Early Permian terrestrial apex predator regurgitalite indicates opportunistic feeding behaviour.

Fossilised digestive remains (bromalites) provide unique insights into extinct animals' behavioural ecology, physiology and diet. We describe fossilised regurgitated stomach content from the early Permian Bromacker locality (Thuringia, Germany) using micro-CT, osteological, chemical and taphonomical analyses. The regurgitalite consists of a compact cluster of 41 bones with a unique taphonomic signature, including sub-articulated, aligned long bones, an irregular overall shape, and low phosphorus contents in the near-bone matrix. The multitaxic elements comprise a maxilla attributed to the capt

A case report of a pathology in the 'whip' of a flagellicaudatan sauropod.

Flagellicaudatan sauropods are well known for their elongated tails which end in a ‘whiplash’-like structure, consisting of biconvex rod-like caudal vertebrae lacking a neural arch. A remarkably well-preserved and relatively complete specimen of Barosaurus from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation preserves a number of these vertebrae, including the last two that terminate the axial series. The penultimate element preserves a distinct callus which we investigated, together with the terminal caudal vertebra, using X-ray computed tomography. A transverse fracture initiated the formation of the

The last weaponized arm: macroevolutionary trends of megaraptorid manual claw I and forelimb integration in medium- to large-bodied non-avian theropods.

From the Jurassic to the Cretaceous, most medium- to large-bodied non-avian theropods evolved towards predominantly head-driven predatory strategies. Megaraptorid dinosaurs represent a striking exception, retaining well-developed forelimbs and hypertrophied manual unguals hypothesized as a key adaptation within the clade. However, the macroevolutionary processes underlying the mode and tempo of megaraptorid claw evolution remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate the macroevolutionary trends of the megaraptorid manual claw by quantifying the shape and size of 22 manual phalanx I-2 (= manu…

Microstructure and development of the dermal ossicles of Antarctopelta oliveroi (Dinosauria, Ankylosauria): A complex morphogenetic system deciphered through three-dimensional X-ray microtomography.

Ankylosaurs were a group of heavily armored non-avian dinosaurs (Dinosauria, Ankylosauria), represented by a relatively abundant fossil record from the Cretaceous of North and South America. Their dermal skeleton was characterized by large osteoderms whose development and functional role have been largely investigated. However, interstitial small ossicles, forming between these osteoderms, have been far more overlooked and it remains unknown whether they were formed through the ossification of a preexisting fibrous matrix of connective tissue (i.e., metaplasia) or by a cell-induced differentia…

Deep reptilian evolutionary roots of a major avian respiratory adaptation.

Vertebral ribs of the anterior thorax in extant birds bear bony prongs called uncinate processes, which improve the mechanical advantage of mm. appendicocostales to move air through the immobile lung and pneumatic air sacs. Among non-avian archosaurs, broad, cartilaginous uncinate processes are present in extant crocodylians, and likely have a ventilatory function. Preserved ossified or calcified uncinate processes are known in several non-avian dinosaurs. However, whether other fossil archosaurs possessed cartilaginous uncinate processes has been unclear. Here, we establish osteological corre…

Evolutionary insights from an anatomical network analysis of the hyolaryngeal apparatus in extant archosaurs (birds and crocodilians).

Adaptive radiation of archosaurs, represented by crocodilians, non-avian dinosaurs, and birds, since the Mesozoic has been studied mainly based on their major skeletal elements (skull, vertebrae, and limbs). However, little is known about the evolution of their hyolaryngeal apparatus, which is involved with feeding, respiration, and vocalization, because of poor fossil preservation and the difficulty in determining the musculoskeletal homology of the apparatus. Network analysis is a framework to quantitatively characterize the topological organization of anatomical structures for comparing str…

A path to gigantism: Three-dimensional study of the sauropodomorph limb long bone shape variation in the context of the emergence of the sauropod bauplan.

Sauropodomorph dinosaurs include the largest terrestrial animals that ever lived on Earth. The early representatives of this clade were, however, relatively small and partially to totally bipedal, conversely to the gigantic and quadrupedal sauropods. Although the sauropod bauplan is well defined, notably by the acquisition of columnar limbs, the evolutionary sequence leading to its emergence remains debated. Here, we aim to tackle this evolutionary episode by investigating shape variation in the six limb long bones for the first time using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics. The morphol…

The forelimbs of Alvarezsauroidea (Dinosauria: Theropoda): Insight from evolutionary teratology.

Alvarezsauroidea (Tetanurae) are nonavian theropod dinosaurs whose forelimb evolution is characterised by the overdevelopment of digit I, at the expense of the other two digits, complemented by a drastic forelimb shortening in derived species (Parvicursorinae). These variations are recognised as evolutionary developmental anomalies. Evolutionary teratology hence leads to a double diagnosis with (1) macrodactyly of digit I and microdactyly of digits II and III, plus (2) anterior micromelia. The teratological macrodactyly/microdactyly coupling evolved first. Developmental mechanisms disturbing l…

Paleohistology and lifestyle inferences of a dyrosaurid (Archosauria: Crocodylomorpha) from Paraíba Basin (northeastern Brazil).

Among the few vertebrates that survived the mass extinction event documented at the Cretaceous-Paleocene boundary are dyrosaurid crocodylomorphs. Surprisingly, there is little information regarding the bone histology of dyrosaurids, despite their relatively common occurrence in the fossil record, and the potential to gain insight about their biology and lifestyle. We provide the first description of the long bone histology of the dyrosaurids. Specimens were collected from the Maria Farinha Formation, in the Paraíba Basin of northeast Brazil. Thin sections of a right femur and left tibia were m

The articulation of sauropod necks: methodology and mythology.

