immune cells infiltrations and cytokines secretion that may contribute to PLE occurrence and development.

This article reminds a review of photopatch tests with detailed analysis of: (1) materials used for double patch tests, and where possible, triple copies, one of which is protected from light while the other is exposed to UVA (5mJ/cm2) and the other exposed to UVB or a total spectrum of 0.75 DEM (minimum erythematous dose), with at least two readings; (2) interpretation of results to distinguish between contact allergy, contact photoallergy and/or phototoxicity; (3) materials used for UV exposure; (4) the list of (photo)allergens used in a standard series and/or a series specifically suited to

Photopatch testing: a consensus methodology for Europe.

A group of interested European Contact Dermatologists/Photobiologists met to produce a consensus statement on methodology, test materials and interpretation of photopatch testing. While it is recognized that a range of local variables operate throughout Europe, the underlying purpose of the work is to act as an essential preamble to a Pan European Photopatch Test Study focusing particularly on sunscreen chemicals.

Pemphigus vulgaris exacerbated by exposure to sunlight.

We report two cases of pemphigus vulgaris who showed exacerbation of their bullous skin lesions after exposure to sunlight. These cases indicate that ultraviolet light is an aggravating factor, not only for pemphigus foliaceus, but also for pemphigus vulgaris.

Phenofibrate-induced lichenoid photodermatitis.

Phenofibrate is an hypolipemiant drug derived from fibric acid. Cutaneous side effects such as pruritus, rash, urticarial lesions and some rare cases of photosensitivity have been described (1-3). The reported photosensitivity cases are clinically described as eczematous (1-3); some have been reproduced by photopatch-testing (2, 3). We studied a patient with a clinical and histopathological lichenoid eruption over light-exposed areas clearly related to phenofibrate therapy for an essential hypercholesterolemia.

Anticancer treatments and photosensitivity.

Drug-induced photosensitivity is associated with a wide range of anticancer treatments, including conventional chemotherapeutic agents, targeted anticancer therapies, and immune checkpoint inhibitors. These dermatologic adverse events can have a major impact on the well-being and quality of life of cancer patients, leading to dose modifications and interruption or discontinuation of anticancer treatments in severe cases. However, the heterogeneous nature of the photosensitive reactions induced by these agents, as well as the common concomitant use of other potentially photosensitizing drugs (a