Sauropods are often imagined to have held their heads high atop necks that ascended in a sweeping curve that was formed either intrinsically because of the shape of their vertebrae, or behaviorally by lifting the head, or both. Their necks are also popularly depicted in life with poses suggesting avian flexibility. The grounds for such interpretations are examined in terms of vertebral osteology, inferences about missing soft tissues, intervertebral flexibility, and behavior. Osteologically, the pronounced opisthocoely and conformal central and zygapophyseal articular surfaces strongly constra

Shake a tail feather: the evolution of the theropod tail into a stiff aerodynamic surface.

Theropod dinosaurs show striking morphological and functional tail variation; e.g., a long, robust, basal theropod tail used for counterbalance, or a short, modern avian tail used as an aerodynamic surface. We used a quantitative morphological and functional analysis to reconstruct intervertebral joint stiffness in the tail along the theropod lineage to extant birds. This provides new details of the tail's morphological transformation, and for the first time quantitatively evaluates its biomechanical consequences. We observe that both dorsoventral and lateral joint stiffness decreased along th…

Evolution of the dinosauriform respiratory apparatus: new evidence from the postcranial axial skeleton.

Examination of the thoracic rib and vertebral anatomy of extant archosaurs indicates a relationship between the postcranial axial skeleton a … archosaurs towards the small entirely rigid avian-style lung that was likely present in saurischian dinosaurs, consistent with a constant volume cavum pulmonale, thin walled parabronchi, and distinct air sacs. There is no vertebral evidence for a crocodilian hepatic piston pump in any of the taxa reviewed. The evidence for both a rigid lung and unidirection …

New interpretation of the palate of Pterosaurs.

On the basis of a new, three-dimensionally preserved specimen of the Early Jurassic pterosaur Dorygnathus banthensis we present a reinterpretation of the pterosaur palate. The hard palate is formed by the extensive palatal plate of the maxilla and not by the palatine as has been generally reconstructed. This palatal plate of the maxilla emarginates the choana rostrally and rostrolaterally as in other archosaurs and lepidosaurs. The longitudinally elongate and dorsoventrally flat palatine in Dorygnathus is an isolated bone caudal to the palatal plate of the maxilla and morphologically and topog

Crocodylian forelimb musculature and its relevance to Archosauria.

The musculoskeletal anatomy of the crocodylian forelimb is documented to facilitate functional morphological studies of extant and extinct archosaurs. Comparative descriptions of muscles of the forelimb of several crocodylian species are presented, including attachment sites, innervation, and anatomical functions. The muscular anatomy of the crocodylian forelimb is highly conservative among the different species; however, interspecific differences do occur. Interspecific anatomical variation is interpreted functionally, and discussed in the context of the terrestrial locomotion of crocodylians

The giant crocodyliform Sarcosuchus from the Cretaceous of Africa.

New fossils of the giant African crocodyliform Sarcosuchus imperator clarify its skeletal anatomy, growth patterns, size, longevity, and phylogenetic position. The skull has an expansive narial bulla and elongate jaws studded with stout, smooth crowns that do not interlock. The jaw form suggests a generalized diet of large vertebrates, including fish and dinosaurs. S. imperator is estimated to have grown to a maximum body length of at least 11 to 12 meters and body weight of about 8 metric tons over a life-span of 50 to 60 years. Unlike its closest relatives, which lived as specialized piscivo…

Contrasting life history in the diminutive Dimetrodon species from North America and Germany.

The sphenacodontid Dimetrodon is best known from lower Permian marginal-marine deposits of North America (NA), where it occupied apex predator roles in aquatic-based food chains. Dimetrodon teutonis, the smallest documented species and only known representative of this genus outside NA, comes from the fully terrestrial and resource-limited ecosystem of the upper Asselian Bromacker locality, Germany. To evaluate its growth strategy and diminutive nature, we present the first osteohistological analysis of D. teutonis. We also reassess NA material from four localities spanning distinct deposition

Inner Ear Anatomy of Caenagnathidae (Theropoda: Oviraptorosauria) Emphasizes Mosaic Evolution of the Avian Neurosensory System.

The endocranial anatomy of oviraptorosaurian theropods, and their inferred sensory adaptations, has played a key role in understanding the origin of bird-like senses among avian ancestors. However, within oviraptorosaurs, sampling has thus far been limited, and a major gap exists in our understanding of the endocranial anatomy of an enigmatic subclade, Caenagnathidae. Here, we describe the inner ear morphology of three caenagnathid oviraptorosaurs, spanning a wide range of stratigraphy and body size. Our data show that the incipiently bird-like inner ears of caenagnathids were relatively simil

Hindlimb biomechanics of Lagosuchus talampayensis (Archosauria, Dinosauriformes), with comments on skeletal morphology.

Lagosuchus talampayensis is a small-bodied (~0.5 m long) Late Triassic dinosauriform archosaur from Argentina. Lagosuchus long has been a pivotal taxon for reconstructing the evolution of form and function on the dinosaur lineage. This importance is because it has a mix of ancestral archosaurian traits, such as a small pelvis with a mostly closed acetabulum lacking prominences that would restrict hip mobility much, with derived "dinosaurian" traits such as bipedalism, proximally shifted thigh muscle insertions, elongate hindlimbs, "advanced mesotarsal" ankle joints and digitigrade feet. Here,
